How likely is an EMP attack on the U.S. ??
I was pointed to this article from my Facebook.
First thing I thought was "it's a bit old but it could have some merit." then I thought I wonder if anyone on GLP has more info on this topic. I've read One Second After and blogs on this and I could see something like this happening. More so now with all the Wild news on what is happening in Iran.

Yes this article is from 2008 but it still seams relevant for now.

Another article on the same site states
"An electromagnetic pulse (EMP) over the United States could end modern life in America overnight. Whether caused by an enemy attack (a nuclear device detonated above the atmosphere) or by a natural phenomenon (a geomagnetic storm), an EMP can cause entire regions of the country to lose electricity—permanently. Despite the EMP Commission’s recommendations in 2004 and 2008, hardly any progress has been made in protecting the country from an EMP attack and its catastrophic results. The U.S. must prepare to deal with an EMP—now."

Any country that did it would be committing suicide, and terrorists lack the means to launch a large nuclear warhead into the upper atmosphere above America.

It is possible but would only effect civilian installations.

All government/US .mil infrastructure and technologies have been hardened to resist any EMP attack via weapons and even solar activity for over 5 years now.

So yeah, we would be fucked for a bit on the civilian level but we would not be defenseless at all.

Re: How likely is an EMP attack on the U.S. ??
depends.

If U.S. leaders approve of a mass EMP attack then there will be a mass EMP attack.

No foreign power could do it unless the U.S. allows it.

Re: How likely is an EMP attack on the U.S. ??
An EMP attack on the USA would only occur if there was a full scale war with either Russia or China.

The EMP would normally be generated by nuclear detonations overhead major cities - unless of course, there are other ways of generating EMPs that are classified.

Frankly, I would be more concerned at the EMP-type event triggered by a major solar outburst, such as the Carrington Event of around 1860. If the Sun did now, what it did back then - you can kiss goodbye civilization as you know it, and you can say hello to over 400 nuclear power station meltdowns as they all run out of fuel to keep the reactors cool.

Read "One Second After" by William Forstchen.

Deals with America getting hit by an EMP.
Best book I have read in a looooong time.

Very scary.
It just keeps getting better.
I like how there are no real heroes, just people dealing with the situation the best they can.
Even the leading man isnt that prepared.
