AVO indicates that a small explosive event at Cleveland volcano occurred on August 19th, at approximately 6:55 PM (local time). Satellite images showed that a low level ash cloud tracked to the southeast and dispersed over several hours.

With current volcanic eruptions activities on the island and displaced islanders have been living in care centre refugees camp for over 8 years now since 2004. We have no hope in permanent resettlement on mainland Bogia, Madang Province, PNG.
Any world Human Rights group out there who can assist us and bring our long suffering problems to respective world organizations that can raise this matter to PNG Government to take action against such in human long delaying tactics"

That trend, plus changes in climate that boost average summertime temperatures, increase the probability of widespread melting in the future. "I don’t think it will take another 150 years to have another such event," he says.

Tungurahua volcano emits a near constant steam and ash plume rising on average 1.5 km with peaks of up to 4 km above the crater. This activity produces significant ash fall in areas west of the volcano. Intermittent explosions throw bombs to 500 m height and up to 1.5 km radial distance. A strong SO2 plume can be seen on satellite imagery.

Arctic sea ice set to hit record low

Scientists at the US National Snow and Ice Data Center said data showed that the sea ice extent was tracking below the previous record low, set in 2007.

Latest figures show that on 13 August ice extent was 483,000 sq km (186,000 sq miles) below the previous record low for the same date five years ago.

The ice is expected to continue melting until mid- to late September..

"The previous [Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change] report (published in 2007) stated that the likely date for an ice-free Arctic in the summer - and definitions for this vary a bit - was 2100," he explained.

"When we had the 2007 minimum, that date was brought forward to 2030-2040..

Arctic sea ice plays a key role in help keep polar regions cool and helps control the global climate system.

As the ice has a bright surface, it reflects about 80% of the sunlight that hits it back into space.

When the sea ice melts, it exposes more of the dark ocean surface, resulting in 90% of the sunlight being absorbed, which warms the Arctic ocean.

Tungurahua's eruption continues. This morning, a tall ash plume was rising to 32,000 ft (ca. 10 km) altitude and drifting west. A slight decrease in tremor is visible on the latest seismograms.
So far, effects of the eruption have been limited to ash fall. In canton Quero, the ash fall during the past days has damaged more than 5000 hectares of plant cultivations and hit about 2.000 families.
