And his impressive description of event:

"She did it again, and this time it was a gift for all of us who live near Etna - it was dinner time on a Saturday night, visibility was relatively good (except for clouds drifting across Etna's summit most of the time), it was incredibly powerful and one of the tallest lava fountains we've seen among the many dozens of similar events in the past 15 years. I'd give it a good 800 m height above the crater (of course, again the New Southeast Crater, which already had made four paroxysms during the past five days). At the end, it got really loud, and then, in a matter of a couple of minutes, the whole huge fountain disappeared altogether, and the latest episode of lava fountaining at Etna's New Southeast Crater was history.

Here's the view from near the little village of Pisano, not far from Zafferana and Santa Venerina, on the southeast flank of Etna, during the climax of the paroxysm at about 18:45 h GMT (=local time -1). Note how the fountain is absolutely vertical for much of its height, in spite of a strong wind blowing, which bent the top of the fountain northeastward and carried all the loose material, ash and scoriae, into that direction. For some time the immense jet of gas and molten rock was even inclined AGAINST the wind.

Anyone doubt that this is absolutely the most awesome, beautiful and marvellous volcano on this planet? "

ok I'm back home and going through my photos and video ... The fountain was brief like nearly all events of this kind, and ended rather abruptly, in like 2 minutes from intense fountaining to almost zero, which is something quite common (there are also descriptions of the same happening during Kilauea's 1959 Kilauea Iki eruption). Very loud noise at the end, almost the best part of it. It was quite tall, I'd say up to 800 m or so, which we haven't seen during the previous four paroxysms. It even shot up obliquely AGAINST the very strong wind. Tells you something about the energy that is released in such an event. Much less lava this time. Some photos and video will be up later this evening ...

...Within the Pu`u `O`o crater, the northeast spatter cone, now an open lava lake, sporadically overflowed lava onto the crater floor. The tiltmeter on the north flank of Pu`u `O`o cone recorded very weak deflation that was overwhelmed by rain-induced increases after 5:30 am this morning. Seismic tremor levels near Pu`u `O`o remained low. The most recent (preliminary) sulfur dioxide emission rate measurement was 300 tonnes/day on February 21, 2013, from all east rift zone sources; these values have typically been between 200 and 300 t/d from November through January and 300-400 t/d so far in February.
Outside the crater and across the northeast flank of Pu`u `O`o cone, multiple lava flow lobes, informally called the Kahauale`a flow, continued to be active on the northeast flank of Pu`u `O`o and on older flows north of Pu`u Kahauale`a to the base of the 2007 perched channel (visible in Pu`u `O`o East Thermal and North Webcams); at the base of the perched channel, the flow front split with the strongest activity going to the northeast and a small amount of lava going to the southwest.

An excellent story of how and why during the eruptions of lava fountains formed

[link to www.wired.com]
Boris Behncke 3 days ago
...these episodes are the result of the periodic foaming of magma in the conduit, even if not much new magma is furnished from depth. It's the gas that does the trick mostly. Gas is originally dissolved in the magma (like carbon dioxide in a bottle of sparkling water, as long as it's under pressure you don't see it because it is actually *part* of the water), and as the magma rises, the gas decompresses and separates from the molten rock, forming bubbles. These bubbles tend to rise faster than the surrounding magma and accumulate in the upper part of the magma column, which is capped by more viscous, cooler or even solid magma, so much of the gas don't escape. Instead, the bubbles become more and more and coalesce, requiring more and more space, and the result is that a sort of magma "foam" forms, which then rapidly expands, letting the gas and a minor fraction of magma escape. And that's what makes a lava fountain. The magma foam comes out as scoriae (or, in more silica-rich, highly explosive eruptions, as pumice), but its proportion relative to the gas escaping simultaneously is vanishingly small. So if you think of those impressive fountains of liquid lava and towering columns of dark ash, consider what immense quantities of gas (foremost, water vapor, and then also some good quantities of carbon dioxide and sulfur dioxide) are released in such events!

Thus, now happens already fifth eruption for 4 days.
Possible , we are moving to the level of Etna activity similar on 2000 year , wich accounts, as i remember, 66 eruptions.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 35019861

This is not quite correct info, and here is a comparison of the current activity of Etna with 2000 year made by expert

[link to www.wired.com]
Boris Behncke Holger_Alberta • 3 days ago
This is not the first time that Etna is in such a frenzy. In the year 2000, the "big brother" of the New Southeast Crater, then a healthy youngster (I'm speaking of the old Southeast Crater), awoke after a few months of quiescence on 26 January and made its first paroxysm in a series that would eventually count 66 (sixty-six) events by late-August. At first, the paroxysms came at intervals of a couple days: 26 January, 29 January, 1 February ... and then the thing accelerated in a bewildering manner. By the end of February 2000 the count stood at 38, some days had seen up to three paroxysms. So indeed, what is going on now is not all that exceptional.

One difference, though, there is. The lava fountains (paroxysms) of 2000 rarely lasted longer than 10-15 minutes each time. Those of 2011-2012 and again now each last some 45-60 minutes, so they are indeed bigger. This is quite evident from the fact that the cone of the New Southeast Crater has grown faster than its "big brother", and it seems it is vigorously growing again with the new paroxysms.

I think both explanations well, but as yet there are no additional data is difficult to give preference to any of them.
purely speculative - I would have preferred the first explanation, that is, an underwater eruption.
Why?

First, a very pretty spot, and much like the what we have seen for a long time near El Hierroohyeah

Secondly, I think that we are not seeing enough volcanic activity under the glacier in the surrounding areas (tremor, and so on),
so you can expect the melting of large volumes.

Third, all known volcanoes there are far enough away from the source of stain,
and in addition, well-defined estuaries to collect such large amounts of melted water I do not see.

Well, except that there is some new crack was formed? scheming

so while I would consider rather the first option (unless, of course, rule out any industrial discharges?)

No it's not as gigantic as July 98 and September 99 (that was the Voragine, and the Voragine is another league still), but it certainly plays in the upper range of what we've seen from the Southeast Crater over the years :-D

brucestout Boris Behncke • 6 hours ago
.....or perhaps to phrase the question more simply: is the gas content of the magma entering the system more or less constant or does it vary? And does this variation explain the different phases or, conversely, are the phases merely a variation due to the eruption dynamics (foaming/degassing -> effusive activity).

excellent question!

it's a scary area. A few years back I was monitoring weird seismic signals being picked up on UK seismic servers. even had a thread going about them, and what I noticed was activity in THIS area would kick start those signals. I became convinced something massive was going on here

since then though, so many areas have started playing up, it's hard to know where the REAL fun will start

did some manipulation of it..

that is an eruption underwater, or geothermal or something.

on second thought though, looking at GE, it seems there is an estuary there, so maybe a glacier flood off the big glacier is going on?

But.
Iceland. February (winter!). Third week all is melting

it's a scary area.

Very interesting, what there is to continue thereafter. Last time in the Philippines, we have seen something from Pinatubo?

New Zealand’s White Island volcano stirs, sends out ash clouds

Posted on February 24, 2013by The Extinction Protocol

February 24, 2013 – NEW ZEALAND — White Island is stirring again but volcanologists say activity within the crater is only minor. GNS has monitoring cameras in place at the volcano which take photos of the crater every 15 minutes and scientists noticed an increased level of activity between 11.30am and 1.30pm today. Duty volcanologist Arthur Jolly said the ash was confined to within the crater and would not affect aviation in the area. He was unsure as to what the rest of the weekend had to hold. “In certain volcanic systems you can see an evolution in the pattern and we know from many volcanoes worldwide that some volcanoes follow a pattern that leads to an eruption,” Jolly said. “But in this case, this volcano doesn’t follow this kind of set script.” By the end of last month the hot crater lake on White Island completely dried up as explosive rocks, mud and gas were thrown into the air from the active volcano. The volcano has been spewing a steady stream of gas since activity heated up in December. It’s the most active the volcano has been since 2000. –Stuff [link to theextinctionprotocol.wordpress.com]

Etna paroxysm of 2013-02-23

Posted on February 24, 2013by El Nathan

Etna has done it again. The 5th paroxysm of this sequence of paroxysms has produced the most spectacular fountaining of this sequence and one of the most spectacular views in a long time. Around 18:30 local time (17:30 GMT) it was noticed the volcanic tremor was rising, and not much later the first strombolian activity could be recorded from the new southeast crater, which has been the location of all the previous paroxysms of this sequence.

The activity quickly ramped up to provide a spectacular show around 19:30 – 20:30 local time. Fountaining has been reported up to 800 meters in height by mr. Behncke of the INGV in Catania. The episode ended rather abruptly and did not cause a big lava flow going down into the Valle del Bove, but it has probably been the most intense fountaining event since the Voragine events in the late ’90s. Due to the strong wind, most of the volcanic bombs/scoria have been blown towards the northeast.

Below are some video’s provided in the comments and from what I could find myself on youtube and elsewhere, just to provide some of Etna’s awesomeness for those who could not see it happen out there. Please share any additional spectacular photos and videos in the comments if you come across them, so I can also include them in the post. I’m guessing them Italians were always way ahead of their time, naming their mountain with the acronym of Every Time New Astonishment.

Turn sound off, someone is grinding something in the background. The video is the most spectacular I’ve found yet of this paroxysm.

Time-lapse from the Etna Walk webcam, posted by ‘pgen’ at the Wired Eruptions blog.

This morning the volcano looks quiet again, with only the black lava in the snow as proof of what happened, as can be seen in this photo made by, again, mr. Behncke of the INGV.

By seeing all this, one can only wait and hope for more of this the next days!

exhausted explanations and description

This is not quite correct info, and here is a comparison of the current activity of Etna with 2000 year made by expert
