Etna produced a Plinian eruption in 122 B.C.E. (B.C.) with a magma composition identical to the magma it is emitting today - probably caused by some event that led to sudden decompression of the magma in the conduit, maybe collapse of the upper flank of the summit area.

A strong earthquake and about 20 smaller temblors have struck a small volcanic island south of Tokyo, slightly injuring three people but causing no danger of a tsunami. The strongest quake had a magnitude of 6.2 and hit just off Miyake island Wednesday evening at a depth of 20 kilometers, Japan's Meteorological Agency said. About 20 smaller temblors, half of them strong enough to be felt by humans, were recorded in the area throughout the day. Tokyo police said the strongest quake left three people with minor injuries. A man in his 40s suffered cuts from broken pieces of glass, and two elderly people at a nursing home sustained bruises from falling. The magnitude-6.2 quake also knocked down a concrete wall at a house and triggered several small landslides around the island, police said. "We've had moderate shakings repeatedly since this morning, and the one in the evening was surprisingly strong. Some things fell to the floor," said Miyake village official Naonobu Hayakawa. The Meteorological Agency said it detected no significant elevation in the island's volcanic activity and that there was no danger of a tsunami. The volcano, located 180 kilometers south of Tokyo, most recently erupted in 2000, forcing all 3,000 of the island's residents to evacuate for five years. A magnitude-5.8 quake struck Wednesday night off the coast of Miyagi in northern Japan, shaking large parts of the area devastated by the March 2011 earthquake and tsunami. There were no immediate reports of injuries or damage from the quake in the north. No abnormalities were reported at nuclear power plants in the region, including the crippled Fukushima Dai-ichi plant, public broadcaster NHK said.

Although there has been no extrusion of lava since 11 February 2010, scientists at the MVO keep a close eye on the state of dome, looking for changes such as increased rockfall activity, changes in the number and temperature of fumaroles or other general morphological changes caused by erosion. To do this, MVO conducts frequent observation flights, during which photographs and thermal images are acquired, and acquire satellite radar imagery.

Recent photographs and satellite radar images show changes on the dome that are the result of the activity on 4 and 5 February 2013. The activity included volcano-tectonic earthquakes, elevated gas flux and increases in activity at many of the fumaroles located inside the 11 February 2010 collapse scar on the north flank of the volcano. The increased fumarole activity resulted in the formation of a new crater around a prominent fumarole inside the collapse scar (see photo above), as well as the removal of material from around fumaroles near to the summit of the volcano. In the satellite radar image shown to the left, the cyan coloured area marked by arrows shows where the largest changes have occurred. ...
In addition to the recent changes inside the 11 February 2010 collapse scar, degradation of the east side of the dome, at the head of the Tar River valley, has continued since extrusion stopped in 2010. On 8 March 2013, scientists observed a large fissure in the cliff in the east side of the dome, part of which has existed since 2007 (see photo to right). The presence of the fissure, parallel to the cliff face and estimated to be 2 m wide, suggests that a large slab is slowing peeling away from the dome. Should this slab fail as a single block, it will likely produce a large pyroclastic flow that would descend the Tar River valley, safely away from any populated areas. The formation of the fissure is a result of slow cooling and subsequent erosion of the dome, a process that will continue for many decades, even after the current eruption is over.

Yeeees, we're having simultaneous activity at Etna and Stromboli, and yours truly is having the pleasure of being volcanologist on-duty for this week (thus it's a busy week). Etna's New Southeast Crater is gradually accelerating its activity, presumably toward a new paroxysm, wind is blowing south so that means whatever tephra will be emitted will go over my home village and then Catania, so it's gonna be a mess. At Stromboli, lava is still emitted from a vent on the rim of the crater terrace, but differently from earlier communications the lava has not reached the sea level. We're having INGV-Osservatorio Etneo staff on Stromboli monitoring the activity, and some of us including yours truly will shortly be in the field to monitor Etna's activity, soon.

chronometry-reportage by Claude Grandpey
"12:00 (local time): Since early this morning, there has been a rapid increase in the eruptive tremor. After some slight strombolian activity during the past hours (see my previous note on Mount Etna), the NewE Crater (NSEC) seems to be ready for something more vigorous…
13:00: The emissions are getting more intense. The thermal camera shows incandescent fallout around the crater.
13:30: Driven by the pressure of the gases, the eruptive column is heavily laden with ash but lava fountains cannot be seen (yet).
14:00: The tremor is still rising and seismicity is intense. However, the weather is getting more and more cloudy. Will Etna be too shy and prevent us from watching the show?
15:30: The tremor and seismicity have now dropped, which means the paroxysm is over. Due to the poor weather conditions, it was not really possible to describe the phenomenon. However, it looks as if it was less intense and that the NSEC ejected more ash than lava"

absolutely not sure that show really going to end , now appears clear tremor trend again "up"

News of activity of the Nevado del Ruiz volcano, April 12, 2013, 11:30 (local time)
During this day continues to record the seismic signal of volcanic tremor, associated with the movement of fluids within the volcanic conduits and gas and ash emissions, which has been showing low energy levels.
In the morning it was observed by the webcams located in the area of the volcano, the plume of steam, gases and ash, with an approximate height of 1600 meters above the summit, heading to the northwest of the volcano presenting white, but with the presence of particulate matter (ash) See animation. There have been several reports from yesterday, officials from the National Natural Park Los Nevados and OVSM, fine ash fall in small amounts in areas surrounding the volcano.
Additionally, continued emissions of sulfur dioxide (SO2), evidenced in measurements of equipment installed in the field and through satellite images.

News of activity of the Nevado del Ruiz volcano, April 14, 2013, 09:00 (local time)

With regard to the monitoring of the activity of the Nevado del Ruiz volcano, the Volcanological and Seismological Observatory of Manizales, reports that:
Continued volcanic tremor logging, seismic signal associated with the movement of fluids within the volcanic conduits and gas and ash emissions, showing low energy levels. From yesterday in the afternoon, this signal has been accompanied by the registration of volcano-tectonic earthquakes, located to the northwest of Arenas crater, at an average depth of 7 km, until the time of issuance of this notice, the largest magnitude earthquake recorded corresponds to at 22:43 (local time) on April 13 with 2.6 ML (local magnitude), felt by officials of Colombia National Parks in the area of Brisas.

During the early morning hours, web cameras installed in the volcano area, allowed to observe a plume of steam, gases and ash, with an approximate height of 630 m measured from the top of the volcano, this column shows white grayish, due to the presence of particulate matter (ash), and is directed towards the northwest along the prevailing wind regime in the area.

Emissions of sulfur dioxide (SO2) are still important as indicated by measurements of field installed equipment and satellite images.

REMAINS THE ACTIVITY LEVEL YELLOW (III): CHANGES IN THE BEHAVIOR OF VOLCANIC ACTIVITY.

With regard to the monitoring of the activity of the Nevado del Ruiz volcano, the Volcanological and Seismological Observatory of Manizales, reports that:

Below is a summary of the activity of the volcano Nevado del Ruiz filed during the last week including the information of the last hours. It is clarified that despite variations in seismic activity remains Amarillo activity level or III. Changes in the behavior of volcanic activity.

Continued seismic activity recorded mainly associated with rock fracturing within the volcanic edifice, located about 6 miles northwest of Arenas crater at depths between 5 and 9 km. The largest magnitude earthquake recorded so far since the beginning of this increased activity on April 13, April 16 occurred today at 07:14 with a magnitude of 3.2 ML (local magnitude). Six of the events of this increase has exceeded magnitude 2.5 ML and some of them have been reported felt by officers of the Los Nevados National Natural Park in the area of Brisas.
Since last April 10 was brought volcanic tremor related to fluid dynamics in volcanic conduits as well as processes of emission and ash.
They continue to experience significant flows of water vapor and sulfur dioxide (SO2) into the atmosphere, evidenced both in the equipment installed in the volcano, as satellite images available. In the morning there was the column of gases and steam, which reached a height of 1000 m above the volcano's summit and presented scattering direction to the southwest of the volcano, following the wind regime in the area.
Continue registering variations in volcanic deformation.
It is reiterated that the move to a higher level of activity is performed when the comprehensive diagnosis of all the volcanic monitoring parameters may suggest...

Activity News Nevado del Ruiz volcano, April 18, 2013, 10:30 (Local Time).

Continued seismic activity recorded primarily related to the fracturing of rock inside the volcano (volcano-tectonic earthquakes or VT), located about 6 miles northwest of Arenas crater at depths from 5 to 9 km. Recall that this increase in type VT seismicity at the volcano began on April 13, and at the time of issuance of this news, the largest magnitude earthquake recorded corresponds to occurred yesterday at 20:45 (local time ) with a magnitude of 4.0 ML, this seismic event was reported as felt by the inhabitants in the area of the volcano, as well as PNNN staff and, of those completing OVSM maintenance and installation of new stations on the volcano , also reached to feel in the municipalities of Murillo (Tolima) and Villamaría (Caldas), as well as in the city of Manizales.

The seismic signal recording volcanic tremor associated with the movement of fluids within the volcanic conduits and gas and ash emissions, still showing low energy levels, and no changes have been reported.

In the morning it was observed by webcams located in the area of the volcano, the plume of steam, gases and ash, with an approximate height of 1000 meters above the summit, heading towards the northwest of the volcano presenting greyish white, possibly indicating the presence of particulate matter (ash). In the current state of the volcano are common emissions of sulfur dioxide (SO2), this compound has a residence time in the atmosphere and mixed with rain water, making it slightly more acidic and sometimes resulting odors sulfur.

Additionally, continue to register variations in volcanic deformation.

Introduction.
More than 500 million people live within the potential exposure range of a volcano. The risk of catastrophic losses in future eruptions is significant given population growth, proximities of major cities to volcanoes, and the possibility of larger eruptions. The objectives of this review are to describe the impact of volcanoes on the human population, in terms of mortality, injury, and displacement and, to the extent possible, identify risk factors associated with these outcomes. This is one of five reviews on the human impact of natural disasters.

Methods.
Data on the impact of volcanoes were compiled using two methods, a historical review of volcano events from 1900 to 2009 from multiple databases and a systematic literature review of publications ending in October 2012. Analysis included descriptive statistics and bivariate tests for associations between volcano mortality and characteristics using STATA 11.

Findings.
There were a total of 91,789 deaths (range: 81,703-102,372), 14,068 injuries (range 11,541-17,922), and 4.72 million people affected by volcanic events between 1900 and 2008. Inconsistent reporting suggests this is an underestimate, particularly in terms of numbers injured and affected. The primary causes of mortality in recent volcanic eruptions were ash asphyxiation, thermal injuries from pyroclastic flow, and trauma. Mortality was concentrated with the ten deadliest eruptions accounting for more than 80% of deaths; 84% of fatalities occurred in four locations (the Island of Martinique (France), Colombia, Indonesia, and Guatemala).

Conclusions.
Changes in land use practices and population growth provide a background for increasing risk; in conjunction with increasing urbanization in at risk areas, this poses a challenge for future volcano preparedness and mitigation efforts.

A Sicilian friend has just told me that from now on, it is advisable, before starting a visit to Mount Etna, to consult the Civil Defence website in order to know the level of danger. Note that the site is in Italian and it is necessary to know this language to understand what is written!

This morning, the webcams reveal that minor strombolian activity occurred at the NSE Crater during the night. The next hours will tell us whether these are the signs of a new paroxysm.

Luckily, the fall of ash and lapilli bypassed my home village Tremestieri and also Catania - for this time.

Yellowstone's Volcano Bigger Than Thought
Becky Oskin 17 April 2013

SALT LAKE CITY — Yellowstone's underground volcanic plumbing is bigger and better connected than scientists thought, researchers reported here today (April 17) at the Seismological Society of America's annual meeting.

"We are getting a much better understanding of the volcanic system of Yellowstone," said Jamie Farrell, a seismology graduate student at the University of Utah. "The magma reservoir is at least 50 percent larger than previously imaged."

Knowing the volume of molten magma beneath Yellowstone is important for estimating the size of future eruptions, Farrell told OurAmazingPlanet...

Scientists have updated this image of Yellowstone volcano's underground magma chamber. Instead of two big yellow blobs, they have a clearer picture that looks like a knobby banana.

Lava columns reached 800 m today ( [link to www.meteoweb.eu] ). Volcanic material (lapilli, I suppose, hope not bombs) rained down on western side of the volcano.

Some points from an interview with D. Patanè (INGV):
- very important eruption, about 20-30% more energetic than the last ones
- eruption column up to 10.000 m height
- very fast intensification of eruption
- lava flows til down to bottom of Valle del Bove (I think that is what is still ongoing and seen on the webcams eg. [link to www.lave-volcans.eu] )
- second paroxysm within 48 hours.

But the glow is so intense today from the NSEC (New Southeast Cone) that it seems like there is still some explosions / or smaller lava fountaining ongoing. (see [link to www.lave-volcans.com] ).
