She's almost certainly a psychopath, and I think was probably developing her first taste for murder. Had she not been caught after this first one it's quite possible she was well on her way to becoming one of the very few female serial killers out there (most are men, it's exceedingly rare in women, but not totally unheard of).

There's no accounting for this sort of thing, for why some people turn out broken like this one and just acquire a taste for killing. It's a deep seeded instinct in them, but it's a broken instinct, like the part that's deep inside probably most people that gives them the ability to kill, like in self defense or because they have to in combat, becomes a driving motivator and not an act of last resort. Perfectly normal people can kill for other reasons (some valid, some not), but most don't enjoy it or take pleasure in it. Once someone starts taking pleasure in such an act, or if they somehow have it as an inborn need, then something is just really off in their brain.
