Breaking! U.N. general assembly passes resolution endorsing plan for al-Assad to step down
"The United Nations General Assembly has passed a nonbinding resolution endorsing the Arab League plan for Syrian president Bashar al-Assad to step down.

The vote was 137 in favor and 12 against, with 17 abstentions.

The symbolic resolution that condemns President Bashar al-Assad's violent crackdown in Syria was introduced into the assembly after China and Russia blocked the Security Council from approving enforceable measures aimed at curbing the violence."

Does no one find the international community making it's first steps towards war with Syria important news? This is a big deal. It's largely symbolic but it allows the formation of a coalition for a military intervention without condemnation from the greater international community with the exclusion of the 17 no votes Iran, Russia, China, North Korea, etc.

Yes it's non-binding. As long as the Chinese and Russians threaten to veto any resolution on the security counsel then the UN will not be the body taking action in Syria. More than likely this will be used to show that there is broad international support behind regime change in Syria and will be used to justify a military intervention by an coalition like the Friends of Syria outside of the UN.

I just voted at my home for the U.N. to dismantle, break up and cease to conduct any further business. Of course my resolution is nonbinding.

Like I just said... the resolution is non binding. It can however be used to justify a coalition for a military intervention in Syria.

If you had a massive army to back up your resolution it would hold more weight too.

that's exactly what it's for..to give any such move legitimacy. Everyone knows because of China and Russia it would never get past the security council...this is going around it in a way.

Which is exactly why this is incredibly important news. I'm surprised there aren't any posts on this topic pinned yet. Especially with threats from Iran, Russia and China that they will respond to any military intervention with force.

Not trying to offend you but if you're this burnt out now... When the shooting does start and things go as badly as I think they may go I'd hate to see how burnt out you'll be then. This has every potential to be a trigger for WW3. Lets not forget though the shooting already has started. It's pretty much a full blown civil war in Syria at this point and there a lot of innocents caught in the middle with no where to run. We can't diminish or forget about their plight with everything else revolving around this situation.

If it comes down to a military intervention. The best bet is a coalition offensive led by Turkey. They're a local power in the region with a very strong military. With the rest of NATO supporting them they have the best chance at dissolving the Syrian Govt. However they would face the risk of attacks from Iran. Being a NATO country though, if that is the case the forces stationed in the Gulf will strike Iran to protect our NATO ally. I believe this is the main reason why we have built up forces in the region. Iran isn't dumb enough to start a war with the U.S. directly but We may be forcing their hand with a regional conflict. If the conflict ends there then I think we may be ok... but god help us if Russia and China get directly involved.

I don't think the Russian nuclear fleet based at Syria's coast is just going to voluntarily say "oh okay, we'll leave then" without ensuring some serious consequences for NATO.

Putin doesn't roll like that. The Russians have made it clear that there will not be Western military intervention in Syria under ANY circumstances.

The US/NATO is following the same script that Germany did in the region - and the Romans - to try to gain control. What's interesting to watch is the Russian, Iranian, and Chinese counter-play, which is what the Allies did to counter Germany's move into the region.
