| rosie80 User ID: 2081152 02/13/2012 08:49 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | .. I am going to pull this one up on my computer in a sec .. I recently read a good plan, from an american indian blog .. You dig deep large cooler shape into the ground .. use pvc piping to line your spot .. fixing the pipes to all run into each other .. the top holes you pour water in ... and at night it will become extra cool if not frozen depending on the weather .. the storage can be as big or small as you want it .. I was just wondering how to keep the walls solid from falling in .. I guess if I used it only 4 months out of the year the dirt would be frozen ... What do you think about this .. opinions .. modifications ... gonna go open your video in a sec .. .. well-behaved women rarely make history .. 22426221213 |

But, what about dairy? I don't think I can dig out a cellar. How did people keep milk, eggs, butter back in the day? Thanks for your thread btw. I think 50 degrees is about all you can expect from the clay pots, but that will keep short term items chilled. |

I know this to be true from experiments with a desert water bag, in the desert they work great, in humid climates they rot with mold. And at that time shall Michael stand up, the great prince which standeth for the children of thy people: and there shall be a time of trouble, such as never was since there was a nation even to that same time: and at that time thy people shall be delivered, every one that shall be found written in the book. |

Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1197108 Looks like they need to be clay Not sure about the "inner" one, but the outer one would most likely need to be clay because it "breathes" and absorbs moisture which would keep it cool. | Anonymous Coward User ID: 967614 02/13/2012 02:32 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | the only thing that concerns me about the eggs is the temperature needed to keep salmonella from blossoming. someone wrote on another blog that salmonella was undetectable, but it seemed like they were trying to scare people off the idea. so, what would be the min temp to keep eggs safe from salmonella? prolly have to check the usda site, but no more time today... thanks op |

Eggs and butter were kept on the counter no refrig needed we still keep ours on the counter. The key with the eggs is don't wash them when they come from the fowl. Butter will keep for several weeks on the counter As for milk if you don't use the amount you have daily or the next day at worst don't have a cow barter for what you need for the day or two. OR Make yogurt that's what it was used for in the day milk preservation. |

Milk doesn't keep of course. Let it go sour and then dry it (freeze dry or heat to about 70°). Butter goes bad through contact with oxygen, so I suppose if you found an effective way of shielding it from the air it would keep a relatively long time. |

Back in the old days they used a chemical dissolved in water for this (a silicate). I think it's called waterglass. It looks like colorless jelly enclosing the eggs. |
