Admittedly my heart has always belong to Dylan and I never tire of Pink Floyd's earlier work
"Beware lest you lose the substance by grasping at the shadow".  ~Aesop

"Once in a dream I saw a snake swallowing its own tail, it swallowed and swallowed until it got halfway round, and there it stopped and there it stayed, it was stuffed with its own self. Some fix, that.
We only have ourselves to go on, and it’s enough…" -Charles Bukowski

"Grasping at things can only yield one of two results:
Either the thing you are grasping at disappears, or you yourself disappear.
It is only a matter of which occurs first."

Re: Have you ever experienced a Grateful Dead show?
I voted "Kinda .... " When I lived in California I boarded my horse at a stables adjacent to the "Grateful Dead" party house outside of Novato, CA. I would sometimes hear them playing while I was out riding. Some of their wives also had horses at the same stables, and we would occasionally ride together. Don't believe the husbands rode, but they did stop by with their wives.

I knew nothing of the "Dead" at the time, so treated them as just people. Nice folks as I recall.

Twice, I was all playing with trails and drinking tequila shots and beers before going in, great shows. Nassau coliseum, long island.

Saw a lot of other really great concerts their too.

The Jones beach amphitheater has been great for concerts lately.

Re: Have you ever experienced a Grateful Dead show?
Yep, ...GF showed up after work one day with Dead tickets back early 90s as a birthday prez...She preloaded a cooler in the back seat with frosty things...

The show was in Tampa Stadium. The Black Crows opened. Hung in the parking lot for like an hour ...well...sampling.

I vaguely remember actually entering the actual 'show' sometime later as the Crows were winding down...was getting dusk...

It was a beautiful night...I remember everyone just groovin' and laughing and doin' what Dead Heads do...just diggin' on each other and enjoyin' the ride with fellow humans...

Everyone kept wonderin' what they'd start off with and if memory serves...they played some pretty far out sh*t that night...people were groovin' but were sayin'..."What IS this?"...I don't recall hearing ONE song off ANY album that I recognized...but it was really, really, trippy stuff....

...long about an hour into the fun, some dude taps my shoulder from behind and hands me this spliff the size of Hugo Chavez and well,...details and memories get a really sketchy after those two hits....

Visualize whirled peas, brah....

Re: Have you ever experienced a Grateful Dead show?
I stopped at the record store after work tonight and was admiring the thirty dollar copy of American Beauty they have there. The special audiophile pressing. It makes me sorry I sold my copy years ago. If I see a nice used one sometime for a decent price I will pick it up.

I was stuck in the seventies this evening, bought Linda Ronstadt "Heart like a Wheel" and Little Feat "Time Loves a Hero". Also got Big Country "The Crossing" so I guess I made it a couple of years into the eighties.

PM me and I can e-mail you 100's of shows. Mostly soundboards.
 Quoting: wisc_natureboy

you can download hundreds of GFD shows for free. This was the bands policy for years. everyone could bring his/her recorder to the shows. the dead literally asked for it.

BUT soundboars are always welcome!

My brother,,,

Why YES I have as a matter of fact.

To the tune of prolly 75 to 100 of these wonderful gatherings.

I miss em,,, a LOT too.

And NO,,, PHISH is just not even close to what a Dead show was.

My collection of live shows,, studio stuff, unreleased stuff, videos and movies is coming close to the 500 GIG mark in my "library".

Need something? Let me know.

peace

Each time a person stands for an ideal, or acts to improve the lot of others, or strikes out against injustice, he or she sends forth a tiny ripple of hope. And crossing each other from a million different centers of energy and daring, those ripples build a current that can sweep down the mightiest walls of oppression and resistance. Few are willing to embrace the disapproval of their fellows, the censure of their colleagues, the wrath of their society. Moral courage is a rarer commodity than bravery in battle or great intelligence. Yet it is the one essential vital quality for those who seek to change a world that yields most painfully to change. Lot's of folks don't like/appreciate 'get' the Grateful Dead.

But then again lot's of folks eat at McDonald's. LoL

"Lesh, who was originally a classically-trained trumpet player with an extensive background in music theory, did not tend to play traditional blues-based bass forms, but opted for more melodic, symphonic and complex lines, often sounding like a second lead guitar. Weir, too, was not a traditional rhythm guitarist, but tended to play jazz-influenced, unique inversions at the upper end of the Dead's sound. The two drummers, Mickey Hart and Kreutzmann, developed a unique, complex interplay, balancing Kreutzmann's steady beat with Hart's interest in percussion styles outside the rock tradition. Hart incorporated an 11-count measure to his drumming, bringing a new dimension to the band's sound that became an important part of its emerging style. Garcia's lead lines were fluid, supple and spare, owing a great deal of their character to his training in fingerpicking and banjo."

Re: Have you ever experienced a Grateful Dead show?
At Nassau Coliseum late 70's I lost my drivers license. Next day a head showed up at my folks house and returned it to my mom. Mom was impressed. I was at another GD show in the late 80's. Mom had passed 2 years before. During "eyes of the World" her spirit visited me. The rafters lit up and her smile rained sunshine down on me. I knew then everything was OK.

I'm trying to figure out who the history lesson is supposed to impress? Great you know the back ground but the concert still sucked!

I went because I heard them and enjoyed the music but hated the concert and their back ground really didn't matter at the time or anytime for that matter!

Re: Have you ever experienced a Grateful Dead show?
Yes. In D.C., summer of 89. They were the most awful band I ever saw live. They all just stood on stage and did their own thing. I can't recall them doing one song that was tight and together.

Maybe this is what Dead fans expected. The crowd got all excited when they did Dark Star. To me it was just a lot of jamming noise. I thought it sucked big time. Shocking really. But everyone else there was having a great time. I never got it.
 Quoting: kat

LOL ..This above is SO true but it was a fun time experience. ...saw them 2 nights in a row with my ex deadhead GF in Charlotte NC..the smell of the crowd was lets say quite a'natural..Half the crowd was spinning in circles for some reason out in the arena hallway while they played.

I got to go to the last show, Christmas in Oakland, before Jerry died.

Someone sprayed the cops with liquid LSD and they were riding their motorcycles all around the parking lot, lights flashing and falling off. Too funny!
