Mexico readies shelters after volcano tremors increase, steam plume spews into sky
...The government deployed soldiers and federal police to the area Sunday in the event of a bigger eruption, and officials closed off a seven-square-mile (18-square-kilometer) zone around the cone of the 17,886-foot (5,450-meter) volcano. State authorities prepared shelters...

May 14 10:00 h (May 14, 15:00 GMT)
During the last 24 hours volcanic monitoring system registered about 3 hours of middle-amplitude harmonic tremor and sometimes showed saturation in the registry. The tremor was made in segments pulses with durations up to 17 minutes maximum. Additionally there have been 27 exhalations, however relevant climatic conditions of yesterday did not allow clearly see the volcano, thus, can not confirm the emission of ash during the afternoon.

At 15:52 h and 21:49 h of the day yesterday, two volcanotectonic events was registered of Mc = 1.6 and 1.4 degrees. Today at 08:01 h was an event of Mc = 1.9 degrees. At 09:56 h there was an explosive event that generated an emission of steam and gas with moderate amounts of ash that reached a height of 3 km above the crater and threw fragments fell over a distance of 600 m on the side of the volcano, according to the wind direction, the emision had a NE direction. Prior to the explosion plume emission was observed with a vertical direction and narrow shape. (see Figure 1) . (see Figure 2) . (see picture 3) . (see picture 4) . (see figure 5) . (see figure 6) . (see Figure 7) . From the town of Tianguismanalco shows the emission of ash that can be clearly differentiated from the area of cloudiness in the volcano. (see Figure 8) .

May 20 10:00 h (May 20, 15:00 GMT)

In the last 24 hours the monitoring system recorded 19 volcanic exhalations middle amplitude, due to the climatic conditions of yesterday could not see the crater of the volcano, however at night emission of fragments were observed falling into the crater reaching a height of approximately 500 m (see Figure 1) , (see image 2) . At 05:44 h (local time) the day was registered a volcanotectónico event Mc 2.3

Additionally there were about 6 hours of tremor of low and high frequency, and middle amplitude. During the morning of today you can see a constant emission of water vapor and gas at southwest direction (see Figure 3) .

VOLCANO TURRIALBA: ERUPTION OF ASHES IN THE WEST TODAY CRATER
21 MAY 2013
Turrialba Volcano erupts: Today May 21, 2013 from about 8:30 am
until after 11 am, the Turrialba volcano ash showed strong emission in the
West crater, mainly through two mouths or ducts that fumarole
opened, the first in January 2010 and the second in January 2012 (Figure 1). The mouth 2010
is located in the inner wall west and mouth 2012 on the outer wall, both in West Crater. These ports have remained strong degassing from opening, magmatic gas output at very high temperatures, recorded between 600-800 ° Celsius. The mouth twice in January 2012 issued a moderate amount of
ash, 12 to January 18, 2012. Today May 21, 2013 the two mouths, 2010 and 2012, issued a still undetermined amount of ash, magmatic gases, and aerosols.
So far reported significant ashfall Chopped sector, north of
Volcano and San Jose populations as Ipis of Guadeloupe, Fazio, Zetillal and San Isidro de Coronado. The ash emission observed today was preceded by the
occurrence of seismic signals (hybrid earthquakes) that indicate the onset of breakup
fractures or duct opening. These hybrid seismic records began in largest number today at 4:52 a.m. May 21, 2013. This activity led to a continuous harmonic tremor, which was maintained with moderate amplitude until 6:00 am. A
from 7:20 am turns to increase the harmonic tremor at 8:30 giving way to ash eruption (see Figure 2).

Facing the Killer Volcano (continued)
The docu-drama "Facing the Killer Volcano" was released just days before the 22th anniversary of the death of Maurice and Katia Krafft. I had the opportunity to see the film premiere in 2011 at the General Assembly of the Association European Volcanological who had been allowed to project this document at this time...
The Japanese authorities have done nothing wrong, because many times, they gave the order to evacuate threatened by pyroclastic area. This is confirmed by Report No. 1540-08 relating to the eruption of Unzen as it was presented to the French National Assembly. Here is an excerpt from the testimony of Professor Kazuya Ohta, Director of Volcanological and Seismological Observatory of Shimabara (SEVO)

"On May 30, a pyroclastic flow than 2.8 km long stopped 200 m from dwellings Kamikoba. Although people have received advice from that time to evacuate the area, some came back to collect their belongings and their pets. Several journalists and scientists are also returned to this area to photograph and film the spectacular pyroclastic flows. Firefighters were stationed in a designated area to monitor the empty houses evacuees used by journalists. These journalists were stationed at 4 km away, in front of the casting. I warned by radio, police and the Headquarters for Measures Against Disasters of Shimabara. But the people who were on the "Recommended Zone" did not take my warnings seriously...
Despite all the admiration we may have to Katia and Maurice Krafft, it is clear that they are dead is that they have made a mistake. In addition, it is reasonable to think that if they had emptied places, other people around them would have followed.

To conclude, I think if we had given Maurice choice of his death, this is probably the option he would have chosen. He had seen so many eruptions as future were "rab" as he liked to say. "If I die tomorrow, I do not care." This is what he also says in this short video filmed at the foot of Unzen, shortly before his death:

Possible volcanic erouption soon?

At 5 a.m. Tuesday morning, the Turrialba Volcano, located east of the province of Cartago, began to spew gas and ash from two crater openings, the Volcanological and Seismological Observatory of Costa Rica (Ovsicori) reported. By 8:30 a.m. a significant amount of volcanic material was released from the two openings of volcano, "which may indicate that these materials come from deep areas,” Ovsicori said. "It is uncertain what will happen. Volcanologists are heading to the site to evaluate the activity," the statement said. Experts said Tuesday's activity is “normal for an active volcano such as Turrialba,” but they recommended all nearby communities remain vigilant in coming hours. The released material fell into grasslands and communities in the canton of Turrialba and reached some three kilometers west of the crater. The trail of gases and ash can be seen from various locations in the provinces of Cartago, San Jose, Heredia and Limon. Public access to the volcano area was closed last year due to the activity. The Turrialba Volcano also emitted material in 2007, 2010 and 2012. The last eruptions of the volcano were in 1884.

...Surprisingly, submarine eruptions west of Maui have been reported three times in the past 60 years. The first was in August and September 1955, near Necker Island, 650 km northwest of Honolulu. The most recent was in early 2011, when a sea captain reported “steam rising up violently from the sea surface” in the vicinity of Milwaukee Bank, almost 3,200 km northwest of Honolulu. No samples were obtained, so volcanic activity could not be confirmed.
...
The events of May 22nd were most likely located along a submarine ridge extending northwest from Kaena Point, Oahu. However, in recent years, University of Hawaii and U.S. Geological Survey scientists have explored this region in detail and found no evidence of recent eruptions on the ocean floor. It was thought the fragments might have originated from a 1952 eruption in the San Benedicto Islands off the west coast of Mexico, but the Oahu samples were different. The 1952 San Benedicto pumice was described as “greenish brown” and had no crystals, while the 1956 samples had crystals of olivine and labradorite — minerals common in Hawaiian eruptions.

...The latest update from the SERNAGEOMIN says that over 250 small earthquakes related to magma movement are being recorded per hour at Copahue (although so far continuous volcanic tremor — an almost sure sign of eruption — has not been recorded). No plume has been spotted in the last day in satellite imagery and only a modest, ~400 meter steam-and-ash plume was seen from ground observations. However, the citizens of Caviahue in Argentina, just across the border from Copahue, have reported explosions and incandescence from the volcano.
Volcanic hazard map of Copahue from the SERNAGEOMIN. Red marks lava flow and lahar hazard zones, yellow marks lesser pyroclastic flow hazard zones. The stippled area is potential ash hazard. Image: SERNAGEOMIN.
The sense from these updates and the change in status is that the SERNAGEOMIN expects an explosive event, similar to what we saw in December 2012 from Copahue, in the very near future. Schools in towns near the volcano have closed due to the threat of an eruption. You can check out a hazard map of the volcano below
[link to www.wired.com]

...The ONEMI has also raised the civil alert to Red, so preparations are underway for any potential evacuations for people within 25 km of the volcano (only ~2,240 on the Chilean side). It does seem that the SERNAGEOMIN webcam for Copahue is down again, so I don’t know of any webcams pointed at the volcano — but if you do, let us know in the comments.

3. Conclusion:
Report: Chief OVDAS Reception:
The intensity and type of seismicity observed in recent days, in conjunction with the deformation of the volcanic building, suggest, with a high probability, that the
rise of a magmatic body in the shallow layers of the volcano has entered a process of no return, highly posibiltando extrusion of a dome and its
associated phenomena such as explosive eruptions phreato character-type magmatic and magmatic Vulcan and / or subplinianas, with intensities greater than
eruptive event recorded in December 2012. Such eruptions could generate pyroclastic flows and lahars. It is recommended to focus on a
radius of 15 km around the active crater and on the banks of the rivers originating in the volcano at the Possibility for occurrence of lahars. Therefore it
alert level changes to RED. Importantly, the development process can last several weeks, but also can occur so
anytime untimely

By Erik Klemetti05.27.131:51 PM
...The latest update from the SERNAGEOMIN says that over 250 small earthquakes related to magma movement are being recorded per hour at Copahue (although so far continuous volcanic tremor — an almost sure sign of eruption — has not been recorded).
You can check out a hazard map of the volcano below

...The ONEMI has also raised the civil alert to Red, so preparations are underway for any potential evacuations for people within 25 km of the volcano (only ~2,240 on the Chilean side).

Updated monitoring volcano activity Copahue
Friday, May 24, 2013 - 21:15

Around noon today conducted a flyby at Copahue volcano area, with the participation of Biobío Provincial Governor, the Commander of the Regiment Los Angeles Regional ONEMI staff SERNAGEOMIN staff...
The output pressure of the gases were considered intermediate, based on the intensity of the forms such as "cauliflower" present in the flow. Revealed no crater lake, also not detected the presence of a magmatic body surface. The camera measures temperature at the bottom of the crater, showed two sectors with temperatures near 200 ° C, associated with valve. Pen was observed facing the NNE and column height of approximately 1,000 meters.

The massif has in his record eruptions eruptive history of low to moderate magnitude. One scenario is the occurrence of frequent phreatic or phreatomagmatic eruptions (generated by the interaction of magma and water). Under these conditions, the main danger is the fall of pyroclastic material. In similar but larger eruptions magnitude could generate pyroclastic surges and lahars. The proximal hazard area (within 15 km) likely to be affected by lava and / or lahars not include populated areas. In larger eruptions but lower probability of occurrence, possible pyroclastic flows could extend its effects further afield (within 25 km). The area likely to be affected by ashfall thicknesses greater than 1 cm is located primarily east of the volcano.

Geologists Chip Away at Mystery of Climate’s Influence on Volcanoes
May 24, 2013, 12:19 pm

...Does the rock hold evidence that climate changes have, over time, caused a surge of volcanic eruptions?
“Climate causes volcanoes to erupt. What? It kind of blows your mind,” he said in his Scottish brogue. “It’s fascinating to think that the atmosphere can change what’s happening in the earth.”

Fascinating, and not new. Geologists have speculated for decades that past periods of warming, through the melting of glaciers, might have spurred a newly eruptive era. This is a simplification, but it can be understood as a matter of pressure relief: Taking that icy load off the land may make it easier for magma to surge out. In some situations, it might even cause even more melting.

“If you remove a large ice sheet, then the amount of work required to crack that rock suddenly becomes a lot less,” said Ferguson. “Maybe it’s already got the energy to do it.”

Such evidence does exist in one spot: Iceland. There’s a solid chemical and stratigraphic record showing that the island experienced a volcanic surge after its ice sheet retreated. But Iceland is a geological freak, its volcanism driven by a hot spot and the rifting of tectonic plates. (It even has a word for the flash floods caused by ice-covered eruptions—jokulhlaup.) Ninety percent of the world’s volcanoes do not resemble those of Iceland; they are instead found at subduction zones, where one plate slides under another.

“If there is a good link, that’s where we need to find it,” Ferguson said...

It’s too early to say if Ferguson will succeed. He has rocks and will scan them, sorting their ages by measuring potassium’s radioactive decay into argon. “The best case would be a proof of concept that there’s a good link between glacially driven decompression and volcanic eruption,” he said. “That would be the best-case scenario.”
...Then there’s the question that naturally follows this work: Human beings are causing global warming right now. The glaciers are sulking back from the valleys. Does that mean human-caused warming will result in a noticeable surge in volcanic eruptions?...

The nearly 10,000-ft (2,965m) volcano, which sits in the Andes cordillera, straddling the border with Argentina's Neuquen province, has become increasingly active in recent times.

Chile's Interior and Security Minister Andres Chadwick said that the increased activity could lead to an eruption and officials will begin evacuating about 2,240 people, or 460 families, within a 25km (15.5 mile) radius soon.

"This evacuation is obligatory; it's not voluntary," Mr Chadwick said.

According to Chile's Emergency Office, the evacuation could last about 48 hours, but could be delayed because of heavy rains.

The volcano is located hundreds of kilometres from the country's capital Santiago in south-central Chile's Bio Bio region.
Argentine officials have issued a yellow alert, but said evacuations were not necessary.

However, school classes in Caviahue-Copahue, home to some 900 people, were suspended and access to the volcano is closed within a 4km (2.5 mile) radius on the Argentine side. Nearby towns, including Villa de Caviahue, are open as usual.

Officials in Argentina said they flew over the area at the weekend and are monitoring the volcano with a network of web cameras.

A red alert was last issued for the Copahue volcano in December, when a mile-high cloud of ash was seen billowing out of the crater.

The last major eruption occurred in 1991. Some 20 years later, in 2001, it became highly active with blasts and gases.

In mid-2011, ash from a volcano in Chile's Puyehue-Cordon Caulle chain that erupted after decades lying dormant forced the sporadic cancellation of hundreds of flights, especially in neighbouring Argentina and Uruguay.

From the last 24 h monitoring system recorded 22 volcanic exhalations and 40 minutes moderate amplitude harmonic tremor with periods of low frecuecia tremor during yesterday clouds not allowed to observe the constant emission of water vapor, gas and moderate amounts of ash. During this day has been observed a constant emission of steam and gas that reached an average height of 500 m above the crater towards the southwest.
