Mapping inflation at Santorini volcano, Greece, using GPS and InSAR

Abstract
Recent studies have indicated that for the first time since 1950, intense geophysical activity is occurring at the Santorini volcano. Here, we present and discuss the surface deformation associated with this activity, spanning from January 2011 to February 2012. Analysis of satellite interferometry data was performed using two well-established techniques, namely, Persistent Scatterer Interferometry (PSI) and Small Baseline Subset (SBAS), producing dense line-of-sight (LOS) ground deformation maps. The displacement field was compared with GPS observations from 10 continuous sites installed on Santorini. Results show a clear and large inflation signal, up to 150 mm/yr in the LOS direction, with a radial pattern outward from the center of the caldera. We model the deformation inferred from GPS and InSAR using a Mogi source located north of the Nea Kameni island, at a depth between 3.3 km and 6.3 km and with a volume change rate in the range of 12 million m3 to 24 million m3 per year. The latest InSAR and GPS data suggest that the intense geophysical activity has started to diminish since the end of February 2012.

The ability to monitor transient motion along faults is critical to improving our ability to understand many natural phenomena such as landslides and earthquakes. Here, we usedata from a GPS and seismometer network that were deployed to monitor the regularly repeating glacial earthquakes of Whillans Ice Stream, West Antarctica to show that a unique pattern of precursory slip precedes complete rupture along the bed of the ice stream. Additionally, we show that rupture can be independently tracked by increased levels of microseismic activity, including harmonic tremor, that are coincident with the onset of slip at any location, thus providing a remote means of monitoring stress and rupture propagation during the glacial earthquakes.

The effects of magma flux variations on the formation and lifetime of large silicic magma chambers

Abstract
Incremental emplacement of large silicic intrusions limits the size and lifetime of any magma chamber if earlier injected magma pulses solidify before the next pulse is emplaced. Geochronology indicates that long-term average magma fluxes of plutons are too low for the accumulation of magma volumes larger than a single pulse. To better constrain the formation of large-volume magma chambers, we investigate the influence of a changing emplacement rate of successive sill injections that form a composite intrusion in the upper crust. A thermal model with an explicit finite difference scheme simulates periods of transient high magma fluxes keeping the long-term average flux small. Several scenarios regarding how fluxes vary were analysed. A progressive increase in flux does not result in magma accumulation. Only a step-like flux increase of at least one order of magnitude above the background flux produces a large magma reservoir. To generate a magma chamber of a melt-crystal mix above solidus temperature with a volume of 500–2000 km3, transient high fluxes of at least 1.25 × 10−2 km3/a, equivalent to vertical, one-dimensional accretion rates of a few cm/a, are required. The transient high flux range where magma accumulates is largest for model scenarios with one period of transient high flux and therefore this emplacement style is favoured for the built-up of substantial magma chambers during pluton growth. Intrusion scenarios with three and four periods of transient high fluxes do not generate reservoirs of mobile magma but magma mushes can be present for some hundred thousand years.

Volcano deformation at active plate boundaries: Deep magma accumulation at Hekla volcano and plate boundary deformation in south Iceland

Most magmatic systems on Earth are located at actively deforming plate boundaries. In these systems, the magmatic and plate boundary deformation signals are intertwined and must be deconvolved to properly estimate magma flux and source characteristics of the magma plumbing system. We investigate the inter-rifting and inter-seismic deformation signals at the Eastern Volcanic Zone (EVZ) – South Iceland Seismic Zone (SISZ) ridge - transform intersection and estimate the location, depth, and volume rate for magmatic sources at Hekla and Torfajökull volcanoes, which are located at the intersection. We solve simultaneously for the source parameters of the tectonic and volcanic deformation signals using a new ten-year velocity field derived from a dense network of episodic and continuous GPS stations in south Iceland. We find the intersection of the axes of the EVZ and the SISZ is located within the Torfajökull caldera, which itself is subsiding. Deformation at Hekla is statistically best described in terms of a horizontal ellipsoidal magma chamber at 24−2+4 km depth aligned with the volcanic system and increasing in volume by 0.017−0.002+0.007 km3 per year. A spherical magma chamber centered at 24−2+5 km depth with a volume rate of 0.019−0.002+0.011 km3per year, or a vertical pipe-shaped magma chamber between 10−1+3 km and 21−4+7 km with a volume rate of 0.008−0.001+0.003 km3 per year are also plausible models explaining the deformation at Hekla. All three models indicate magma accumulation in the lower crust or near the Moho under Hekla.

"Strange phenomena at L del Maule" xD -- a brief interview with a geologist. One important thing he says is that LDM is an economically important zone, due of mining or drinking water deposits. Anyway he mentions that the more plausible scenario is a fissure eruption, if the inflation doesn't changes to deflation. And don't forget that the presence of water could increase the explosivity, if the hypothetic eruption is explosive.

The 10-km-wide island of Manam, lying 13 km off the northern coast of mainland Papua New Guinea, is one of the country's most active volcanoes. Four large radial valleys extend from the unvegetated summit of the conical 1807-m-high basaltic-andesitic stratovolcano to its lower flanks. These "avalanche valleys," regularly spaced 90 degrees apart, channel lava flows and pyroclastic avalanches that have sometimes reached the coast. Five small satellitic centers are located near the island's shoreline on the northern, southern and western sides. Two summit craters are present; both are active, although most historical eruptions have originated from the southern crater...

Dieng volcano was raised to level 2 alert (waspada) on March 11th 2013 due to the increase of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions in the Timbang crater area since Sunday. The concentration was recorded at a volume of 0.71 percent, higher than the safe level for human contact, which is 0.5 percent volume.

Dead cats, birds and rabbits have been found near the crater. Residents are advised to be cautious if digging more than one metre into the ground due to the potential of gas...
