take a look at the recent EQ's

Me thinks the west coast is about to start rumbling

People out there on the west coast better WAKE UP! Look...Vancouver had something a week or two ago...then down in and around Baja...then Northern Cal...now Oregon.

If 30% or more of America's agriculture is in California and she "pops," expect there to be NO FOOD in the stores.

Re: Magnitude 5.9 - OFF THE COAST OF OREGON
Wow I thought aftershocks started happening within hours of the EQ

Can they really take almost a day to happen>

Or was this a foreshock...
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 10574572

I've checked my EQ app on my phone and don't see any reported aftershocks, but I do know that it only reports EQ's of mag 3.0 or higher.

But if in fact there has been no reported aftershocks from the 6.0 quake yet than there's a strong possibilty that it was a foreshock to a bigger event, what concerns me is that yesterdays quake was at a very shallow depth as well.

Keep in mind though that the Japan 9.0 mega quake last year happend after a 7.0 quake + many aftershocks 3 days prior (or were thought to be aftershocks anyway) so anything is possible at this point.

One thing I do know is that it's scientific/geological fact that the Cascadia subduction zone follows a 300 year cycle and it was determined that the last major event there happened in the year 1700. It's also been determined that this event was anywhere from 9.0 - 9.7 on todays richter scale so needless to say it's going to be very ugly when this event happens again especially if the entire faultline ruptures from northern california to canada.

We are talking serious doom that will likely dwarf what happened in Japan last year....
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1282542

The history channel, on its series megaquakes, showed a gelogist going through sediment around the subduction zone, and he said there is evidence of a 10+ in the area, before recorded history, and there is indeed a cycle of mega quakes in the area.

^ Thanks for the links.

Any idea on how/where to find out what the quakes were and how soon after that EQ? I have no idea how to search for that info. Would be very interested to know how long before the first aftershock.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 10878007

Okay nvm my above post, the first aftershock happened 20 mins after the 6.5 EQ and then 39 aftershocks followed in the 2 days following the quake.

All between 3 and 4 mags.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 10878007

You're welcome! Good job finding the stats on the aftershocks, perhaps they (Wiki) was referring to ~24 in the first 24 hours with the remaining 17 you found happening on the second day.

I'm trying to find info on another 5-6+ quake that happened off the coast in the last year or so (maybe 2).

Since the article I linked indicated this 6 was the biggest off the Oregon coast the one I'm thinking of must have been further north, off Washington State, Vancouver Island or that vicinity.

If someone beats me to finding it, please post when it was and the aftershock information.

Also, I have a feeling Mexico might be seeing some activity soon. I posted about it here:

I found the thread for the Volcano off of Oregon. Its not a Volcano at all, its a caldera, and we all know what happens when a caldera blows. I haven't gone through the thread, but there was some footage, and the links may still work, of the Juan de Fuca under water, as well as the vents from the Axial Caldera.

dive 1467 and 1468 are very interesting as well. One of these clips actually shows where the plates meets, and very large gaps between them. This is what is happening down there right now, even though this was shot in August of last year, a few months after the first eruption in a thousand years.

As a resident of and having family in both the San Francisco and Los Angeles areas, I watch local (California/West Coast) quake activity pretty closely.

For the record, it is unusual to have a quake over 3 in this area (Vallejo/Solano County) - we only get a 3+ in this region (Contra Costa/Solano/Sacramento Counties) very, very occasionally:

Do you agree, Vallejo?

I usually don't log in to post but decided to do so as I'm researching previous earthquakes off the Oregon Coast.

There was a one in the same region just a few months back.

USGS recorded it as a 5.3 but news sources are still reporting that it was 5.9:

The swarm there started on 2/4 with a 3.0 as far as I can find. Then shortly after a 2.5, and then a 4.3 and then a 4.8.

Also on 4th Vancouver Island eqs 4.8 & 5.6.

Then on 2/7 there was a 3.4 offshore Oregon in same area.

Then yesterday the 6.

Someone on another forum who seemed knowledgeable suggested that the Gorda plate slipped in rotational movement & then the JDF started to accelerate until it locked again.

He/she were apparently basing this on the sequence & exact location where the above listed eqs happened and the pattern it created.

I'm not an expert but what they said made sense so you may be correct - there was some kind of slip. The person on that forum apparently has been following the Cascadia & JDF for quite awhile and understands it well.

I'd give a link but don't think it's allowed. I'll just say it's that huge, confusing, gawdy forum that it's so hard to find anything on and they have rules up the ykw! Their only saving grace is that some people who are really up on seismic/volcanic info post there. I don't go there much but do for seismic/volcanic info when something like this is happening since they are really into it.

So anyway, many on here know which one I'm talking about. I wish some of those posters would come over here and post on eqs also.

So what your saying is, is that earthquakes don't occur around volcanoes. And that any earthquake around a volcano is not an earthquake, but an eruption. Sure discounts what I have been reading about both. You are correct in saying that it is a subduction zone. But, there is also evidence of an ancient caldera there. As a matter of fact, there are many subduction zones all over the world which are littered with active, and inactive volcanoes. Another ancient caldera would be Yellow Stone. Which not only produces harmonic tremors, but has been known to produce some rather strong earthquakes. But then again, I was only reading from science journal's, and not really listening to the experts here on GLP. Guess I was reading the wrong information.

There is a "Christian prophet" named John Paul Jackson and he mentioned something... that he saw a catastrophic EQ in 2012 between Seattle and Vancouver and also a volcano becoming active in that area. I never took it truly to heart until i have seen this EQ activity in the past couple of weeks. weird. I stumbled across his videos on youtube just being curious about what said prophets are saying these days. I wonder if I can find the video again. He also has an interesting series called the Perfect Storm.

He also said something about Japan happening again.

So, is that prediction for an earthquake between Seattle and Vancouver WA or Seattle and Vancouver B.C.? Not that it matters to me since we live close to Seattle, but we have family members and friends near the B.C. one.

Harmonic tremors are quakes, quakes that happen to occur where a volcano is, read up on that.

If it was volcanic activity as some here suggest then the 6.0 would have been the volcano blowing, the size gives it away.

If it was volcanic activity as some here suggest then we would see harmonic tremors before it blew.

I am discounting the quake as being volcanic in nature due to it's size and with no precursors, a quake that size would not be the rumblings of a volcano but the volcano erupting. Also due to the fact it is on the subduction zone that moves nearly 4cm a year and hasn't stopped moving in over 300 years and is on a 300 year cycle ...

Anyway, you should learn to read properly, I hope you don't read 'journals' the way you read posts in forums, I didn't once say eq's don't occur on volcanoes.
