This is the same area as the 6 August eruption... According to witnesses, the mountain silently blasted ash and gas 2 km into the sky from Te Maari crater, on the western side of the mountain. The difference between this eruption and the last one is there is no volcanic rocks coming out. The Tongariro Alpine Crossing has been closed and it seems the 50 or so people on the track at the moment of the eruption are safe.
