Weak ash emissions from deep strombolian activity within the New SE crater has been observed since last evening (20 April). If the eruption patterns remains more or less the same, a new paroxysm is probably under way within the next days.

Since the last report, 7 h ago, the volcano Popocatepetl has remained relatively calm, registering only 7 low intensity exhalations accompanied by steam, gas emissions and in some times with small amounts of ash. The most important ocurred at 15:56 h and it generated an ash column of 800 meters to SE (see image 1).

At the time of this report shows the volcano with an emission of water vapor and gas that moves southeast with a height of 500 meters above the crater (see image 2).

The traffic light alert signal remains in Yellow Phase 3. This level implies:

1. Announcing the situation and measures taken to the public and the media.

2. Prepare personnel, equipment and evacuation shelters.

3. Implement specific measures in the most vulnerable.

4. Implement preventive measures against ash fall, lahars and against fragments in vulnerable regions.

5. Alert air navigation systems.

Brief note about events in Mexico:

It appears that the activity at Popocatépetl has picked up, with more ash emissions and even (unconfirmed) reports of new lava at the summit. This would all suggest that the potential for a significant eruption is high. A report from the BBC says that volcanic bombs are being thrown over a kilometer from the vent and “60 opening” have appeared on the volcano. I actually have no idea what that means – are there cracks at the summit or just lots of fumarolic activity near the summit crater? The explosions from the volcano have been large enough to rattle windows in communities surrounding the volcano.
