Earth age is 4.54 billion years, higher forms of life age more than 500 million years. The very fact of their existence for so long means that there are a large number of well-known and as yet unknown mechanisms of feedback which largely soften of global cataclysms consequences each time when they happen , and generally returns of very complex "mechanism"with name of "Earth" if and not to original state , but at least to a new long-term condition of stability (up to the next disaster) . Namely it allows such a long time to exist and to evolve life on it . Of course, with inevitable costs, which we know as the periods of the "great extinctions", but even they eventually just reinforces evolution (why and how - is a separate issue). Known and still unknown us feedback mechanisms, should have a huge potential impact on the "mechanism" by the name of "Earth", otherwise they would not work the way they work . And here we come to the most important question, which unfortunately "deniers" of global climate change (special case - global warming) totally fail to understand :
we do not know what, how and when might "switch on" these powerful mechanisms. That, when unexpectedly turns on , can unintentionally kill insects (ie us) which consider themselves omnipotent hosts of mother Earth . But we already know for sure that we able, themselves realizing, accidentally press the lever, which launches them. That is the essence of the problem of climate change why scientists with such alarm tracks the undeniable signs of global warming:

Abstract
Earth's present-day response to enhanced glacial melting resulting from climate change can be measured using Global Positioning System (GPS) technology. We present data from 62 continuously operating GPS instruments in Iceland. Statistically significant upward velocity and accelerations are recorded at 27 GPS stations, predominantly located in the Central Highlands region of Iceland, where present-day thinning of the Iceland ice caps results in velocities of more than 30 mm/yr and uplift accelerations of 1-2 mm/yr2. We use our acceleration estimates to back-calculate to a time of zero velocity, which coincides with the initiation of ice loss in Iceland from ice mass balance calculations and Arctic warming trends. We show, through a simple inversion, a direct relationship between ice mass balance measurements and vertical position and show that accelerated unloading is required to reproduce uplift observations for a simple elastic layer over viscoelastic half-space model.

arguing as philosophizing amateur, i would certainly say that this is true. how come? rift was born many millions of years before we began to talk here on GLP, and will die after many millions of years after we leave this frail world. He lives, and his whole life is a continuous chain of events - huge (hundreds) , not very small (a lot thousands) and very small (each day and billions). so, of course, what is happening now around (or rather under) Bard, event. However, from the standpoint of geological much more correct not to allocate this event into something very individual and extraordinary - "EVENT!"
