Eruption History of Paluweh volcano

Posted on February 4, 2013 by John Seach

The current eruption of Paluweh volcano, Indonesia highlights the potential dangers of the volcano from past activity.
The following in a summary of eruption history of Paluweh volcano.

2012-13 Eruption
An increase in volcanic earthquakes were recorded at the volcano in January 2012. The alert status was increased to level 2 (out of a maximum 4). The alert status of Paluweh volcano was raised to level 2 for the second time in 2012 on 8th October. A lava dome began growing in the crater in November 2012, accompanied by ash emissions.
A high level eruption occurred at Palwueh volcano, Indonesia on 3 February 2013. Ash emissions were reported to an altitude of 45,000 ft, extending 175 nautical miles south. Satellite images showed a hotspot over the volcano on 28 and 31 January 2013.

1984-85 Eruptions
Explosive eruptions at Paluweh volcano during 1984 and 1985 occurred on the west side of the lava dome.

1980-81 Eruptions
Eruptions began in November 1980 and continued intermittently to the end of January 1981. A new 40 m-diameter vent was formed in early November, located on the upper NNE flank. On 18th January renewed activity occurred at Paluweh. A hot air wave was felt by the inhabitants of two E-flank villages. About 1850 people were evacuated from the danger zone. On 31st January explosions were heard at Kota Baru, Flores Island. New eruptions occurred on 22nd August 1981. Lava and burning rocks were repeatedly erupted, and water temperatures reached 98 deg C at some places around the island. Crops and fishing boats were damaged and people were evacuated. After residents evacuated, pyroclastic flows burnt 36 buildings.

1973 Eruption
In January 1973 an eruption of Paluweh ejected ash and bombs to a height of 100 m. A large amount of vegetation was destroyed. There were about 2000 people living on the island.

1972-73 Eruption
Explosive eruptions occurred between 16th October 1972 and January 1973.

1963-66 Eruptions
An explosive eruption in between 1963 and 1966 produced pyroclastic flows, lava flows, lava dome growth, and fatalities.

1928 Eruption and Tsunami
On 4th August 1928 a violent eruption occurred at the volcano. Landslides created three waves, 5 to 10 m high, which killed at least 160 people. The eruption has been described as one of the largest eruptions between that of Novarupta (1912) and Agung (1963). The eruption of Paluweh volcano had effects on global climate, and produced a short cooling period in 1929.

Supervolcano Campi Flegrei, Italy [link to hisz.rsoe.hu]
The ground of the Campi Flegrei ("burning fields"), also known as the Phlegraean Fields, has risen more in recent weeks than it has in a long time. This does not necessary indicate a heightened risk of an eruption, however, says Thomas Wiersberg, a scientific drilling expert for the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) in Potsdam...
..."Many houses cracked," after which the ground deformation sharply subsided, Wiersberg said. "But it's true that the uplift has increased again during the past two or three months." An eruption could have serious consequences for the heavily populated region with knock-on effects for the whole of Europe. There could also be worldwide impact, for example in the form of climatic changes. No forecasts have been made thus far. Since super volcanoes seldom undergo massive eruptions, empirical data is lacking. "It's easy to assert there'll be an eruption sometime. That doesn't help us, though. We need more specific information," Wiersberg said. He said the drilling project aimed in part to monitor the Phlegraean Fields over the long term and gain more knowledge of what had occurred earlier in the super volcano. "First we've got to understand what's happening under the surface," Wiersberg said. Then it may be possible to say more about the likelihood of an eruption.
Fears of nearby residents - and some scientists - that the drilling could "awaken" the super volcano have proved to be unfounded. "Technically, everything went smoothly. No additional volcanic activities were triggered, nor were there any problems with gases or fluids," he noted. It has not yet been decided when the scientists will continue their project and begin drilling to a depth of 3 kilometres. "At the moment it's mainly a financial question," Wiersberg said. "There'll be deep drilling when Italy provides the necessary funds."

Campi Flegrei
[link to www.volcano.si.edu]
Campi Flegrei is a large 13-km-wide caldera on the outskirts of Naples that contains numerous phreatic tuff rings and pyroclastic cones. The caldera margins are poorly defined and on the south lie beneath the Gulf of Pozzuoli. Episodes of dramatic uplift and subsidence within the dominantly trachytic caldera have occurred since Roman times. The earliest known eruptive products are dated 47,000 years before present (BP)...

Campi Flegrei del Mar di Sicilia (Phlegraean Fields of the Sicily Sea) is composed of a group of submarine volcanoes SW of Sicily. The volcanoes were constructed within a submarine depression about 1000 m deep in the Strait of Sicily between the SW coast of Sicily and the NE tip of Tunisia, forming submarine banks that are capped by cones that rise to near sea level...

with famous Empedocle volcano system (from this thread):

this is also very interesting region. Add to it continuation of Campi Flegrei to south and you found there no less, and possible even more dangerous Empedocle volcano

Empedocles is a large underwater volcano located 40 km off the southern coast of Sicily named after the Greek philosopher Empedocles who believed that everything on Earth was made up of the four elements.
According to Giovanni Lanzafame, of Italy's National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology, the volcanic structure is around 400 meters high, with a base 30 km long and 25 km wide.

From 17 to 21 July of the previous (now past) year INGV made with a high resolution geophysical survey of the volcano with the scientific ship Astrea, which in particular has allowed him to establish the presence of monogenic nine craters on top of one of which is the island Ferdinandea

Re: The monsters wakes up ! Katla Hekla Iceland Dead Zone and rift as uniform system ! A lot of others worldwide !
February 5, 2013 – NAPLES, ITALY – A restive supervolcano west of Naples is raising nervousness in the local Italian population. The ground of the Campi Flegrei “burning fields,” also known as the Phlegraean Fields, has risen more in recent weeks than it has in a long time. This does not necessary indicate a heightened risk of an eruption, however, said Thomas Wiersberg, a scientific drilling expert for the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) in Potsdam. The Phlegraean Fields are a large caldera, or volcanic crater, lying mostly underwater off the Italian coast. The caldera is thought to have been formed by a massive eruption some 35,000 to 40,000 years ago. The last major eruption in the fields of boiling mud and sulphurous steam holes, one of a few dozen super volcanoes worldwide, occurred in 1538. Wiersberg is part of an international research team that began drilling into the ground not far from the caldera last summer to monitor possible early warning signs of an eruption. The team has drilled a pilot hole to a depth of 500 meters but no data has been gathered yet, Wiersberg said in an interview with dpa. Italy’s Department of Civil Protection recently raised the alert level for the Phlegraean Fields, where Wiersberg said the ground was rising by about three centimeters a month. There are concerns that a magma chamber under the fields, presumably connected to the one under Mount Vesuvius, east of Naples, is filling up, the rising pressure possibly heightening the danger of an eruption. As Wiersberg pointed out, however, the two episodes of considerable ground uplift since the 1960s were not followed by an eruption. The uplift in the early 1970s, about 1.50 meters in three years, was somewhat greater than the current one, he said. “Many houses cracked,” after which the ground deformation sharply subsided, Wiersberg said. “But it’s true that the uplift has increased again during the past two or three months.” An eruption could have serious consequences for the heavily populated region with knock-on effects for the whole of Europe. There could also be worldwide impact, for example in the form of climatic changes. No forecasts have been made thus far. Since super volcanoes seldom undergo massive eruptions, empirical data is lacking. “It’s easy to assert there’ll be an eruption sometime. That doesn’t help us, though. We need more specific information,” Wiersberg said. He said the drilling project aimed in part to monitor the Phlegraean Fields over the long term and gain more knowledge of what had occurred earlier in the super volcano. “First we’ve got to understand what’s happening under the surface,” Wiersberg said. Then it may be possible to say more about the likelihood of an eruption. Fears of nearby residents, and some scientists, that the drilling could “awaken” the super volcano have proved to be unfounded. “Technically, everything went smoothly. No additional volcanic activities were triggered, nor were there any problems with gases or fluids,” he noted. It has not yet been decided when the scientists will continue their project and begin drilling to a depth of 3km. “At the moment it’s mainly a financial question,” Wiersberg said. –News 24 [link to theextinctionprotocol.wordpress.com]

Re: The monsters wakes up ! Katla Hekla Iceland Dead Zone and rift as uniform system ! A lot of others worldwide !
...Some of those signs are readily apparent, like La Solfatara, the fumarole field near Pozzuoli, or the famed Roman columns that show evidence of seawater inundation in the past — a record of the rising and falling of the land surface along the Bay of Pozzuoli. INGV keeps a close eye on the activity at Campi Flegrei, monitoring things like seismicity, land surface deformation, hydrothermal vent temperatures and gas chemistry. Right now, Campi Flegrei is about as closely watched as any volcano on Earth! So, when rapid changes begin to occur, we know about it quickly.

Since late 2012 into 2013, there have been some interesting changes in the activity at the Campi Flegrei. A recent bulletin (in Italian) put out by the Osservatorio Vesuviano (watching over Campi Flegrei, Vesuvius and Ischia) tackles some of the changes in deformation that has been occurring. First, a little context: since the mid-1980s, the caldera surface had been slowly subsiding (see left). However, for a period of a few years in the early 1980s, there was rapid uplift within the caldera — upwards of 2 meters in only three years between 1982-85. There was concern that the Campi Flegrei might have been headed for an eruption, as along with this uplift came earthquake swarms … but, nothing happened. Likely, a new slug of magma intruded* at depth under the Campi Flegrei, but it didn’t lead to any eruption.

Now, since early 2012, parts of the caldera around Pozzuoli have been rising quite impressively, on the order of 70 mm (0.07 meters) in a little over a year. That isn’t anywhere near the rates of uplift from the early 1980s, but it is still notable. It seems that multiple GPS stations are showing a radial uplift centered in the caldera, all suggesting that the floor of the caldera is bulging upwards since early 2012. There have also been swarms of earthquakes during the past year and a half, mostly centered under the northern shores of the Bay of Pozzuoli at depths of 1-4 kilometers (see below left). Some of the other parameters watched at Campi Flegrei have changed as well — temperatures at the fumaroles have increased 10-15°C since 2003, the composition of gases released in the caldera have also become more “magmatic”, which higher carbon dioxide/water since 2000.

What does this all mean? Well, [speculation alert!], there are likely a few potential culprits. First, this could merely be the continuation of the intrusion of magma that started in the 1980s. Now, with all the deflation from 1985-2000, that might not be too likely. This could be merely changes in the hydrothermal system, but the change in the composition of gases being released suggest magma is involved. This could also be a new intrusion of magma under the caldera at depths of ~5 km (based on the earthquakes) — combine that with the surface uplift (to accommodate new magma), the gas compositions and warming fumaroles, and it seems like a good hypothesis. Now, before everyone goes running to the hills, remember, the last intrusion during the 1980s was much more dramatic and it didn’t lead to any eruption. So, there is a very high likelihood that this intrusion isn’t going to lead to any new eruption.

Kinda interesting. Line of sight meter measuring inflation and deflation at Hekla measured in Micro-radians. Last measurment was 2007, so today, if inflation has continued at this rate, the measurment should be about 11 micro-rads. Almost twice of what it was when she erupted in 2000. I’m thinking she needs to go soon.

Thread: That's not ice in Iceland...they are masses of dead herring

"Thousands of tons of herring died in the fjord Kolgrafafjordur, Snaefellsnes Peninsula, Iceland in the beginning of February 2013. Only recently, some 30,000 tons died at the same site on December 13th 2012 because of oxygen deprivation. ''

hmm, so I goes back and looks at the charts..

look at the 13th of December. SMACK in the middle of that area of no data, and now the fish kill is happening again, as the charts seem to be showing a definite uptick.

interesting.

An interesting graphic: [link to volcanoes.usgs.gov] Note - the largest Yellowstone eruption is estimated to have produced something like 600 cubic miles of material. The Siberian Traps are thought to have produced something like 250,000 to 1,000,000 cubic miles of material. But both of these are dwarfed by the surely globe-changing eruptions at the Ontong Java Plateau, which is though to have spewed out some 24,000,000 cubic miles of material... producing a landmass the size of Alaska. [link to publications.iodp.org] To summarize: Mt. St. Helens: 0.24 cubic miles Yellowstone: 600 cubic miles Siberian Traps: ; 250,000 cubic miles Ontong Java–Manihiki–Hikurangi igneous province: 24,000,000 cubic miles

hf Thanks! It was really very useful article by Erik Klemetti, I red it.

The earliest known eruptive products are dated 47,000 years before present (BP)...

and close to south
Campi Flegrei Mar Sicilia
[link to www.volcano.si.edu]
Campi Flegrei del Mar di Sicilia (Phlegraean Fields of the Sicily Sea) is composed of a group of submarine volcanoes SW of Sicily. The volcanoes were constructed within a submarine depression about 1000 m deep in the Strait of Sicily between the SW coast of Sicily and the NE tip of Tunisia, forming submarine banks that are capped by cones that rise to near sea level...

with famous Empedocle volcano system (from this thread):

this is also very interesting region. Add to it continuation of Campi Flegrei to south and you found there no less, and possible even more dangerous Empedocle volcano
with also clear signs of awakening

[link to en.wikipedia.org]

319. MrMixon08:10 PM GMT em 05 de Fevereiro de 2013 Quoting MrMixon I've often wondered if the Deccan Traps and the Chicxulub impact in the Yucatan are related. Specifically, I've wondered if the Chicxulub impact could've caused antipodal focusing of seismic waves on the opposite side of the globe, causing enough disturbance to trigger an eruption in the Deccan Traps area. [link to www.princeton.edu] However, it looks like some folks examined this question in this paper [link to palaeoblog.blogspot.com] [link to gji.oxfordjournals.org] and they concluded the impact did not have enough force to cause the eruption of the Deccan Traps. Plus, the two locations aren't technically across the globe from eachother (both being in the Northern Hemisphere). Still, the timing of the two seems beyond coincidental. Even if the force of the Chicxulub impact wasn't enough to cause the Deccan Trap eruptions outright, I still wonder if the impact could've knocked loose a system that was already near the bursting point...
