PETROPAVLOVSK-KAMCHATSKY, December 11 (RIA Novosti) – The erupting Plosky Tolbachik volcano in Russia’s Far Eastern Kamchatka Peninsula is spilling a record 1,200 metric tons of lava every second, local seismologists reported on Tuesday. The 3,085-meter Plosky Tolbachik, which is part of a volcanic complex located 343 kilometers from the region’s capital of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, erupted on November 27 for the first time in 36 years. “This year’s eruption is very powerful. [link to volcanocafe.wordpress.com] interesting comments... Indeed a very interesting discussion, but in the part relating to the alleged subglacial eruptions and their logic is questionable: if what was happening under the ice could not break through, then what was going on at all can hardly be called "eruption" . Why? Because the "eruption" - is out at least more or less substantial volume of magma and gases. 800 meters of the ice sheet above it certainly does not have to melt (this must be a huge amount of effusion). But it sure would have created so much pressure that the ice would burst explosively, especially in July, when he was already substantially weakened by melting with significant penetration depth of melt water (creating numerous large internal cavity, where the water evaporates and water vapor would have increased the pressure and accelerated to cracking). So I think that if there was - it was only very small emissions, possibly opening geothermal, nothing more. |

A lot of others worldwide ! Volcanic activity world-wide 10-11 December 2012: Lokon, Popocatépetl, Fuego, Santiaguito, Reventador, Nevado del Ruiz, Machin,Tjörnes Fracture Zone, Coso Tuesday Dec 11, 2012 14:34 PM | Age: 5 hrs BY: T Another strong explosion occurred this morning at Lokon volcano in North Sulawesi (Indonesia). The eruption produced an ash plume about 3 km high and has been followed by several smaller explosions. This markes one of the most intense phases of activity during the year. Popocatépetl volcano in Mexico continues to produce frequent (about 3 per hour) but small emissions, only some of which contain some ash. In Guatemala, Fuego volcano continues to erupt a lava flow towards the Ceniza canyon. On 10 Dec morning, the flow had increased to 700 m length and produced glowing avalanches that reached the vegetation line. Few weak strombolian explosions, sometimes accompanied by rumbling sounds, were occurring as well. Activity of Santiaguito remains being dominantly effusive. The new block lava flow that had recently formed on the southern flank of the Caliente dome produces glowing avalanches. The other flows on the SE side remain active as well. A constant steam plume rises from the dome to an altitude of approx. 3000 m a.s.l. and incandescence is seen at the dome at night. Compared to November, the activity of Reventador volcano in Ecuador has decreased, but weak explosions with small ash emissions continue, accompanied by moderate seismic activity. Nevado del Ruiz volcano in Colombia remains at low activity, with occasional tremor pulses and volcanic quakes, sometimes accompanied by small ash eruptions. On December 7, 2012 at 05:47 (local time) a magnitude 3.1 volcano-tectonic earthquake occurred at 14.6 km depth southeast of main dome of Cerro Machin volcano. The quake was felt by residents near the volcano, and in the towns of Cajamarca and Ibague. The seismic swarm in the Tjörnes Fracture Zone north off Iceland still continues at reduced intensity and there seems no end in sight. Most quakes are very small, but there are still occasional quakes at around magnitude 3, and the area remains at risk for a larger quake. The recent earthquake swarm at Coso Volcanic Field in California seems to be over. The swarm which began in late November included hundreds of events ranging from less than magnitude 0.0 to M3.7, at depths of >10 km at the beginning to shallow 2 km near the end of the swarm. A small magmatic intrusion could have been the cause. [link to www.volcanodiscovery.com] |

[link to www.wired.com] Claude G During the Great Tolbachik Fissure Eruption in 1975, the volcano spilled on average 40 cubic metres of magma per second while at present its productivity is about 400 cubic metres or 1,200 tonnes per second. Hmm. Let's check real total volume for today. If data above true then: 400 cubic meters per second õ 3600 sec in hour x 24 hour x 15 days of eruption = 518400000 cubic meters = 518 cubic kilometers It's volume of FIVE Tabmora's 1815 year eruption (VEI 6 - 100 km3 [link to en.wikipedia.org] or half of volume (estimates) of great Yellowstone eruption (VEI 9 - 1000 km3). ![]() But other data above force doubt on this assessment: 10-20 kilometers of lava flow length => 10000-20000 meters of lenhth x (I guess) width of flow about 100-200 meters õ 8-10 meters of thickness = min 8000000 cubic meters max 40000000 cubic meters. It means from 8 to 40 cubic kilometers. In any case not small I guess this estimate more realistic. ![]() Mistake in account, cubic kilometers on 3 zeroes lesser! Correct: It means for first result 0,5 cubic kilometers for second result from 0,01 to 0,04 cubic kilometers. Really not big volume. |
