The statement was made by Christian Wulff at 10:00 am in Lisbon, the Bellevue Palace in Berlin.

The resignation of the President of Germany comes after the request for suspension of his immunity by the prosecution of Hanover, since the German politician is suspected of corrupt practices.

Angela Merkel canceled the trip he had scheduled for this Friday in Rome, where he would be received by the chairman of the Italian Mario Monti. According to the press service of the German government, quoted by AFP, the trip was postponed to next week.

The Conservative leader Christian Wulff was elected in June 2010, the Christian Democratic Union (CDU), with the support and effort of Chancellor Angela Merkel.

Well, maybe since the last two presidents weren't shilling enough for her i guess.

Another glitch in the Germans plan to rule Europe financially, two wars didnt do it, so this is the next plan. France wagging its tail in obiediance behind them like the surrender monkeys they are, i surppose france never realy gave up germanic rule after WWII. When will the rest of Europe see what Germany is up to. The Dutch are probs going to be the next ones to bail out.

German President Christian Wulff has announced his resignation, after prosecutors called for his immunity to be lifted.

An ally of Chancellor Angela Merkel, Mr Wulff is embroiled in a scandal over a home loan that he accepted when he was premier of Lower Saxony.

Mrs Merkel cancelled a visit to Italy on Friday to deal with the crisis, and said she regretted that he had quit.

German media say the crisis is unprecedented in post-war Germany.

Mrs Merkel had fought to get Mr Wulff, an ally in her centre-right Christian Democrat party (CDU), appointed as president. He had been in the job for less than two years.

She said she accepted his resignation "with respect but also with regret".

"He dedicated himself to the interests of Germany," she said in a brief statement at 10:30 GMT, shortly after his announcement on Friday.
