PETROPAVLOVSK-KAMCHATSKY, December 11 (RIA Novosti) – The erupting Plosky Tolbachik volcano in Russia’s Far Eastern Kamchatka Peninsula is spilling a record 1,200 metric tons of lava every second, local seismologists reported on Tuesday.

The 3,085-meter Plosky Tolbachik, which is part of a volcanic complex located 343 kilometers from the region’s capital of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, erupted on November 27 for the first time in 36 years.

“This year’s eruption is very powerful. During the Great Tolbachik Fissure Eruption in 1975, the volcano spilled on average 40 cubic meters of magma per second while at present its ‘productivity’ is about 400 cubic meters or 1,200 tons per second,” said Gennady Karpov, a deputy director of the Institute of Volcanology and Seismology under the Russian Academy of Sciences.

Katla cauldrons: actually Icelandic scientists said that in July 2011 what most likely happened was a subglacial eruption of Katla. Geothermal heat cannot melt such a large part of the glacier!

In Iceland, a VEI2 eruption CANNOT erupt through the ice of Vatnajokull or Myrdalsjokull, since it is too weak to do that; it only melts part of the ice. Only an eruption of intensity VEI4 or stronger can create such a ash cloud powerful enough to cut through the 800 meter thick ice caps.

And in July 2011, there was most likely not only one subglacial eruption of Katla, but also one of Hamarinn volcano, beneath the ice cap. Both eruptions were probably in the range VEI0-VEI2, as often occurs in Iceland, which cannot create a ash cloud through the thick ice cap.

After that summer, I had a flight above both ice caps, and I saw many cauldrons at both of these volcanoes, which were not there before the July 2011 events.

Reply to last post (to Inge): yes, the earthquake pattern you posted does reflect the two tectonic faults of the Tjornes transform zone. Both faults seem to be releasing a lot of stress recently.

This does not seem to stop. There has been enough time since the last major earthquake, especially in the Husavík-Flatey fault, for a new major quake to occur.

Its not going to be with small earthquakes – even if they are by thousands – that the strain is going to e sufficiently released. Because one thousand M2 earthquakes is only equivalent to one single M5 earthquake. We have probably at least 10x more of this energy to be released (to give approx a M6 earthquake).

Indeed a very interesting discussion, but in the part relating to the alleged subglacial eruptions and their logic is questionable: if what was happening under the ice could not break through, then what was going on at all can hardly be called "eruption" . Why? Because the "eruption" - is out at least more or less substantial volume of magma and gases. 800 meters of the ice sheet above it certainly does not have to melt (this must be a huge amount of effusion). But it sure would have created so much pressure that the ice would burst explosively, especially in July, when he was already substantially weakened by melting with significant penetration depth of melt water (creating numerous large internal cavity, where the water evaporates and water vapor would have increased the pressure and accelerated to cracking). So I think that if there was - it was only very small emissions, possibly opening geothermal, nothing more.

Lokon volcano (Sulawesi, Indonesia): new ash explosion with plume reaching 3 km height

Another ash explosion occurred at 12:10 local time today, followed by a smaller one at 12:41 and 13:16 local time.
The first explosion was relatively violent and produced a plume rising approx. 3000 m visible from Manado city 15 km to the north and the explosion sound caused people in nearby Tomohon to run out on the streets.
The following 2 explosions were much smaller and produced plumes only a few 100 m in height. Volcanologists stationed in Kakaskasen said that volcanic tremor was recorded almost continuously.

Volcanic activity world-wide 10-11 December 2012: Lokon, Popocatépetl, Fuego, Santiaguito, Reventador, Nevado del Ruiz, Machin,Tjörnes Fracture Zone, Coso

Tuesday Dec 11, 2012 14:34 PM | Age: 5 hrs

BY: T

Another strong explosion occurred this morning at Lokon volcano in North Sulawesi (Indonesia). The eruption produced an ash plume about 3 km high and has been followed by several smaller explosions. This markes one of the most intense phases of activity during the year.

Popocatépetl volcano in Mexico continues to produce frequent (about 3 per hour) but small emissions, only some of which contain some ash.

In Guatemala, Fuego volcano continues to erupt a lava flow towards the Ceniza canyon. On 10 Dec morning, the flow had increased to 700 m length and produced glowing avalanches that reached the vegetation line. Few weak strombolian explosions, sometimes accompanied by rumbling sounds, were occurring as well.

Activity of Santiaguito remains being dominantly effusive. The new block lava flow that had recently formed on the southern flank of the Caliente dome produces glowing avalanches. The other flows on the SE side remain active as well.
A constant steam plume rises from the dome to an altitude of approx. 3000 m a.s.l. and incandescence is seen at the dome at night.

Compared to November, the activity of Reventador volcano in Ecuador has decreased, but weak explosions with small ash emissions continue, accompanied by moderate seismic activity.

Nevado del Ruiz volcano in Colombia remains at low activity, with occasional tremor pulses and volcanic quakes, sometimes accompanied by small ash eruptions.

On December 7, 2012 at 05:47 (local time) a magnitude 3.1 volcano-tectonic earthquake occurred at 14.6 km depth southeast of main dome of Cerro Machin volcano. The quake was felt by residents near the volcano, and in the towns of Cajamarca and Ibague.

The seismic swarm in the Tjörnes Fracture Zone north off Iceland still continues at reduced intensity and there seems no end in sight. Most quakes are very small, but there are still occasional quakes at around magnitude 3, and the area remains at risk for a larger quake.

The recent earthquake swarm at Coso Volcanic Field in California seems to be over. The swarm which began in late November included hundreds of events ranging from less than magnitude 0.0 to M3.7, at depths of >10 km at the beginning to shallow 2 km near the end of the swarm. A small magmatic intrusion could have been the cause. [link to www.volcanodiscovery.com]

Could well be. Very small ones, but at an interesting depth, and Askja is “under the microscope” (as Icelanders say: “undir smásjá”) since last summer, or even longer, I’d say. All of them confirmed.

There has been a remarkable uplift at Askja lately: [link to strokkur.raunvis.hi.is]

There was also this (possible) intrusion at the high temperature or low temperature areas at Öxarfjördur [link to hraun.vedur.is] , and I saw somewhere that this also could be connected to Askja’s system. Which then would be longer still than Bárdarbunga’s and the longest in Iceland. (over 200 km)

weird... still no information about this remarkable event from Cenapred.
But Cenapred issued special nore concerning UFO above Popo at October 25th LoL
With conclusions (Google translation):
1. Accordingly analyzed by specialists of the Center, this
event has no relation to the activity of the volcano Popocatepetl.
Apparent at the moment of contact with the object light and crater
in minutes later, there was no change in the signals
earthquake or some other parameter of volcano monitoring. this
to suggest that, although visually the light signal appears
enter the crater, most likely moves in a
much farther back up the volcano. This assertion is supported
by the fact that none of the other four network cameras
visual monitoring of the volcano Popocatepetl, which have other angles
vision, saw the object mentioned.
2. The lightning in the atmosphere, as recorded by the camera
CENAPRED in Altzomoni and by Televisa chamber located
in the same place, could be associated with an astronomical event...
3. It is not excluded, however, the possibility that the object was a
artificial satellite fragment upon entering the atmosphere has
left, by frictional effects, a bright trace similar to that
generate a meteor.
4. Note that for the aforementioned two cases, it is necessary
validation and exhaustive analysis by experts and institutions

During the Great Tolbachik Fissure Eruption in 1975, the volcano spilled on average 40 cubic metres of magma per second while at present its productivity is about 400 cubic metres or 1,200 tonnes per second.

Hmm. Let's check real total volume for today.
If data above true then:
400 cubic meters per second õ 3600 sec in hour x 24 hour x 15 days of eruption = 518400000 cubic meters =
518 cubic kilometers

It's volume of FIVE Tabmora's 1815 year eruption (VEI 6 - 100 km3 [link to en.wikipedia.org]
or half of volume (estimates) of great Yellowstone eruption (VEI 9 - 1000 km3).
gasp

But other data above force doubt on this assessment:

10-20 kilometers of lava flow length =>
10000-20000 meters of lenhth x (I guess) width of flow about 100-200 meters õ 8-10 meters of thickness = min 8000000 cubic meters max 40000000 cubic meters.
It means from 8 to 40 cubic kilometers. In any case not small

I guess this estimate more realistic.

White Island has grown itself a small dome. Interesting.

By early December, the length of both lava flow was about 10 km. Currently, the upper crack stopped working. At the bottom of the fissure formation of cinder cones and the outpouring of the lava flow, the length of which is about 20 km and height of the front of the 8-10 m

Collapse Expand I don't have numbers, but my guess is the volume is still pretty low. < 0.1 cubic kilometers as a max? Very hard to tell.

#Tolbachik volcano, Kamchatka. Volcano is erupting 1200 tonnes of lava every second.

I guess this estimate more realistic.

ahhh
Mistake in account, cubic kilometers on 3 zeroes lesser!
Correct:
It means
for first result 0,5 cubic kilometers
for second result from 0,01 to 0,04 cubic kilometers.
Really not big volume.
