Volcanic aerosols, not pollutants, tamped down recent Earth warming, study says

A team led by the University of Colorado Boulder looking for clues about why Earth did not warm as much as scientists expected between 2000 and 2010 now thinks the culprits are hiding in plain sight—dozens of volcanoes spewing sulfur dioxide.

...The new project was undertaken in part to resolve conflicting results of two recent studies on the origins of the sulfur dioxide in the stratosphere, including a 2009 study led by the late David Hoffman of NOAA indicating aerosol increases in the stratosphere may have come from rising emissions of sulfur dioxide from India and China. In contrast, a 2011 study led by Vernier—who also provided essential observation data for the new GRL study—showed moderate volcanic eruptions play a role in increasing particulates in the stratosphere, Neely said. The new GRL study also builds on a 2011 study led by Solomon showing stratospheric aerosols offset about a quarter of the greenhouse effect warming on Earth during the past decade, said Neely, also a postdoctoral fellow in NCAR's Advanced Study Program. The new study relies on long-term measurements of changes in the stratospheric aerosol layer's "optical depth," which is a measure of transparency, said Neely. Since 2000, the optical depth in the stratospheric aerosol layer has increased by about 4 to 7 percent, meaning it is slightly more opaque now than in previous years.
"The biggest implication here is that scientists need to pay more attention to small and moderate volcanic eruptions when trying to understand changes in Earth's climate," said Toon of CU-Boulder's Department of Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences. "But overall these eruptions are not going to counter the greenhouse effect. Emissions of volcanic gases go up and down, helping to cool or heat the planet, while greenhouse gas emissions from human activity just continue to go up."...

While small and moderate volcanoes mask some of the human-caused warming of the planet, larger volcanoes can have a much bigger effect, said Toon. When Mount Pinatubo in the Philippines erupted in 1991, it emitted millions of tons of sulfur dioxide into the atmosphere that cooled the Earth slightly for the next several years.

Swarm seismicity continues at a reduced pace (though with larger magnitude events) at Mammoth Mountain volcano (CA) (station MRD). If you note, most of the earthquakes at the volcano occurred in two strong bursts of spasmodic tremor at 13:22 and 21:53 UTC yesterday. Responses by nearby dilatometers to the shallow activity (event depths around 3-5 km) have been surprisingly modest.
A solitary magnitude M1.6 earthquake struck beneath the eastern flank of Mount Shasta volcano (station LGB)

late yesterday. I only mention this because of the increase in seismic activity along the Eastern Sierran Front over the past few weeks,…and that Mount Shasta (my favorite volcano!) doesn’t get near the publicity that it should!

Arctic thaw may be first in cascade of tipping points

...
These two tipping points – the Arctic sea ice and permafrost – are the first two in a network of points outlined recently by Lenton and Levermann (see diagram). The pair argue that periods of rapid ice loss in the Arctic change regional weather patterns, to warm Asia more quickly and speed up the thaw.
[link to www.newscientist.com]
"No climate model has ever induced the tipping of one by tipping another," cautions Levermann. But he says that could be a quirk of the models, which climate modellers build to study aspects of climate that don't involve tipping points. "We observe more violent changes in the past than our models are capable of simulating," agrees Ditlevsen. "That points to the idea of dominoes."...
In Lenton and Levermann's cascade, a critical point appears to be the shutdown of the Atlantic thermohaline circulation. This vast current pumps water around all the Earth's oceans, and interacts with many of the other areas susceptible to tipping points, including the Greenland and Antarctic ice. The good news is that this tipping point could act as a safety valve, slowing the progress of the others...
Perhaps the worst news of all is that there may be no warning of impending flips. Lenton has developed tipping point forecasts that look for warning signs. Historical records and chaos theory applied to ecosystem models suggest that as a system nears a threshold, it will struggle to bounce back from small disturbances. So if a system is approaching a tipping point, its response to extreme events should become more sluggish. The trouble is that the one tipping point we have already passed, according to Lenton – melting of the Arctic sea ice – gave us no such warning signs. Ditlevsen is not surprised. He found that there was no warning before similar events during the last ice age either (Geophysical Research Letters, doi.org/fd7vkj). Both researchers say the behaviour of other unstable systems, like the Amazon rainforest, glaciers and monsoons, may be more predictable.
...
Trashing Siberia
A mere 1.5 °C of warming may be enough to start the widespread thaw of Siberia's vast permafrost (see main story). We are already committed to 1.1 °C. What are the consequences?
The greatest concern, says Tim Lenton of the University of Exeter in the UK, is the regional landscape. Buildings and infrastructure are often built on hard permafrost, and will start to subside. "Ice roads won't exist any more," he says.
The increasingly soggy permafrost will also threaten the pipelines that transport Russian gas to Europe. "The maintenance and upkeep of that infrastructure is going to cost a lot more," says Ted Schuur of the University of Florida in Gainesville.
A study published last year predicted that the Russian cities of Nadym, Yakutsk and Salekhard would be worst affected. The amount of weight the ground underneath could support could fall 20 per cent or more (Arctic, Antarctic and Alpine Research, doi.org/kkz). The ecosystem will also change as plants move north.
The thawing permafrost will also release methane and carbon dioxide, which will warm the planet still further. Though Lenton says the effect will be small compared to humanity's emissions from burning fossil fuels.

Understanding extreme weather in an era of climate change
Scientists try to ID climate signals in weather as public draws conclusions.

The US has clearly seen some pretty extreme weather events over the last year. These events have caused both billions of dollars in property damage and endless arguments over how much can be attributed to climate change. Even as scientists work on the problem of attribution, the public has often made up its mind on what's to blame.

To try to bring some sanity to the discussion, the meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science hosted a session on US weather extremes. Although there were a variety of talks, three presentations nicely captured the challenges: one on the state of the US climate, another on a recent climate event, and a third on trying to convey all of this to the public.

Turning up the heat
The first speaker was Donald Wuebbles of the University of Illinois. He started out by saying that you can view the climate as a bell curve, with extreme heat and cold events occurring where it starts to flatten out to the left and right. In that view, changing the climate could do any of three things. The curve itself could shift, with hot events becoming more common and cold events becoming less frequent. You could also potentially flatten the curve, with the typical climate remaining roughly the same but the instances of extreme events increased. Or, he said, you could do both.
Depending on which aspect of the climate system you're looking at, you may get any one of these options....

Heubbles also mentioned a variety of events that have been specifically attributed to climate change, including the recent drought in Texas, which analysts have suggested was made anywhere between two and twenty times more likely by climate change. This fact served as a great bridge to the next speaker, John Nielsen-Gammon, a Texas state climatologist.

Running hot
Record high temperatures are becoming much more common, even as record lows are decreasing in frequency.
[link to www.c2es.org]
...
"Saying the drought was due to climate change is like saying the airplane crashed due to gravity," Nielsen-Gammon said.

<i would like add : same for cold > tounge

It's true, but it doesn't tell you much. So, his team used climate models to try to understand the causes of the drought...

Managing complexity
If Nielsen-Gammon's job was complicated by the mix of natural variation and climate-driven events, then Andrew Freedman has an even greater challenge: accurately conveying it to the public...

To try to get accurate information to the public, Climate Central is working with TV meteorologists, who already reach the public but don't always have the tools to handle the complexities well. And the emphasis is on getting them to ask better questions—instead of "did global warming cause this?", they should focus on questions that are more relevant and can be answered, like "how did it [climate change] influence the odds for or severity of this event?"...

<seems like Joe Bastardi too stubborn to understand such things tounge>

...This certainly won't guarantee that we'll end up with a public that can easily grasp the complexities of climate. But it could help them to start recognizing that the complexities exist.

More volcano ash in the ash cloud from Eyjafjallajökull volcano according to a new study
Posted on February 25, 2013 by Jón Frímann
According to an new study into the Eyjafjallajökull volcano ash cloud. It appears that more volcano ash was up in the air then originally estimated. The estimation now is that the amount of volcano ash was around 100 times more then expected during the eruption. This has serious implications to air travel in the future if there is a repeat of the Eyjafjallajökull volcano eruption scenario. But most of Eyjafjallajökull volcano ash was small and fine volcano ash that did stay long time up in the air.

This is the conclusion in a study that was made by Mark Woodhouse (and more people) and is published in Journal of Geophysical Research. Sadly I do not have access to this study (I am too poor to do so). So I an only repeat what the Rúv News is saying about this study.

Earthquake swarm east of Grímsey (TFZ) and in Grímsfjall volcano fissure swarm
Posted on February 28, 2013 by Jón Frímann
Currently there is a minor earthquake swarm east of Grímsey Island in the Tjörnes Fracture Zone. So far the largest earthquake has had the magnitude of 2.9 according to Icelandic Meteorological Office reviewed earthquake overview. Earthquake swarms are common in this area of TFZ.

Earthquake activity in TFZ today. Copyright of this image belongs to Icelandic Meteorological Office.

Grímsfjall and Hamarinn volcanoes

Some internesting earthquake activity is now taking place in Grímsfjall volcano (outside the main volcano). This earthquake activity is in the fissure swarm that extents away from Grímsfjall volcano in the direction of Katla volcano fissure swarm. There has also been interesting earthquake activity taking place in Hamarinn volcano (no GVP page). But Hamarinn volcano last had a minor eruption in July of the year 2011. So far nothing suggests anything of volcanic nature is about to take place.

At the moment it appears that nothing besides earthquakes is going to take place in Grímsfjall volcano. But it hard to be sure given how often Grímsfjall volcano erupts. I do not yet have enough data on what is happening in Hamarinn volcano to say what is taking place there. So for now. It must just be observed.

An extreme wind erosion event of the fresh Eyjafjallajokull 2010 volcanic ash

...The Eyjafjallajokull volcano in Iceland erupted Mars - May 2010 with an ash plume reaching 3–10 km height21, 22, 23. The eruption produced about 0.27 km3 of tephra with about ½ being deposited on Iceland23. The tephra was relatively fine, with a high proportion of 0.25–1 mm ash at 10 km from the crater23. The ash was commonly 1–15 cm thick at 5–20 km downwind from the volcano during the main ash deposition episodes23. This deposition caused severe damage to areas with sparse vegetation, while more resistant systems, such as woodlands, stabilised the ash without causing permanent damage. Dust storms were frequent in the years following the eruption. We monitored wind erosion the first seasons after the eruption employing collectors and automatic sensors in an area that received 2–5 cm tephra, about 12 km SE of the crater (Figure 1) (see Methods for site selection and characteristics). The purpose of the research was to quantify wind erosion of freshly deposited ash under field conditions. Such measurements are fundamental for understanding the remobilisation of volcanic ash by wind, dust production of such areas, the large scale ecosystem destruction, and for predicting negative impacts of volcanic ash deposition on ecosystems and society...

Supervolcano Campi Flegrei, Italy [link to hisz.rsoe.hu]
The ground of the Campi Flegrei ("burning fields"), also known as the Phlegraean Fields, has risen more in recent weeks than it has in a long time. This does not necessary indicate a heightened risk of an eruption, however, says Thomas Wiersberg, a scientific drilling expert for the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) in Potsdam...
..."Many houses cracked," after which the ground deformation sharply subsided, Wiersberg said. "But it's true that the uplift has increased again during the past two or three months." An eruption could have serious consequences for the heavily populated region with knock-on effects for the whole of Europe. There could also be worldwide impact, for example in the form of climatic changes. No forecasts have been made thus far. Since super volcanoes seldom undergo massive eruptions, empirical data is lacking. "It's easy to assert there'll be an eruption sometime. That doesn't help us, though. We need more specific information," Wiersberg said. He said the drilling project aimed in part to monitor the Phlegraean Fields over the long term and gain more knowledge of what had occurred earlier in the super volcano. "First we've got to understand what's happening under the surface," Wiersberg said. Then it may be possible to say more about the likelihood of an eruption.
Fears of nearby residents - and some scientists - that the drilling could "awaken" the super volcano have proved to be unfounded. "Technically, everything went smoothly. No additional volcanic activities were triggered, nor were there any problems with gases or fluids," he noted. It has not yet been decided when the scientists will continue their project and begin drilling to a depth of 3 kilometres. "At the moment it's mainly a financial question," Wiersberg said. "There'll be deep drilling when Italy provides the necessary funds."

Campi Flegrei

Campi Flegrei is a large 13-km-wide caldera on the outskirts of Naples that contains numerous phreatic tuff rings and pyroclastic cones. The caldera margins are poorly defined and on the south lie beneath the Gulf of Pozzuoli. Episodes of dramatic uplift and subsidence within the dominantly trachytic caldera have occurred since Roman times. The earliest known eruptive products are dated 47,000 years before present (BP)...

Campi Flegrei Mar Sicilia
[link to www.volcano.si.edu]
Campi Flegrei del Mar di Sicilia (Phlegraean Fields of the Sicily Sea) is composed of a group of submarine volcanoes SW of Sicily. The volcanoes were constructed within a submarine depression about 1000 m deep in the Strait of Sicily between the SW coast of Sicily and the NE tip of Tunisia, forming submarine banks that are capped by cones that rise to near sea level...

with famous Empedocle volcano system (from this thread):

this is also very interesting region. Add to it continuation of Campi Flegrei to south and you found there no less, and possible even more dangerous Empedocle volcano
with also clear signs of awakening:
[link to en.wikipedia.org]
Empedocles is a large underwater volcano located 40 km off the southern coast of Sicily named after the Greek philosopher Empedocles who believed that everything on Earth was made up of the four elements.
According to Giovanni Lanzafame, of Italy's National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology, the volcanic structure is around 400 meters high, with a base 30 km long and 25 km wide.

From 17 to 21 July of the previous (now past) year INGV made with a high resolution geophysical survey of the volcano with the scientific ship Astrea, which in particular has allowed him to establish the presence of monogenic nine craters on top of one of which is the island Ferdinandea

Sakurajima Volcano is capable of powerful explosive activity which can result in the production of shock waves. In the past, windows have been broken by these shockwaves at distances of over 10km, such as in the nearby city of Kagoshima. During damp conditions, the passing shockwave causes brief condensation of water, making the shockwave visible. The video shows the same eruption two times using different optical lengths so both details and the passage of the shockwave over a wider area can be seen clearly.
