Thousands of residents of the Palue Islands in Sikka, East Nusa Tenggara, have reportedly fled from their homes after their roofs and windows were rattled by erupting of Mount Rokatenda. Residents were evacuated to Maumere, Sikka, Ropa and Ende as the volcano sent debris and volcanic material cascading down its slopes. Residents reportedly found it hard to get clean water as many water sources had been contaminated with volcanic ash. Officials have called on residents to protect themselves by wearing masks.

Volcano Eruption in Argentina on Saturday, 22 December, 2012 at 16:01 (04:01 PM) UTC.

Description
A Satellite image taken on 14:00 on 22 November shows a large ash plume drifting 110 KM SE from Copahue volcano. Ash fall has been reported in Loncopue village in Argentina, 50 KM SE of the volcano. The volcano's last confirmed eruption was in 2000, although one report stated eruptions in 2001 as well. It is apparently still a 'small' eruption, but the Alert Level for the volcano has been raised from GREEN to ORANGE.

Eruption May Have Started at Copahue on the Chile/Argentina Border

Quick post, but I said if something interesting happened…

I was sent a GOES image showing a fairly strong plume from Copahue on the Chile/Argentina border – a plume that sure looks like an eruption from the volcano. Sure enough, reports out of Chile and Argentina show that the volcano is producing a pretty impressive plume. Sounds like geologists will conduct a flyover to see what is going on sometime today. I’ll try to dig up more information as I can find it, but feel free to add any info here as well, but there wasn’t much on yesterday’s Terra pass.

UPDATES: Supposedly this is a shot of the plume seen from close to the volcano. I can’t confirm its authenticity. Also, not surprisingly, the volcano has been moved up to Orange Alert. Ash is also apparently falling 50 km from the volcano.

According to a tweet from John Seach based on VAAC information, the plume might be as tall as 9.5 km / 31,000 feet.

Copahue last had an eruption in 2000 and has a history of VEI 2+ explosive eruptions.

Copahue volcano began an eruption process this morning in Neuquen province and prompting the Chilean Emergency network to issue a yellow alert. Despite the volcano is in constant activity, a large cloud of ashes spweed by Copahue this morning alarmed locals and authorities. First reports indicated that a rutinary emergency operation in the localities of Copahue and Caviahue, which are close the volcano. Nevertheless, the possibility of evacuating locals was dismissed.

December 22, 2012 – CHILE - Increased activity at a volcano on the border of Chile and Argentina has authorities in both countries on alert. The Copahue volcano in Argentina’s Neuquen province and Chile’s Biobio region began spewing ash and gas early on Saturday, but officials say it’s still in an early eruption stage. Chile’s Mining Minister Hernan de Solminihac says the volcano’s smoke plume led Argentine emergency officials to issue a yellow alert and constantly monitor its activity in case of a full eruption. Flights expected to pass by the area around the volcano have been warned. Officials say there’s no need yet to evacuate people near the volcano, which is part of the Andes mountain chain. One more quick update – I grabbed the brand new Terra/MODIS imagery for South America and the plume from the Copahue was glorious – stretching over 350 km across Argentina to the east of the volcano. For a sense of scale on the image, the distance between Copahue and the Embalse los Barreales is ~225 km. The plume itself has been reported to be over 9.5 km / 30,000 feet tall.
