The latest victim, from the northeastern province of Kampong Cham, died on Monday night from the H5N1 virus in a Phnom Penh hospital, said Ly Sovann, deputy head of the health ministry's disease surveillance bureau. He said the man had eaten two ducks which had previously died before he became sick earlier this month. "We are really worried about the situation because in just two months we have nine cases of bird flu," Ly Sovann said. Eight of the nine people died, Link here... [link to hisz.rsoe.hu] |

That river did supply water for human consumption so it would be sensible to see if this could be a possible vector. One thing for sure is the very clear fact that we simply do not need yet another lethal strain of influenza to add to the existing group of usual suspects. It is somewhat suspicous that we seem to be "detecting" these new and deadly microbes at ever increasing intervals and one must be forgiven if wondering if this reallyis just a coincidental matter, or ifthere might be some other type of influence acting here. Time will tell! Two people in China have died after being infected with H7N9 avian influenza - a sub-type that had not previously been transmitted to humans - the government said Sunday. An 87-year-old man in Shanghai fell ill on February 19 and died on March 4, while a man aged 27 in the city got sick on February 27 and died on March 10, the National Health and Family Planning Commission said on its website. Treyfish User ID: 14756837 United States 04/01/2013 07:46 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | The World Health Organization says no evidence has emerged to show that a type of bird flu which has killed two Chinese men can be transmitted between people. Two men in Shanghai, aged 87 and 27, fell sick in late February. A woman in Anhui province also contracted the virus in early March and is in critical condition. "At this point, these three are isolated cases with no evidence of human-to-human transmission", the WHO representative in China, Dr. Michael O'Leary, told reporters on Monday. China's National Health and Family Planning Commission confirmed on Sunday that the three cases were the H7N9 virus, which had not previously been known to infect humans. "A new virus tends to be more virulent in the beginning. Either it is going to become a truly human virus, in which case we have to start dealing with it regularly, or it is going to be primarily an animal virus with just a rare human case," O'Leary said. Some Chinese had complained that authorities took too long before announcing the deaths on Sunday. O'Leary said the government acted properly as the deaths needed to be investigated... This serotype had never been found in humans previously and only one fatal bird flu case that was not H5N1 had been reported (H7N7 in The Netherlands in 2003. Two of the H7N9 cases were fatal (87M and 27M), while one was critical (35F). The WHO Chinese Influenza Research Center released a full set of sequences for all three cases. Each had PB2 E627K, as well as a 15 BP deletion In N9. PB2 E627K is a mammalian adaptation and was present in both H5N1 transmission experiments (CDC and EMC) which used an avian PB2. All three of the H5N1 transmission studies introduced the receptor bind domain change Q226L to increase affinity for mammalian receptors. Q226L has never been reported in natural H5N1 isolates. Two of the H7N9 cases, A/Shanghai/2/2013 and A/Anhui/1/2013 have Q226L, raising serious pandemic concerns. |
