i think what is happening is small pockets of magma are bursting up, reacting with the ice, throwing up these dark clouds, then it all stops again. it must be bursting at the seams with magma
all speculation of course, but imho, they were NOT clouds. clouds that are shone on directly by the sun are not as black as that
