8 :30 : Activity has not much changed since last night. It remained quite intense all through the night as can be seen on the tremor and the webcam images. During the night, a new lava flow appeared on the SW flank of the NSEC while powerful ejections of incandescent material persisted at the summit of the cone. Instead of a paroxysm, what is happening right now is a durable eruptive activity at the summit of Mount Etna.

will be curious to compare then with the opinion of Dr. Behncke

Two lava flows could be observed during the night: one towards the Valle del Bove and the other on the SW flank of the New SE Crater. However, they were not very long. Activity was essentially concentrated at the summit. Right now, it looks as if the tremor is starting to decline.

Paroxysm or no paroxysm?
Uploaded on Apr 12, 2013
...I observed the activity from 03:00 GMT (=local time -2) on 11 April, first at Monte Fontane on the east flank of Etna, then, when clouds covered the view from that side, from Monte Vetore on the southwest flank, where the view eventually was obstructed by weather clouds, too. Finally, I went to Piano del Vescovo, on the southeast flank, where visibility was rapidly improving as sunset approached, and at dusk, things became a fabulous display of lights and colors. Even without a lava fountain, this activity was extremely spectacular, in particular the soundtrack. I stayed at Piano del Vescovo, with countless other persons who came and went (I estimate that in total, between 300 and 500 people went to Piano del Vescovo, stayed for a shorter or longer period, and then went away), including a few friends and also new acquaintances. Everybody had a great time - but time did take its toll on me, and at 02:00 GMT on 12 April, I decided to go home in spite of the unabated activity.

As a matter of fact, the activity is still continuing vigorously, without lava fountains and with less tephra than the previous paroxysms, but attracting enormous attraction in the local population and in the media due to the good visibility, the continued loud detonations, and the extended duration of this eruptive episode...

few hours later

and finally, the new paroxysmThe lava fountain did not come, hour after hour, through the evening of 11 April and then through the night, and all the time there were those powerful explosions and loud, LOUD bangs, which made people in surrounding areas wonder what the hell was up with Etna. Also this morning, 12 April, the loud explosions continued, and in the clear morning light, a dense but almost ash-free gas plume was seen rising from the volcano and trailing southeast, for at least a hundred kilometers over the Ionian Sea.

When nobody thought anymore of a lava fountain during this particular eruptive episode, and all believed this would remain in Etna's history as a "paroxysm without lava fountains", a sort of failure, Lady Etna finally let loose. Shortly after noon on 12 April, the plume rising from the New Southeast Crater suddenly turned black, heavily charged with tephra (fragmented volcanic material: mostly ash and scoriaceous lapilli), and the base of this dark column was dull red. The lava fountain had finally started...

and

A mighty voice in the dark
Before you go any further, put on your headset and set the volume to a decent (not too loud) level :-D

On the evening of 11 April 2013 it looked very much like Etna's New Southeast Crater would produce its 10th paroxysmal eruptive episode of this year. But the expected lava fountain, which I had self-assuredly announced to all people who were with me at Piano del Vescovo, a spectacular observation point on Etna's southeast flank, did not come until the late forenoon of 12 April, on the anniversary of another spectacular lava fountain from the same crater (12 April 2012). Instead, the thing angrily growled and exploded, and this was a magnificent show as well - and Piano del Vescovo was rather crowded even for hours after midnight on 12 April 2013.

Dirty old mountain, all covered in smokeIt's been a moment since I last stopped at this site to take one of my comparison photos and document the rapid evolution of the New Southeast Crater, the youngest member in the family of Etna's summit craters. At sunset on 13 April 2013, I stopped on the narrow, winding road between the villages of Piedimonte Etneo and Presa, on the northeast flank of the volcano, to take this photo (which I admit is slightly contrast and color enhanced because the original version did not render the true colors). The New Southeast Crater cone is the feature farthest left, appearing, in this perspective, almost as tall as its "old brother", immediately to the right. The Northeast Crater, normally the source of most gas emission from Etna's summit craters, is seen at right.

Earthquake in USA on Sunday, 14 April, 2013 at 15:08 (03:08 PM) UTC.

Description
Between 8-12 April, five earthquakes were located within or along the margins of the Newberry caldera by the Pacific Northwest Seismic Network (PNSN, www.pnsn.org). The first two occurred at 04:19 & 04:20 PDT on 04/08 and were followed over the next 20 minutes by eight smaller (and therefore unlocatable) earthquakes. "Three days later at 5:01 PDT a "low-frequency event", so-called because it lacks higher-frequency waves that are commonly observed in regular earthquakes, occurred at a depth of cc. 8 km. Finally on 04/12 two additional earthquakes occurred at 02:28 and 04:06 PDT. The largest of these five events was a M 1.2. These five events appear as orange or red (two most recent) circles in the below map-view plot. "Although these five events are nothing to get excited about, they are noteworthy because only six other earthquakes have been located within or along the margins of the Newberry caldera since the Newberry seismic network was expanded from one to nine seismic stations in the summer of 2011 (none of these events would have been detected prior to 2011).

"In addition, the 04/11 event is the first low-frequency event ever recorded in the Newberry area. Low-frequency events are not unusual at volcanoes, and when observed are commonly thought to reflect movement of fluid (water, gas, or other) through cracks. Given that there are active hot springs within the caldera, the occasional occurrence of such events should not be surprising. "An unusual feature of this low-frequency event is its depth (8 km). Since the 1980s, such "deep low-frequency events" have been seen intermittently at Mount Baker, Glacier Peak, Mount Rainier, and Mount St. Helens. At these other volcanoes the deep low-frequency events occur as part of background seismicity and have not been associated with eruptions or unrest at the surface (for more information about these type of events in the Cascades, see Nichols et al. (2011)). Although intriguing from a volcanological perspective, these events are again nothing to get excited about.

today official report about yesterday activity

[link to www.cenapred.unam.mx]
Yesterday was observed a spasmodic tremor event was accompanied by the continuous emission of steam, gas and varying amounts of ash. This event lasted 9 hours, started at 08:58 and ended at 17:06 < (see image), and produced ash fall in San Nicolas de los Ranchos, Huejotzingo and in the northern portion of Puebla.
Later, between 18:10 and 20:20 there were several episodes of exhalations trains(see image) that were acompannied by amounts of ash dispersed northeast, mainly.
After these events visible activity of the volcano returned to its previous levels. Various exhalations were recorded with a slight explosive component. Some of these exhalations produced the emission of ash and incandescent fragments that were deposited mainly in the northeastern slope, reaching distances up to 700 m. The most important occurred at 20:23 (see image), 20:50 (see image), 23:00 (see image), 23:37 (see image), from yesterday and today at 05:20 h (see image), (see image), , (see image), (see image), (see image), (see image) .
Overnight continuous incandecence was observed on the crater increased when major exhalations (see image) .
At the time of this report there is a emission of water vapor and gas heading northeast (see image).

News of activity of the Nevado del Ruiz volcano, April 12, 2013, 11:30 (local time)
During this day continues to record the seismic signal of volcanic tremor, associated with the movement of fluids within the volcanic conduits and gas and ash emissions, which has been showing low energy levels.
In the morning it was observed by the webcams located in the area of the volcano, the plume of steam, gases and ash, with an approximate height of 1600 meters above the summit, heading to the northwest of the volcano presenting white, but with the presence of particulate matter (ash) See animation. There have been several reports from yesterday, officials from the National Natural Park Los Nevados and OVSM, fine ash fall in small amounts in areas surrounding the volcano.
Additionally, continued emissions of sulfur dioxide (SO2), evidenced in measurements of equipment installed in the field and through satellite images.

useful to recall (because some Luna sites wince with every little trembling tounge)

[link to earthice.hi.is]
Eruption of Grimsvotn volcano, begins 21 May 2011

The subglacial Grimsvotn volcano, Iceland, began erupting on 21 May 2011, around 18-19 GMT. The eruption was preceded by intensive earthquake activity lasting for about 1 hour. An ‘ash-loaded’ eruption plume rose rapidly up to about 17 km height (estimated 55000 feet from ground based radar, overview flights, and pilot reports). Ash from the lower part of the eruption plume was deflected southwards and from a higher level towards the east. Few hours after the onset of the eruption ash fall began over wide area in the nearest populated areas south of the Vatnajokull ice cap, at a distance of more than 50 km from the eruption site.

Grimsvotn is a basaltic volcano that has the highest eruption frequency of all volcanoes in Iceland. It is located near the centre of the Vatnajokull ice cap, the largest ice cap in Europe. The volcano has a caldera complex, the most recent one hosting the Grimsvotn subglacial caldera lake that is sustained by extensive geothermal activity. The volcano is almost fully ice covered and interaction of magma and meltwater from the ice causes phreatomagmatic explosive activity.

Initial overview flight, with limited visibility, and earthquakes locations suggest an eruption site in the southwestern part of the Grimsvotn caldera. Ice cover there is relatively thin (50-200 m) and meltwater is anticipated to accumulate within the Grimsvotn caldera lake. From there, it may eventually drain in a sudden glacial outburst flood, jokulhlaup, along a subglacial channel and issue from the Skeidararjokull outlet glacier.

The height of the initial plume in the present eruption, 17 km, is much higher than in a preceding eruption at Grimsvotn in 2004. Then an eruption produced a plume reaching an estimated height of 6-10 km above vent. The present plume is also higher than recorded in the Eyjafjallajokull eruption in Iceland last year.

A GPS-station on the rim of the Grímsvotn caldera has revealed continuous inflation and expansion of the volcano of few cm per year since the 2004 eruption, interpreted as inflow of magma to a shallow chamber. Another long-term precursor was increase in seismicity over last few months, including some bursts of tremor. Increase in geothermal activity was as well observed in the months leading to the eruption.

...No doubt the view is spectacular - and it is so not only from our kitchen but also from our bedroom, and from our daughter Ida's room. Maybe it is still more impressive with the village in the foreground, and its main road, appropriately named Via Etnea (visible in the center), leading right toward the mountain.

today official report about yesterday activity

April 15 11:00(April 15, 16:00 GMT)

Yesterday the monitoring system of Popocatepetl Volcano recorded an episode of tremor, low and medium range, combined with some moderate exhalations of great intensity. This event lasted a total of 3 hours and 10 minutes. It started at 15:50 h. and ended at 19:00 h. Associated with this activity the volcano was observed emitting a thick and continuous column of steam, gas and low ammounts of ash that reached up to 1km above the crater and headed northeast (see image) .

Additionally, at the end of this event, the visible activity of the volcano return to previous levels. 76 exhalations were recorded with a slight explosive component. The most important exhalations occurred yesterday at 21:37 h (see image) , 23:44 (see image) . , and today at 2:09 (see image) and 6:32 (see image) and produced the emission of ash and incandescent fragments that were deposited mainly in the northeast slope and reached distances to 400 m. Some of these exhalations were presented as hereinbefore defined as exhalations train.

During the night there was a persistent glow over the crater increased when major exhalations (see image) . At the time of this report there is a light emission of water vapor and gas heading northeast (see image) .

Volcano Type: Stratovolcano
Volcano Status: Historical
Last Known Eruption: 1985
Summit Elevation: 2277 m 7,470 feet
Latitude: 71.08°N 71°5'0"N
Longitude: 8.17°W 8°10'0"W
Remote Jan Mayen Island, located in the Norwegian Sea along the Mid-Atlantic Ridge about 650 km NE of Iceland, consists of two volcanic complexes separated by a narrow isthmus. The large Beerenberg basaltic stratovolcano (Nord-Jan) forms the NE end of the 40-km-long island, which is ringed by high cliffs. Beerenberg is a large 2277-m-high glacier-covered stratovolcano with a 1-km-wide summit crater and numerous cinder cones that were erupted along flank fissures. It is composed primarily of basaltic lava flows with minor amounts of tephra. Historical eruptions at Beerenberg date back to the 18th century...
