The Ria Novosti press agency indicates that the Ivan Groznyy (“Ivan the Terrible”) volcano erupted early this morning on Iturup in the Kuril Islands. The volcano spewed a column of ash onto the surrounding area. Local people in the nearest towns, Goryachiye Klyuchi (9 km away) and the city of Kurilsk (25 km), noticed a faint smell of H2S, which disappeared later.
