Re: <<Advancing Bird Flu-H5N1...Now following MERS and Ebola approaching PANDEMICS>>>
Well with the Hajj pretty much on now, the eyes of those who have been dreading what this massive event might bring to the rest of the world, are obviously watching with their collective breaths held tight.

Not much has changed over the period since I last posted.

Saudi SARS continues to make itself felt in much the same way as it has.

Although it still doesent "appear" to be spreading with great vigor, it never the less maintains its presence in several notable locations within the Arabian Peninsula, and still its origins and vectoring are yet, after all this time, have not been traced down, which really is of concern and to a degree presents serious questions regarding transparency, and outright commitment to obtain those basic facts.

More should and could have been done by now.

Both of these basic parameters of this deadly bugs behavour should by now be well established, but appear not to have been.

Now with millions for visitors concentrated on the ground in this tiny region the risks of international spread and migration of Saudi SARS to the far corners of the planet rise exponentionally.

Let us hope that after "Middle Eastern authorities" having failed so miserably to bring us anything positive, that the rest of the world is capable of now picking up the massive amount of slack that has been so culpably left to us to deal with, that this task is not beyond our collective best efforts to still contain this menace to the general well being of the rest of the world.

Here below is the latest report of the steadily ongoing fatal impacts that Saudi SARS continues to achieve.

Of note is the absence of any information on less serious cases, there locations and other medically pertinent data.

The Saudis continue to cloak the real position and one must now seriously wonder at their motives for those actions.

Is it a case of sovereign embarrasement, or is it driven by simply pure financial/ religous pilgrimage motivations?

It is highly notable from their oil sales that they do love their money and the benefits that they enjoy from this highly productive enterprise, and one would have to suspect that the annual religous pilgrimage to their region may well be their second biggest earner of income into their local piggy banks.

That may sound somewhat synical, but because they have a very well established record of bullying the WHo and refusing to be completely transparent in accordance with their international obligations in relation to Saudi SARS, such criticism is and can justifyably be directed towards them.

Within the framework of the constant monitoring and epidemic surveillance of the novel coronavirus (MERS-CoV), the Ministry of Health (MOH) has announced 2 new fatal cases have been recorded in the Riyadh region.

The 1st case is a 78-year-old male citizen, who had been suffering from chronic diseases.

The 2nd case is a 55-year-old male citizen, who also had been suffering from diseases.

Meanwhile, after a slight repreive from the H7N9 menace that seriously threatened to plague China not so long ago.

There has been a fresh case identified back in that region.

According to Authorities there , there had been no fresh cases of H7N9 reported in September.

This re-emergence could signal the beginning of another round of infections of yet another threat to humans to which no definative knowledge of reservour or vectoring have been fully estalished.

Again, let us hope that this is an unfortunate individual instance, as the seasons approaching, could well spark more condusive conditions for this bug to again surface and with significatly greater impact.

One new human H7N9 avian influenza case has been confirmed in east China's Zhejiang Province, local authorities said Tuesday [15 Oct 2013]. It was the 2nd such case reported in Zhejiang since late April [2013], according to a statement from the provincial health department.

A 35-year-old man tested positive for the H7N9 virus at the Zhejiang Provincial Center for Disease Control and Prevention, according to the statement. The man, a company employee from Shaoxing County, was admitted to a township hospital on 8 Oct 2013. He is in critical condition and is receiving treatment at a Shaoxing county hospital.

On a slightly different note.

To all the regular faithful followers who do look, follow and contribute to this thread, I do not direct the following observations towards your very much appreciated and respected presence here.

Having maintained a regular watch here, and noting the number of hits that the thread gets on a daily basis, it is worth noting that the steady and persistant "drop-ins" combined by an almost total lack of "flu" related news in the MSM does appear to correlate.

Since regular posting here has been halted, so has the media frenzy and overtly dramatized reporting on the topic that has followed in concert with the steady flow of informative and reputable reporting on this thread.

The news and information has steadily continued unabated, with consistent information to report on.

In response to this insult and in recognition of all the massive hours that both all the other posters and I, have dedicated to eeking this information from a multitude of reliable sources only to be loosely plagerized by lazy and worthless leeches obtaing their sorry livings from this disgusting poaching of our works here, I say this.

Do your own research and try to be honest with your efforts.

If you must use this thread to give you the leads that your sorry and worthless backsides cant be bothered to put in the effort to locate for yourself then as a matter of simple decency and courtesy, both professional and moral, you need to consider at least acknowledging this thread as your primary lead source.

If any of you have any professional pride then at least attempt to display that or just attempt to earn an honest living and stop predating on our information.

arkay, and all of this threads genuine users.

After reading the following, does anyone else get the sense of us all sitting on a time bomb?

I do!

For an overall pictue of our present picture of the H5N1, H7N9 and H1N1 viruses that we do focus on here, this post does give a very good snapshot of the current situation.

Influenza at the human-animal interface, Summary and assessment as of 7 October 2013

Human infection with avian influenza A(H5N1) viruses

From 2003 through 7 October 2013, 641 laboratory-confirmed human cases with avian influenza A(H5N1) virus infection have been officially reported to WHO from 15 countries. Of these cases, 380 died.

Since the last WHO Influenza at the Human Animal Interface update on 26 August 2013, four new laboratory-confirmed human cases of influenza A(H5N1) virus infection were reported to WHO from Cambodia (3)and Indonesia (1).

All cases are considered to be sporadic, with no evidence of community-level transmission.

As influenza A(H5N1) virus is thought to be circulating widely in poultry in Cambodia and Indonesia, additional sporadic human cases or small clusters might be expected in the future.

Table 1: Laboratory-confirmed human cases of avian influenza A(H5N1) virus infection (26 August 2013 – 7 October 2013)

[Country – Province – Age – Sex - Date of onset - Date of Hospitalisation - Oseltamivir treatment Start date - Date of death - Exposure to]

Cambodia
Phnom Penh - 15 months – M - 16/08/2013 - 26 /08/2013 - 27/08/2013 – NA - Under investigation
Takeo - 5 year – F - 07/09/2013 - 12/09/2013 - 13/09/2013 – NA – Sick and dead poultry
Kampot - 2 year – F - 11/09/2013 - 15/09/2013 - 16/09/2013 - 17/09/2013 - Under investigation
Indonesia

____

Overall public health risk assessment for avian influenza A(H5N1) viruses:

Whenever influenza viruses are circulating in poultry, sporadic infections or small clusters of human cases are possible, especially in people exposed to infected household poultry or contaminated environments. However, this influenza A(H5N1) virus does not currently appear to transmit easily among people. As such, the risk of community-level spread of this virus remains low.

(...)

Human infection with other non-seasonal influenza viruses

Avian influenza A(H7N9) in China

Since the last update of 26 August 2013, China has reported no new cases of human infection with avian influenza A(H7N9) virus, but reported one death in a previously reported case. As of 7 October 2013, 135 human cases of influenza A(H7N9) virus infection were reported to WHO. Of these cases, 45 died. Most human cases presented with pneumonia.

Most human A(H7N9) cases have reported contact with poultry or live animal markets. Knowledge about the main virus reservoirs and the extent and distribution of the virus in animals remains limited and, because it causes only subclinical infections in poultry, it is possible that the virus continues to circulate in China and perhaps in neighboring countries. As such, reports of additional human cases and infections in animals would not be unexpected, especially as the Northern Hemisphere autumn approaches.

Although four small family clusters have been reported among previous cases, evidence does not support sustained human-to-human transmission of this virus.

Overall public health risk assessment for avian influenza A(H7N9) virus:

Sporadic human cases and small clusters would not be unexpected in previously affected and possibly neighboring areas/countries of China. The current likelihood of community level spread of this virus is considered low.

Continued vigilance is needed within China and neighboring areas to detect infections in animals and humans. WHO advises countries to continue surveillance and other preparedness actions, including ensuring appropriate laboratory capacity. All human infections with non-seasonal influenza viruses such as avian influenza A(H7N9) are reportable to WHO under the IHR (2005).

Break...

Influenza A(H3N2) variant virus infections in humans in the USA

To date in 2013, the United States of America (USA) reported 18 cases of human infection with influenza A(H3N2)v from Illinois (1), Indiana (14), Michigan (2)and Ohio (1). Only one person was hospitalized and no deaths have occurred. All cases reported close contact with swine in the week before illness onset and no ongoing human-to-human transmission has been identified.

Limited serological studies indicate that adults may have some pre-existing immunity to this virus but children do not. Seasonal vaccines do not provide cross-protection to influenza A(H3N2)v viruses in adults or children. Three candidate vaccine viruses specific for A(H3N2)v have been developed in the USA and could be used to produce an (H3N2)v vaccine if needed.

Overall public health risk assessment for influenza A(H3N2)v viruses:

Further human cases and small clusters may be expected as this virus is circulating in the swine population in the USA and the season of agricultural fairs is ongoing. The current likelihood of community level spread and public health impact of this virus is considered low.

Close monitoring of the situation, including continued characterization of viruses to detect any changes, is warranted.

Non-seasonal A(H1N1) virus infections in humans in the USA

The USA announced two new human infections with a non-seasonal influenza A(H1N1) virus. The cases had contact with swine in the week before illness onset. Both patients recovered fully.

These viruses are genetically similar to viruses circulating in swine in the region and to non-seasonal A(H1N1) viruses detected in humans in previous years.

It is expected that the human populations are largely protected by existing immunity except for young children, and by the seasonal influenza vaccine.

Overall public health risk assessment for non-seasonal influenza A(H1N1) viruses:

Further human cases and small clusters may be expected as this virus is circulating in the swine population in the USA. The current likelihood for community level spread and public health impact of this virus is considered low.

As can be seen, the specific viruses that we have been reporting on this thread do continue to be active, making their presence a threat to us all.

If, more likely, when the ideal conditions arrive, if we were to drop our guard against them and become complacement we will pay the ultimate price with an uncontrollable and deadly pandemic, which each of these viruses can sponsor.

We must, as a matter of high priority, continue to monior these outbreaks and diagnoses and constantly act to contain them, well before they can get any type of foot-hold and establish any potential threat that we know that they do present to humans.

There is no safe ground with these very potential manances, viglinance no matter the cost is the only solution.

Here is some news concerning Hajj visitors that should ring warning bells to us all, very loud and very long.

The simple fact that these unfortunate cases already exist is probably a fore-warning of what will no doubt be much much more to come.

This world is becoming a very scary and dangerous place to be in.

Thank you Saudi Arabia, and your very seriously miss-placed management.

Time you were held responsible for every case of Saudi SARS that emerges and made responsible for all medical expences as well as ancillery impacts for everyone that contracts this local disease that could have been contained.

Your ignorance and or greed has compounded your duplicity and responsibility for whatever the outcome will be.

You ARE responsible, and even thiough you have an abundance of sand to bury your collective heads in, you cannot escape your international responsibilities as your deadly dreams of untouchable position may have led you to believe.

The roosters are coming home to roost and you will have to stand and be held accountable, no matter how insulated you think you might be.

Three Indonesian haj pilgrims have died at Arafah field as a result of heart and respiratory issues, as of Monday morning, bringing the total number of pilgrims that have died in the holy land during this haj season to 72 people.

Indonesian Haj Health Service (BPHI) Jeddah head Masrip Sarumpaet, who is responsible for the health-related matters of Indonesian haj pilgrims visiting Arafah, said two pilgrims died of heart attacks while the remaining died of respiratory problems.

Re: <<Advancing Bird Flu-H5N1...Now following MERS and Ebola approaching PANDEMICS>>>
Keeping an eye on any news coming from Saudi Arabia relating to Saudi SARS, we have the following report and commentary from one of our most respected researchers.

This case follows a cluster confirmed last week which was linked to travel to Medina by the index case (59M). Although the traveler did not visit the Grand Mosque, he developed symptoms the day of his return from Medina, where multiple other cases were confirmed. Contacts of the Qatar subsequently developed symptoms in Qatar, signaling onward transmission.

Break...

The current case raises concerns of unreported cases in Qatar as well as additional cases in pilgrims traveling from the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in association with the Hajj, although the KSA-MoH has denied confirmation of any MERS cases in pilgrims.

Of course there are very few of us today that would take with a grain any assurances offered to us from KSA-Ministry of Health.

We are all very well versed in their complete lack of transparency with anything that might have to do with health, no matter the consequences, either to their own people but much worst to the health and well being of the rest of the world as well.

Pure contempt might go some way to describing their actions and perceptions of their international responsibilities.

Re: <<Advancing Bird Flu-H5N1...Now following MERS and Ebola approaching PANDEMICS>>>
There are three distinct primary subjects that we have been following on this thread for some time now.

H5N1 continues to be a concern, but fortunately it remains relatively stable for the present in its overall impact.

Having yet to make any significant mutations that would demonstrate a significant shift towards a pandemic threat to humanity, though that threat is ever present and in reality more likely a question of time and circumstance.

Saudi SARS is without doubt a massive threat that faces us today, and the totally derelict actions of those directly responsible with protecting us all will see this menace leashed onto us sometime in the future.

The final subject, H7N9 that emerged in China has been quiet until very recently.

Unfortunately this monster appears to be primed to return now in the near future to again present us with more challenges.

Here is more expert commentary and opinion that certainly seems to signal those fears of its return.

The above translation describes the first confirmed H7N9 case in the 2013/2014 flu season in the northern hemisphere. The vast majority of prior cases were confirmed in the winter/spring of 2013 and most cases were in northern China, including the first cases in the Minhang District in Shanghai in February.

Break...

Although, H7N9 cases in the fall have been expected, the confirmation of the first cases increases concerns that many additional cases will follow in the near term.

Re: <<Advancing Bird Flu-H5N1...Now following MERS and Ebola approaching PANDEMICS>>>
This information concerns genetic sequencing of the H7N9 strains being collected and analysed in China.

Although the body of the article is technical, the message it carries is one that this influenza virus has achieved adaptations that has made it more contagous for humans this approaching cooler season in the northern hemisphere.

This signals a serious change at the beginning of the northern hemisphere flu season that is about to kick off, and that could well mean far greater problems than has been evident to date with this flu virus.

State Key Laboratory of Diagnosis and Treatment of Infectious Diseases at Zhejiang University and the Zhejiang CDC have released full sequences (at GISAID) from the recent case (35M) in Shaoxing (A/Zhejiang/DTID-ZJU05/2013 and A/Zheijiang/22/2013, respectively). Both labs used an October 14 collection, and the prompt release of sequences is commended.

Break...

The latter is a mammalian adaption which produces an increased polymerase activity at lower temperatures (33 C), consistent with a higher viral load in a human nose in the winter. This temperature sensitive activity is also found in PB2 with E627K.

The CDC sequences suggests that isolates with higher levels of D87N will more efficiently transmit human to human.

Re: <<Advancing Bird Flu-H5N1...Now following MERS and Ebola approaching PANDEMICS>>>
Many of our readers and contributors here will be familiar with another respected poster who has taken the time to offer his information here from time to time.

We all know him as Treyfish...

Apart from his valued presence here, he also runs his own blog site.

From time to time he has been unable to post here as for some reason he seems to get caught up in the occasional blanket IP ban from GLP.

Until quite recently, having not heard from him here I didnt think too much of it, but after over six months it did strike me as somewhat unusual.

So, I also visited his web/ blog site which I admit to not doing all that often as my browser doesent like the blog format that his host provides and I always get locked up on it.

Anyway, now to add some more concern, when I did recently visit, I noticed that his site has not been updated since July this year.

I do find this to be quite irregular for Treyfish as he has been a very dedicated and prolific gatherer and poster on similar information that we concern ourselves here with.

Not to mention his uncanny sense of detecting when something was out of kilter with how things should be and his ability to tenatiously tease the facts out of a story when most would drop it.

I now have to add an even deeper concern for him as I also sent him a private email, we share our contact details, which so far remains unanswered.

Having just experienced a pretty good dose of "blog burnout" myself, I am hoping that this is all that is at play.

I would however request to hear from anyone who may have seen some of his work since July.

I know that he has been active on other sites in addition to here on GLP and his own site, but so far I havent noticed his presence anywhere for a long time, and Ive looked at his usual haunts.

I wont go into further concers now other than to suggest that the work we do and often the way we express ourselves might not always win us friends in high places.

Make of that what you might, but we have spoken about this topic previously and perhaps hence some of the reason for my concern for him.

So again, if anyone can supply some information it would be appreciated.

Thank you all.

Weirder and weirder.

I just do not know quite what to make of this next report coming out of Saudi Arabia concerning Saudi SARS.

Im beginning to honestly believe that the Saudis have totally lost the damn plot.

This is a report of Saudi SARS that has been submitted to the Global Animal Disease Reporting System.

Please dont ask me anything about why the Saudis would choose to make a Saudi SARS report to a body that is pretty well exclusively decicated to "animal disease reporting"...

Perhaps the Saudi authorities are finally being honest in showing how they really think of all the humans on this planet apart from their own elite little club, that would at least be consistant with their performance with Saudi SARS to date.

Its a mystery, perhaps they have real news about some animal detections, but this report certainly doesent show any sign or indication of this.

Strange, very strange indeed.

Re: <<Advancing Bird Flu-H5N1...Now following MERS and Ebola approaching PANDEMICS>>>
This year Cambodia has experienced a number of H5N1 Avian Influenza cases, many with devastating fatal outcomes.

While things there have recently seemed to have settled somewhat, there has been a new report of a young girl who has been diagnosed as having contracted this devastating killer.

From the article, it is hoped that her diagnosis and treatment may has occured early enough for medical intervention to be effictive.

Lets hope her outcome is positive.

This unfortunate person had apparently come into direct contact with a chicken that had recently died and was being prepared for consumption.

It is so sad that the peoples in these regions find it so necessary to take the risks that the do with their food sources because of their poor socio-economic circumstances, which is what obviously has led to this infection.

We more fortunate people are just so fortunate to be able take for granted our food security and would never expose ourselves to these risks.

It doeent harm us to reflect on our obvious fortunate circumstances.

When faced with the facts that this information opens up, and we should and could do more as decent people to try to bring about better solutions to some of our brothers and sisters in regions like this.

There are too many examples of this for todays humanity.

Cambodia reports 21st bird flu case in 2013
Oct 22,2013

PHNOM PENH, Oct. 22 (Xinhua) -- An eight-year-old girl from Cambodia's eastern Kampong Thom province has been confirmed for the H5N1 virus, bringing the number of the cases to 21 so far this year, a joint statement by the World Health Organization and the Cambodian Health Ministry said Tuesday.

The little girl was confirmed positive for human H5N1 avian influenza last week after she was admitted to the Jayavarman VII Hospital in Siem Reap province with fever, cough, vomiting and dyspnea, the statement said.

"The girl has been treated with Tamiflu and her condition is now stable," it said.

"Investigations revealed that the girl had come into direct contact with dead poultry when she helped prepare a meal from a chicken that had died earlier," it added.

Only 10 out of the 21 cases this year survived.
