Earthquakes recorded in Snafellsjokull volcano

Snafellsjokull volcano is not often in the news in Iceland. But today there was a short news about it due a study that was done last summer on earthquake activity in Snafellsjokull volcano. The study was to see if there where any earthquake activity in Snafellsjokull volcano. The results are really interesting, the main result was there is a lot of earthquake activity in Snafellsjokull volcano. But also that most of the earthquakes take place on the depth from 9 to 13 km depth. This study was done by Matteo Lupi and Florian Fuchs at Bonn University in Iceland.

Ijen volcano in East Java has calmed down again, although its alert level is still at 3 (out of 4).
Our expedition leader Andi visited the volcano and the observatory and confirms that seismic activity and degassing from the lake have decreased during the past 2-3 weeks. However, PVMBG ( the Volcanological Survey of Indonesia) still keeps the status at level 3 ("eruption warning") and the crater is off-limits to tourists.

At 06:35 h (local time), the monitoring system recorded the beginning of an exhalation sequence with tremor, that continues at the moment of this report. The first exhalation of this sequence had an explosive component. It generated the emission of incandescent fragments over the north and northeast flanks at distances of 500-800 m (see image 1) and a dense plume of steam, gases and ash (see image 2). The incandescent fragments fall over the snow and generated a small water and ash flow.

Tungurahua Volcano, Ecuador: Increased activity

At 06:19 (local time) today, April 17, 2012, there was a further increase in the activity of the Tungurahua volcano, the Instituto Geofísico (IG) reported.

CLEVELAND Chuginadak Island 52.825°N, 169.944°W; summit elev. 1730 m

AVO reported that elevated surface temperatures were observed over Cleveland in satellite imagery during 11-12 April. Two explosions were detected on 13 April by distant seismic stations and infrasound arrays. Neither of these explosions produced an ash cloud that could be detected in satellite images. There was no evidence of explosive activity or eruption of lava in the summit crater during 14-17 April. No seismic information was available because Cleveland does not have a real-time seismic network.

POPOCATEPETL México 19.023°N, 98.622°W; summit elev. 5426 m

CENAPRED reported that during 11-15 April steam-and-gas emissions from Popocatépetl occasionally contained ash; emissions contained a substantial amount of ash on 12 April. Seismicity increased on 13 April and at 2220 an explosion ejected incandescent blocks that landed on the NE flank as far as 500 m away from the crater rim. A larger explosion at 2236 ejected incandescent blocks that landed even further away on all flanks; an ash plume rose 2 km above the crater and drifted ENE. Ashfall was reported in San Pedro Benito Juarez (10-12 km SE), where the explosion was also heard. On 14 April gas-and-steam plumes that contained small amounts of ash drifted SW. Multiple emissions occurred with increased incandescence from the crater. Ejected incandescent blocks landed back in the crater or on the flanks 500-800 m from the rim. Gas-and-ash plumes drifted ESE. Ashfall was reported in multiple towns, including Puebla (50 km to the E), San Pedro Benito Juarez, Santiago Xalitzintla (15 km NE), Tianguismanalco, and Atlixco (25 km SE).

OVSICORI-UNA reported that a small phreatic eruption occurred within and around the hot acidic lake of Rincon de la Vieja at 1400 on 14 April. Observers from nearby communities N of the volcano reported some sediment deposition along the outer N flanks of the main active crater and a white steam plume rising to a considerable height above the crater.

The volcano straddles two Mexican states, Puebla and Morelos, about 40 miles south of Mexico City. Areas close to the volcano have been closed off, and people are warned to stay at least seven miles from the crater, where a lava dorm is forming, according to the National Disaster Prevention Center. Nearby residents are urged to cover their mouths to avoid inhaling ash, and to clean it from weak rooftops. Reventador continues to be mildly active with ongoing weak to moderate steam and ash emissions. The Instituto Geofísico reports a 2 km high column of steam and ash rising from Reventador volcano on 18 April. The ash cloud moved to the NW.

The monitoring system of Popocatepetl detected 1 exhalations middle range at 10:32 h (local time), that generated a pulse of the gas plume accompanied by a moderate amount of ash (see image 1) . Since this event and until the time of this report, several segments of spasmodic tremor, including signals of low intensity exhalations, were recorded. The tremor segments have a duration of 5 to 10 minutes. The most important exhalation of this segments was at 12:08 h.

The cloudy conditions only allow the partial observation of the crater during the morning. The steam and gas plume, accompanied by small amounts of ash, presented pulses that reach 800 m and are transported to the east-northeast.

Lava levels in Kīlauea’s newest crater, the Overlook Vent within Halema‘uma‘u, have reached their highest point of 70m / 230ft below the 1974 crater floor, matching conditions in March 2011 just prior to the 5-day Kamoamoa fissure eruption. Glow from the edge of Kīlauea caldera has been strong over the past month, except on exceptionally rainy nights! Speaking of the volcano’s summit, it has been swelling significantly over the past 6 months – a total increase of 6cm / 2.4in across the caldera!
