Re: <<Advancing Bird Flu-H5N1...Now following MERS and Ebola approaching PANDEMICS>>>
Influenza outbreaks in 1918, 1957 and 1968 caused some of the highest infectious disease mortality in the 20th century. In particular the 1918 pandemic caused more than 50 million deaths worldwide-the most deaths caused by any infectious disease ever in human history. Influenza pandemics in 1890 and earlier in the 19th century and back until at least the 16th century also caused non-trivial mortality. The excessively high mortality from flu in these years is thought to be due to major antigenic shifts in influenza strains, as opposed to smaller drifts in flu strains in years between pandemics. It is also thought that flu strains cycle naturally; however, as the 1918 pandemic was caused by an H1N1 strain, the 1957 pandemic by an H2N2 strain and the 1968 pandemic by an H3N2 flu, there have not been sufficient strains in an era when they could be evaluated molecularly to prove natural flu cycling in the human population. We have searched databases and institutions and here report finding extant preserved samples of sera of sufficient age and drawn at appropriate times to elucidate the strain of the 1890 pandemic and possibly shed light on influenza strains prior to that.

Its interesting to note , that at the time plague disappeared flu appeared , at times of great plague in between there was bout of influenza epidemics.
Is it possible that flu evolves over centuries into a a type of plague as we saw in the Ukraine not necessarily with bubo's, typical of plague , but with many of the other symptoms.
Its certain that our evolution has changed the dynamics of this disease as we have become much better at early detection, and quarantine, on the one hand but that our ease of travel has opened the doors to wider spread of the disease .

Re: <<Advancing Bird Flu-H5N1...Now following MERS and Ebola approaching PANDEMICS>>>
during SARS, a select few people inexplicably ended up infecting a dozen, two dozen or more people, turning a disease that might otherwise never have been spotted into a four-month worldwide panic.

SARS went global thanks to a superspreader — a Chinese doctor who infected more than a dozen people at a Hong Kong hotel in late February. One of those people brought the virus to Canada.

In Singapore, one SARS patient infected 62 people. In Toronto, which had several superspreaders, one early case infected 44 others.

In fact, an elderly couple who contracted the virus on the night SARS made its first appearance in a Toronto hospital were both superspreaders.

The woman, who had taken her husband to hospital for a heart problem, brought him back a few days later when he began to suffer from the symptoms that would come to be recognized as SARS. Later, people who traced the spread of the virus through Toronto hospitals would see that she infected three admission clerks, a security guard, five visitors, three nurses and one housekeeper — all within a 2 1/2 hour span.

"She wasn't that sick, actually. I don't even know if she had a fever," says Dr. Donald Low, the Toronto microbiologist who helped lead the city's SARS response.

"But clearly she was excreting a lot of virus ... which then ping-ponged into a massive number of cases throughout the city."

It's not clear why some people became superspreaders during SARS.

True, in some cases the amplified transmission seemed to relate more to the circumstances than actual patient. For instance, it became apparent that intubating a patient — putting him or her on a breathing machine — could be a superspreader event if health-care workers weren't wearing respirators fitted over their noses and mouths and goggles to shield the mucus membranes around their eyes.

Its vital that all migratory medical treatment should be stopped immediately
and emergency quarantine centres set up internationally, including triage centres, dealing independently with suspected cases, this should not be done at local GP s
Until such time that the full dynamics of this virus are fully understood, then all precautions should be taken.

Re: <<Advancing Bird Flu-H5N1...Now following MERS and Ebola approaching PANDEMICS>>>
The EMC virus does not use the same receptor that SARS does, the scientists found. At the time of the writing of the paper, published in the journal mBio, they hadn't managed to find the receptor the EMC virus uses.

But they did discover that it will grow in cells from five different species of bats, and in cells from pigs and humans. That is "absolutely unique among coronaviruses," they wrote.

The news assuages some concerns and raises others.

Drosten explains that when coronaviruses are found to have jumped into a new species, by the time science has detected the event the viruses have adapted to their new hosts.

SARS is a good example. It is believed the SARS virus came from a similar coronavirus that infects bats. But if you try to infect bat cells with the SARS virus, it won't work. Having switched species, the virus moved on, Drosten says.

"The usual concept for the coronaviruses is that as soon as you see this virus in human, it's actually irrelevant where it came from because the problem is there. We have it in humans," he says.

Given that paradigm — which holds true for other known coronaviruses — experts like Drosten were worried when sporadic cases of human infections with the new virus came to light this fall.

He feared the virus had left its animal reservoir and was spreading from person to person, with mild infections passing under the radar and only the severe cases coming to light.

But given that this virus seems to be able to infect multiple species — at least in the lab — that might suggest a pattern where the geographically and temporally distant cases are being infected from animal sources, not people, Drosten admits.

In some respects, that's a more reassuring idea. But in others, it's not. If the virus is able to infect a number of types of animals, it could continue to make periodic jumps to humans — which could impede containment efforts.

If the EMC virus were to get into animals farmed in the Middle East, for instance, human exposures could be ongoing, Fouchier says.

"From looking at these data . . . you would think the zoonotic potential of a virus like this would be higher than something like the SARS coronavirus, which is more restricted," he says. A zoonosis is an animal disease that crosses the species barrier to infect people.

The risk will depend in part on how well the virus transmits, which at this point is still a mystery. But Drosten says veterinary surveillance should be going on to look for the virus in livestock and wild animals in the Middle East.

Reading the above article is drawing me back to the Bedouin theory again animals moving through the desert , meeting other herds , sharing food , animals humans in close contact , occasionally going to the cities , but not necessarily living in there .
Bedouin often travel over boarder ares meeting tribal members in neighbouring countries , you can see how a silent migration could be happening and the spar odic cases ,in the cities.

incidents of sweating disease
The King of England is now on the eve of departure with the whole Court for the country, where he will remain all the summer, most especially because a disease is broken out here, causing death within six hours. They call it the sweating sickness. An immense number die of it.
All the disputes between England and France and Scotland have been already adjusted, so that nothing is talked of but eternal peace.
London, 1st August 1517.
[Original, Italian.]
Aug. 2. Sanuto Diaries, v. xxiv. p. 459. 943. Giovanni Badoer, Venetian Ambassador in France, to the Signory.
Dieppe, 22nd July.
The King was at Rouen. The Duke of Albany at Dieppe, where he (Badoer) had visited him. The Duke would not follow the King, but was returning to Scotland, five ships for his convoy being in the port of Dieppe, from fear of certain English vessels in those seas.
[Italian.]
Aug. 6. Original Letter Book, St. Mark's Library, Letter no. 141. 944. Sebastian Giustinian to the Signory.
General report that the Catholic King was in Zealand, and intended to embark [for Spain] with the first fair wind. Allusion to the invasion of Friesland by the Duke of Guelders, and to the cruelties committed there.
Had attended on the King, to speak with him about Cardinal Adrian. The King had removed with only a few attendants to a distant and unusual residence, in consequence of this new malady (the sweating sickness). This disease made very rapid progress, and proved fatal within 24 hours at the most; many were carried off in four or five hours. Patients experienced a profuse sweat, which dissolved the frame. If the attack lasted more than 24 hours, all danger was at an end. His (Giustinian's) secretary had caught the disease, but was recovered; and most of the members of his household were suffering from it. Yery few strangers had died, but an immense number of the natives.
Was admitted to the King's presence, as he pretended to have matters of great importance to communicate. Could not have obtained admittance otherwise, as great part of the court was ill of the plague. Presented the letters from the Signory and Cardinal Adrian. Had extracted Cardinal Adrian's letter from the packet addressed by him to Cardinal Wolsey, in accordance with the letters received by the nuncio (Chieregato); for otherwise Cardinal Wolsey would never have delivered it to the King. The King said he was perfectly acquainted with the affair through the briefs of the Pope, who had assured him that Adrian was conscious of the charges brought against him, and that he intended to deprive him of his cardinalate and benefices. Alluded to the absolution, and to the fine of 12,500 ducats levied upon him; and stated that he had quitted Rome merely because of the departure of the Cardinal of Volterra (Soderini), not choosing to endanger his life by placing himself in the hands of slanderers. The King rejoined, “I understand this matter better than you Venetians,” blaming Cardinal Adrian, and evincing towards him the worst possible will. Believed this was owing solely to Cardinal Wolsey, who had already got possession of the see of Bath, and taken the administration out of the hands of the Bishop of Winchester.
Had also attended on Cardinal Wolsey, to present to him the letters from the Signory and Cardinal Adrian, but found him ill of the sweating sickness. Many of his household had died of the sweat, including some of his chief attendants.
His (Giustinian's) son had gone to the Bishop of Winchester, and found that he also had taken the sweat. He obtained admission after waiting two days, and presented the letters from the Signory and Cardinal Adrian. The Bishop said the matter was desperate, as they had to deal with Wolsey, who was not Cardinal, but King, and that no one in the realm durst attempt anything prejudicial to his interests; that he (the Bishop) had resigned the administration of the see [of Bath] to him, and that the officials had been changed. The Bishop further stated that there were two Papal briefs concerning this affair. One of them very much aggravated the charges against Cardinal Adrian, and urged the gift of the church of Bath to Cardinal Wolsey. By the other, which was of a more recent date, the Pope seemed to be somewhat softened, and delayed the execution of the former one. This second brief, however, could not be found, but the Signory would comprehend by whose means it had been secreted. The secretary of the Bishop of Winchester vouched for its existence. The Bishop was of opinion that the only hope was in an appeal to the Pope, who was usually merciful. The Bishop of Winchester had written a letter to Chieregato in conformity with the foregoing statement.
The State should consider whether it would be advisable to risk offending Cardinal Wolsey, on whom all Venetian business in England depended.
London, 6th August 1517.
[Italian, 4¼ pages or 107 lines.]
Aug. 6. Mantuan Archives. 945. Francesco Chieregato to Bortolomeo, Chief Secretary of the Marquis of Mantua.
Account of the sweating sickness. To some it proved fatal in 12 hours, to others in six, to others in four hours. It was an easy death. Most patients were seized with the disease in a recumbent position, but some even standing, and some walking; some very few persons having taken the disease on horseback. The sweat lasted 24 hours, more or less. During the fit it was fatal to take any cold beverage, or to allow any air to penetrate the garments or bed clothes in which the patient commenced perspiring. It was necessary to have rather more covering than usual, though even in this great caution was needed, as some had been suffocated by a more than requisite amount of covering. The bedchamber should have a moderate fire, so as not to heat the room, but to keep it at a tepid temperature; the arms should be crossed on the patient's breast, and great care be taken lest the least air reach the arm-pits. To neglect these precautions insured immediate death.
The disease was not new to England; it appeared in 1486, and returned in 1504. At the present time it was reported that in Oxford (which, were it not for the university, might be called a small town) upwards of 400 students had died in less than a week. The disease was increasing, and already circulated throughout the kingdom, the dead being borne to their graves in every direction. Many of the Royal household had perished, and several of the household of the Cardinal. The King and Queen were gone with a few attendants to healthier places. The Cardinal was in the country, where, according to report, he, together with his chief attendants, were sweating.
Such was the universal dread of the disease, that very few were those who did not fear for their lives, whilst some were so terrified by it that they suffered more from fear than others did from the sweat itself. Italy had her sufferings, and England hers.

Aug 11. Senato Mar, v. xix. p. 25. 949. London Factory.
Appointment by the Senate of Jacopo Duodo and Cyprian Malipiero to be proveditors for the London factory.
[Italian, 3 lines.]
Aug. 12. Original Letter Book, St. Mark's Library. Letter no. 142. 950. Sebastian Giustinian to the Signory.
Ho had been unable to proceed further in the matter of Cardinal Adrian, both himself and his son having had the sweating sickness. Cardinal Wolsey had likewise suffered the disease three times in a few days; many of his attendants had died, and most especially his gentlemen.
Immediately on the Cardinal's recovery, and on obtaining audience, would do as desired, though he believed the business to be desperate, and calculated rather to provoke Wolsey to some act of indignation against the State, instead of benefiting Cardinal Adrian.

1 The absence of wills in this Roll may be accounted for by the visitation in 1485 of what is commonly known as the "sweating sickness." This disease, which is spoken of by a chronicler as "a great death and hasty," would appear to have allowed little time for citizens to execute wills, and we know as a fact that within a very short space of time it carried off two (if not three) Mayors and six Aldermen. A similar disease visited London in 1517 and again in 1528, and speedily decimated the citizens; but we do not find any increase in the number of wills enrolled in the Court of Husting, such as took place in 1349, the year of the Black Death.

The sweating sickness raged at this place in the year 1551. Out of 38 burials entered in that year, 27 were in the first 11 days of August, and 16 of them in three days. The disease of which these persons died is called, in the parish-register, "the hote sickness or stup-gallant." I have not been able to find this term in any account of the destructive malady, generally known by the name of the sweating sickness. The number of inhabitants in this town and parish was, in 1801, 1837; in 1811, 1564; and in 1821, 1979, according to the returns made to parliament at those periods.

There's a new virus called coronavirus(bat virus) that originated in middle east that's way deadlier than sars or pig flu. Maybe coronavirus, swine flu, and SARS combine to create a super virus. Then we are all screwed yay.

,,H7N9 bird flu is a sub-strain that had not been transmitted to humans before, the commission stated. The majority of human deaths from bird flu have been caused by the H5N1 strain. More than 360 have died from H5N1 globally from 2003 March 2013, according to the World Health Organization (WHO).
Currently, the infection route for the new avian flu remains unclear, the commission reported, adding that no vaccines are currently available.

The Chinese Center for Disease Control notified the WHO of the developments, specifying that the delay in announcing the result was caused by the amount of time it took to determine the source of the illness.,,, [link to rt.com]
