Boris Behncke 1 day

There are strange and alarmist "news" articles circulating which cite me as saying that there will soon be a devastating eruption at Etna

more precisely, on the east flank of Etna. Well, since Etna is not giving any sign of preparing a new flank eruption, how could I say that?

Etna is well capable of producing very destructive eruptions, but distributing false and alarmist news is of no use for those concerned.

Kikai Caldera is a massive mostly submerged caldera up to 19 kilometres (12 mi) in diameter in the Osumi Islands of Kagoshima prefecture, Japan. It is the remains of the ancient eruption of a gigantic volcano. Kikai Caldera was the source of the Akahoya eruption, one of the largest eruptions during the Holocene (10,000 years ago to present). About 6,300 years ago, pyroclastic flows from that eruption reached the coast of southern Kyushu up to 100 km (62 mi) away, and ash fell as far as Hokkaido. The eruption produced about 150 km3 of tephra, giving it a Volcanic Explosivity Index of 7. Kikai is still an active volcano. Minor eruptions occur frequently on Mount Io, one of the post-caldera subaerial volcanic peaks on Iojima. Iojima is one of three volcanic islands, two of which lie on the caldera rim. The most recent eruptions have occurred in 2004.

it's very far from Tokyo, over 1000 km)

A small eruption might be underway at Satsuma-Iojima, part of the Kikae caldera, off the southern coast of Kyushu in Japan. The island volcano was reported to have a thin plume that reached 8 km (27,000 feet)*, but beyond this, details are scant. The Japanese Meteorological Agency raised the alert status at Satsuma-Iojima to Level 2, which means to not approach the crater. I took a look at today’s Aqua and Terra images and sure enough, the Aqua/MODIS images, you can see a thin plume drifting off to the west (see below) — nothing too impressive, but still, clear signs of new activity at Satsuma-Iojima.
The last eruption from the Kikae caldera area was back in 2004, when it produced a similar small plume. Between 2000-2004, the volcano produced a few VEI 2 eruptions, mainly from a rhyolite dome at Tokara-Iwo-jima (another name for Satsuma-Iojima; see above). There is evidence that pyroclastic flows from Kikai travelled 100 km over the ocean to reach the southern shores of Kyushu — and that would require a large eruption, such as the VEI 7 eruption that occurred in ~4350 B.C.E.

The Tokara-Iwo-Jima (Satsuma Iojima) rhyolite dome seen on April 12, 2012. Steam can clearly be seen coming from the dome:

A Journey Inside the Volcano
mpollock May 31st, 2013
ICELAND – You may remember that Team Iceland is trying to determine the origin of interesting columnar-jointed features exposed in the interior of a subglacial pillow ridge. We have several hypotheses, one of which is that they could be related to the internal magma plumbing system. There’s no better way to know what’s inside of a volcano than by actually going there. Fortunately, we’re able to explore the interior of nearby Thrihnukagigur Volcano through the Inside the Volcano Tour...

This is the questions scientists are trying to answer this week at London’s British Museum during a conference entitled “When Europe was covered by ice and ash”.
Some researchers are suggesting that Neanderthals were driven to extinction by a massive volcanic eruption of the Campi Flegrei near Naples 39,000 years ago that led to the triumph of the Homo Sapiens. That was the biggest volcanic eruption in Europe for more than 200,000 years and scientists say that its enormous plumes of ash would have blotted out the sun for months, or possibly years...

Volcano Activity in Nicaragua on Saturday, 08 June, 2013 at 04:42 (04:42 AM) UTC.

Description
Volcanic tremors and small-scale eruptions Friday put the Nicaraguan Army on alert in case an early warning is required, said the head of the army's Civil Defense in the western Chinandega department Maj. Carlos Caceres. According to his division, the San Cristobal Volcano, located 132 kilometers southwest of the capital Managua, registered some 14 mini-eruptions Friday, accompanied by a cloud of gas and ash over the crater. The Nicaraguan Institute of Territorial Studies (Ineter) said a team of its experts have been stationed for several days some 650 meters from the crater, to better assess the situation. Until now, the experts believe that all volcanic activity has been concentrated inside the crater, and therefore has not posed a danger to the 20 communities situated within a five-kilometer radius of San Cristobal. The Civil Defense's Lt. Col. Gustavo Ramos, who is part of Ineter's team in the area, told the local daily El Nuevo Diario that they were taking samples of the gas emanating from the crater. According to the army division, at least six properties near the crater, including the one hosting Ineter's experts, could be affected if volcanic activity increases. San Cristobal is one of Nicaragua's highest and most active volcanoes, measuring 1,745 meters in height.

Volcano Eruption in Russia [Asia] on Sunday, 09 June, 2013 at 16:52 (04:52 PM) UTC.

Description
The Kamchatkan volcano Shiveluch has thrice emitted columns of hot volcanic ash and gas. The tallest plume reached nine kilometers above the sea level, the Kamchatkan branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences' Geophysical Service reported on Sunday. A code orange alert was issued for the volcano. "Volcano seismicity is excessive, with rocks tumbling down its slopes," the report said. In turn, the Kamchatkan territorial department of the Russian Emergency Situations Ministry said Shiveluch did not jeopardize residential areas and there had been no ash-fall. Rescuers do not recommend visiting the erupting volcano, because ash may cause allergy in people and clog automobile systems. Shiveluch is the northernmost active volcano of Kamchatka; it is situated 45 kilometers away from the Klyuchi town in the Ust-Kamchatsk district with the population of about 5,000. It is also one of the largest volcanoes in Kamchatka. Activity of Shiveluch intensified in May 2009, and a crack of about 30 meters deep went through its dome.

Copahue (Chile-Argentina)
OVDAS-SERNAGEOMIN reported that during 4-11 June white plumes recorded by a web camera rose at most 200 m above Copahue and drifted N and E. During 4-5 June seismicity had decreased with respect to the previous 24-hour period; the majority of the signals were low-magnitude hybrid events, detected at an average rate of 42 per hour. During 5-6 June seismicity was similar to the previous period, with an average of 50 events per hour being detected. Seismicity increased during 6-7 June; an average of 84 events per hour was detected. During 7-8 June seismicity fluctuated with a high average of 124 events per hour then decreased to a low average of 8 events per hour; the overall average was 62 events per hour. Seismicity decreased during 8-9 June; only 5 events per hour were detected. On 9 June OVDAS-SERNAGEOMIN scientists aboard an overflight to locate sites for the installation of three additional seismic stations observed fumaroles inside Del Agrio Crater, and gas emissions that rose at most 200 m and drifted NE. They noted that no lava dome was present. During 9-10 June the number of earthquakes increased to an average of 20 events per hour. The Alert Level remained at Orange.

Ibu (Indonesia)
CVGHM reported that during May through 6 June white-to-gray plumes rose 200-450 m above Ibu's crater rim. Seismicity increased and volcanic tremor was detected. The lava dome contained to grow, especially the N part, and in early June had grown taller than the N crater rim. Based on visual and instrumental observations, as well as the hazard potential, CVGHM increased the Alert Level to 3 (on a scale of 1-4) on 7 June. The public was warned to stay at least 3 km away from the active crater...

Kelimutu (Indonesia)
CVGHM reported that on 3 June the water in Kelimutu’s Crater II (Tiwu Nua Muri Kooh Tai Crater) turned from blue to a light brown color, “smoke” rose 50 m above the crater, “rustling water sounds” were heard near the wall of Crater I (Tiwu Ata Polo), and a sharp sulfur odor was noted. That evening a weak sulfur odor was reported in Pemo (3 km). Plants within 2 km S and SE appeared to have wilted...
