Antartic ice melting with acceleration too
[link to www.nasa.gov]
...Meanwhile, measurements from the Grace satellites confirm that Antarctica is losing mass 11. Isabella Velicogna of JPL and the University of California, Irvine, uses Grace data to weigh the Antarctic ice sheet from space. Her work shows that the ice sheet is not only losing mass, but it is losing mass at an accelerating rate. "The important message is that it is not a linear trend. A linear trend means you have the same mass loss every year. The fact that it’s above linear, this is the important idea, that ice loss is increasing with time," she says. And she points out that it isn’t just the Grace data that show accelerating loss; the radar data do, too. "It isn't just one type of measurement. It's a series of independent measurements that are giving the same results, which makes it more robust."

... As the reflectivity of snow decreases, it’s easier to warm the snow and produce melting, says Jan van Angelen, a polar meteorologist at Utrecht University in the Netherlands. Although the July melting event was brought about by an unusual warm spell, it’s reasonable to suggest that such events will become more common in coming years, he notes.

The exceptional melting event Greenland experienced in July was brought about by "a couple of days where the temperature was a couple of degrees above normal," says Stef Lhermitte, a remote sensing analyst at the Royal Netherlands Meteorological Institute in De Bilt. Nevertheless, he notes, Box and his colleagues "make a strong point that the whole of Greenland is getting darker." That trend, plus changes in climate that boost average summertime temperatures, increase the probability of widespread melting in the future. "I don’t think it will take another 150 years to have another such event," he says.

Arctic sea ice set to hit record low
[link to www.bbc.co.uk]

Scientists at the US National Snow and Ice Data Center said data showed that the sea ice extent was tracking below the previous record low, set in 2007.

Latest figures show that on 13 August ice extent was 483,000 sq km (186,000 sq miles) below the previous record low for the same date five years ago.

The ice is expected to continue melting until mid- to late September..

"The previous [Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change] report (published in 2007) stated that the likely date for an ice-free Arctic in the summer - and definitions for this vary a bit - was 2100," he explained.

"When we had the 2007 minimum, that date was brought forward to 2030-2040..

Arctic sea ice plays a key role in help keep polar regions cool and helps control the global climate system.

As the ice has a bright surface, it reflects about 80% of the sunlight that hits it back into space.

When the sea ice melts, it exposes more of the dark ocean surface, resulting in 90% of the sunlight being absorbed, which warms the Arctic ocean.
