Activity at Stromboli volcano in Italy has been at exceptionally high levels recently. We observed several active vents inside the crater terrace with near-continuous lava spattering and strombolian explosion at intervals of 10-30 minutes. The northeastern vent in particular has very powerful and bright explosions of very liquid lava, with ejections into all directions reaching several hundred meters in height. These explosions are accompanied by loud detonations that rattle doors and windows in the village.

Just before the end of last near, a new earthquake swarm started on 31 Dec at El Hierro island. Most quakes are located at 15-20 km depth under the El Golfo bay and seem to propagate slowly towards the east. On 31 Dec, 57 quakes of magnitudes 1.4-2.4 were registered, on 1 Jan, 43 with magnitudes up to 2.6. You can see the complete list of quakes at the El Hierro Earthquakes page.

Just after the eruptive phase of Kizimen volcano in Kamchatka was thought to be over and aviation alert set back to green on 27 Dec, a new lava flow extrusion was observed on 28 Dec 2012.

KVERT reports continuing strong tremor and effusion of lava flows from the southern fissure of Plosky Tolbachik volcano.

Sheveluch volcano is active as well and keeps growing its lava dome. A small pyroclastic flow was triggered by a small dome collapse on 31 Dec.

Observed incandescence at the summit suggests that mild strombolian activity continues within the crater of Klyuchevskoi volcano.

Seismic activity of Gorely volcano remains moderately elevated and KVERT reports volcanic tremor under the volcano. No thermal anomaly is visible on satellite images.

Sakurajima volcano in Japan started the new year with at least 4 explosions, producing ash plumes up to 10,000 ft (3 km) altitude during 1-2 Jan.

A hot spot is visible at Karangetang volcano on Api Siau island, Indonesia. No ash emissions have been observed, but it is likely that the volcano has started to produce some minor activity at the summit dome.

Thermal anomalies are still visible from Paluweh north off Flores and suggest that dome growth and pyroclastic flow activity continue, although no recent ash plumes have been observed (most likely because of dense cloud cover).

A new strong ash eruption occurred today at 06:58 local time Lokon volcano in North Sulawesi. The explosion produced an ash plume rising 3.5 km as local media reported.

A SO2 plume was visible from Ulawun volcano in Papua New Guinea on 31 Dec, suggesting perhaps renewed activity there.

Kilauea volcano on Hawai'i has remained stable. The active lava lake at the summit in Halema'uma'u crater and several vents inside Pu’u O’o crater on the east rift zone are active. Lava flows from the latter are reaching the coastal plain and enter the sea at several locations along a 1 km wide area.

Popocatépetl volcano in Mexico continues to produce on average 1-2 small steam-, gas- and sometimes ash emissions per hour. Glow from the crater shows magma continues to slowly rise within the volcano.

No recent ash emissions have been observed at San Cristobal volcano in Nicaragua, but some volcanic tremor still indicates fluid movements inside the volcano.

Activity at Fuego volcano has remained characterized by few small strombolian explosions (8 counted during 31 Dec-1 Jan) producing small ash plumes up to about 4-500 m high, and the continuing lava flow, 500 m long on the upper southern slope.

The Santiaguito lava dome has remained mainly effusive, with very few and weak ash explosions, and active block lava flows from the dome, that generate constant small avalanches.

In Ecuador, activity at Tungurahua volcano has calmed down, but occasional explosions still occur, sometimes accompanied by loud bangs and shock waves such as on 17:53 local time on 31 Dec.

Seismic activity from Reventador volcano is at moderate levels with pulses of tremor suggesting ongoing emissions of gas and possibly ash. During times of clear weather, strong steaming could be observed.

Copahue volcano in Chile/ Argentina produces a steam and ash plume rising a few 100 m and sometimes visible on satellite images as well, but no recent explosions were reported.

Volcanic quakes and a slightly increased tremor signal are visible at Ruapehu volcano in New Zealand.

Continuous volcanic tremor at White Island, reflecting fluid movements beneath the volcano, continued to show a vaguely increasing trend although it has decreased again during the past days. [link to www.volcanodiscovery.com]

A new submarine volcanic eruption might have recently started off Turkey's west coast in the Marmaris Sea between the mainland and the Greek Island of Simi near Rhodes. Scientists from Istanbul's Technical University announced that they have found evidence of 2 active vents at about 200 m water depth along a north-south trending fissure of 2.5-3 km length. According to local newspapers, a rise in sea temperature was detected which suggests that lava might be erupting from the vents. According to Prof. Ahmet Ercan, it might take 1-3, or 20 years for the volcano to surface if at all. The area is located at the eastern end of the volcanically active Hellenic Arc and volcanic activity here would not be a huge surprise, in fact. Possibly preceding the eruption, as magma was rising through the crust, the area was affected by a series of seismic swarms during the past months. According to the scientists, a previous submarine eruption already occurred here in 2009.

4.6 magnitude earthquake strikes Sicily

January 4, 2013 – SICILY, Italy – Earthquakes in Italy today: Sicily, Marche, Lazio, Umbria, Calabria and Basilicata regions affected. Today, the INGV has recorded four earthquakes in Italy that have affected districts seismic Gulf of Patti and Milazzo (magnitude 2.4), the Lipari Islands (magnitude 2.4 and 2.3) and Monti Reatini (magnitude 2). Affected the provinces of Messina, Rieti, Italy, Ascoli Piceno and Perugia. Yesterday, including those not yet reported, were recorded in the districts seismic shock of the Sea of Sicily (magnitude 2.9), the Lipari Islands (magnitude 2.7), the island of Ustica (magnitude 2.4) and Pollino (magnitude 2.1). Affected the provinces of Messina, Palermo, Cosenza and Power. A shallow 4.6 (USGS) magnitude earthquake also struck Sicily at a depth of 9.2 km (5.7 miles). The epicenter of the earthquake was 5 km (3 miles) from Maniace, 52 km (32 miles) NNW (332°) from Catania, Sicily, Italy and 72 km (45 miles) from Messina. The earthquake was felt by the population in the provinces of Messina and Catania, the town next to the epicenter are the municipalities of San Teodoro, Cesarò and Maniace. “No ticking timebomb” in Icelandic volcanoes – we know so – right? Hello Laki!
Do not know if any here know of two PBS shows aired yesterday night, one on doomsday volcanoes in Iceland, the other one a little less “doom”. “There is none” (timebomb) says Prof. Páll Einarssson in this mbl.is interview, “but Hekla continues to expand, leading to eruption, Katla is still restless”.. etc. – my translation – further online-translator needed for full article.
Professor Páll is an expert. Better listen when he speaks out (?)
- Maybe this sums up the Volcanic situation here – Nothing special is going on – nevertheless “DV”, Völvuspá, in printed paper edition 28.12.2012, Page 4, has “forecest” no fewer than three eruptions in next year, in Iceland, 2013 : One small at/near Askja, north of Vatnajökull, in late spring, one (or only a half) in Mýrdalsjökull in early summer, with large mudflow into Markarfljót that damages the new harbour at Landeyjahöfn – possibly coming from north of Emstrur? It does not say. This I have waited for since forecast last year, by another “Valva”, so kind of re-used, and finaly an “Plinian” large one in …. Öræfajökull, in late summer / autum this yearm that lasts a long time, into winter. Wise to sell off Airliner stocks it this goes as “predicted”, if trading across the Atlantic…. Ok. An Explanation: “Valva” is a (Lady) person that look in her magic crystal ball, but often taken quite seriously here, many of them are printed in late year or early year editions. I totally belive in all they said (not)… of sorts. The weather forcast is more accurate each day.

Global potential threat here I think probably the maximum, more than anywhere else. Though of course - if we consider the one taken separately are not large eruption, because of Iceland's small population compared to other places someone can talks about as in VC. on a related note, I have had two dreams, on two successive nights, last 2 nights, about Katla.

it's gonna blow, and blow big too. had the sense in the dream everyone on the island is in serious danger.

first dream was me looking over a map of Katla, and especially the north of it for some reason..

last night's dream, I was on the island, and it had blown, and people knew they were about to die. A massive dark cloud was heading for where I was in the dream. Weirdly people were talking about what effects the hot ash would have on the body. I was like, 'OK, ffs!' in the dream.

That might be true but is partly because Iceland has so many eruptions. Most are small but that does not mean they don't have huge ones too. In terms of lava emitted the biggest eruption in historic times has been in Iceland. Recent studies have shown that a once in every hundred years or so eruption in Iceland could kill an estimated 250000 people in Europe alone. Many 1000's have been killed in Britain alone due to poisoning, as well as famine and extreme cold as far away as Africa, from Islandic volcanoes. Scientists are particularly concerned about Katla because an eruption being so overdue suggests that a massive eruption could eventually occur. The Islandic President has already stated that Katla is likely to go next and with potentially devastating affects on the world.

As already stated there have been several new documentaries and public preparedness programs released in the last few weeks.

Strange isn't it. Although it must be remembered that Iceland would ideally have significantly more monitoring devices and equipment given the complexity of the region but the geology makes this very difficult. This means that almost anything can happen at any time with sometimes little or no warning until an event actually takes place. There is much that is still to be learnt from Iceland and we almost know very little at all and even what we think we may know is often very controversial amongst different scientists! Sometimes only history can give us clues to what may happen next but what scientific knowledge can we gain from something that say happened 200 years ago which is barely a heartbeat in the bigger picture of time.

Could be just the strong winds, 60 mph in places but wind speed has dropped for the time being.
