March 18 11:00 h (March 18, 17:00 GMT)

During the last 24 hours, the monitoring system of Popocatepetl volcano detected 15 low-to-moderate intensity exhalations accompanied by steam, gas and variable ammounts of ash. During the periods 22:30 h (04:30 UTC) - 01:00 h (7:00 UTC) and 03:30 h (9:30 UTC)- 05:30 h (11:30 UTC) spasmodic tremor with moderate amplitude was observed. During these episodes incandescent fregments were thrown from the crater within average distances of 200 m, mainly on the east and north slopes (image 1), (image 2). During this morning a dense plume, mainly composed by steam and gas, has been produced, moving to the east (image 3)...

During the last 24 hours, the monitoring system of Popocatépetl volcano detected 95 low-to-moderate intensity exhalations accompanied by steam and gas and sometimes small ammounts of ash. Additionally there were 2 episodes of exhalations train accompanied by various segments of harmonic tremor. The first one ocurred yesterday from 13:00 h to 16:03 h (local time)(image 1), (image 2), and the second was recorded from 19:50 h to 20:30 h (local time). Some of the exhalations that arose during the second train, threw incandescent fragments 500m from the crater. (image 3), (image 4), (image 5). Other important exhalations occurred yesterday at 21:36, (image 6), (image 7), (image 8),and today at 08:19 (image 9), 09:05 (image 10), y 09:55 (image 11) (local time). These exhalations rose 1km above the crater and were accompanied by the emission of ash dispersed by winds east.

Volcano Type: Lava domes
Volcano Status: Historical
Last Known Eruption: 2006
Augustine volcano, rising above Kamishak Bay in the southern Cook Inlet about 290 km SW of Anchorage, is the most active volcano of the eastern Aleutian arc. It consists of a complex of overlapping summit lava domes surrounded by an apron of volcaniclastic debris that descends to the sea on all sides. Few lava flows are exposed; the flanks consist mainly of debris-avalanche and pyroclastic-flow deposits formed by repeated collapse and regrowth of the volcano's summit. The latest episode of edifice collapse occurred during Augustine's largest historical eruption in 1883; subsequent dome growth has restored the volcano to a height comparable to that prior to 1883. The oldest dated volcanic rocks on Augustine are more than 40,000 years old. At least 11 large debris avalanches have reached the sea during the past 1800-2000 years, and five major pumiceous tephras have been erupted during this interval. Historical eruptions have typically consisted of explosive activity with emplacement of pumiceous pyroclastic-flow deposits followed by lava dome extrusion with associated block-and-ash flows.

Melt-rich channel observed at the lithosphere–asthenosphere boundary

The lithosphere–asthenosphere boundary (LAB) separates rigid oceanic plates from the underlying warm ductile asthenosphere...
A conductivity anisotropy parallel to plate motion indicates that this melt has been sheared into flow-aligned tube-like structures9. We infer that the LAB beneath young plates consists of a thin, partially molten, channel of low viscosity that acts to decouple the overlying brittle lithosphere from the deeper convecting mantle. Because this boundary layer has the potential to behave as a lubricant to plate motion, its proximity to the trench may have implications for subduction dynamics...

...Hekla occupies a rift-transform junction, and has produced basaltic andesites, in contrast to the tholeiitic basalts typical of Icelandic rift zone volcanoes. Vatnafjöll, a 40-km-long, 9-km-wide group of basaltic fissures and crater rows immediately SE of Hekla forms a part of the Hekla-Vatnafjöll volcanic system. A 5.5-km-long fissure, Heklugjá, cuts across the 1491-m-high Hekla volcano and is often active along its full length during major eruptions...

Because this boundary layer has the potential to behave as a lubricant to plate motion, its proximity to the trench may have implications for subduction dynamics...

gif of Hekla, on the 11th of March and today

notice what looks like deformation on the right of the mountain, but the peak and the top of the 'dildo', (i dunno what the hell it is! chuckle) is exactly where it was on the 11th?
