here and in another threads repeatedly written about the strange vibrations, occasionally observed on established there seismometers. now some of them can be explained.

...The reason the seismic sensors were detecting the lake waves is that the waves were displacing so much water within the lake that the weight of the water was actually deforming the thinner Earth crust over the volcano's caldera, propagating the wave through the Earth's molten layer, located about 2 to 4 miles below, to the delicate sensors miles away.

"So the crust kind of bends to get out of the way," Luttrell said. The deformation is very small, only 1 to 2 nano strains - equal to about 1 or 2 microns over a distance of 2 kilometers. There are 25,400 microns in 1 inch. And the moon and sun daily cause strains of about 50 nano strains because of their gravitational pull. "So this is a really small deformation," Luttrell said. The waves on the lake are equally small, rising only about an inch or two tall over the course of an hour and a half. But it may take a few days for the waves to dissipate. "You wouldn't notice this if you were out fishing in a boat," she said. But the waves are wide and displace a sizeable amount of water between the lake's large basins. Water has been detected sloshing between the lake's West Thumb and Southeast Arm at an interval of about 78 minutes. It also moves between the Southeast Arm and north end of the lake near Fishing Bridge at a rate of about every 51 minutes. "So even if it's not very high, it's a pretty big mass," Luttrell said. By employing her calculator, Luttrell estimated that a 10 centimeter Yellowstone Lake seiche weighs about 5 million tons.

17:50: The tremor has been rising steadily since this morning. Up to now, one could observe minor strombolian ejections at the New SE Crater (NSEC). It looks as if the situation is about to develop differently as the thermal cameras are showing the beginning of a lava fountain. A new paroxysm may be in progress.

20 :00 : The situation is moving forward with more intense strombolian activity at the summit and a lava flow on the flank of the cone.

sorry, the time of the first image there above is 1410, not 1645, the point I am making is it was white and snowy there, and in 3 short hours, in freezing conditions, there has been a lot of snow melt.

Past Volcanic Eruptions in the Auckland Field More Common

seems to suggest that the Auckland Field and Rangitoto have been more active during the last few thousand years that previously appreciated...
What does this mean for Auckland? Well, the previous interpretation of Rangitoto was that it was a monogenetic shield volcano, like Mauna Ulu on Kilauea. This means that after an eruption begins from a specific vent, it might erupt from months to a few years, but then go quiet. The next eruption would likely not be sourced from the same vent as before, but possibly somewhere else within the Auckland Field. Shane and others finding instead suggest that Rangitoto puffed away for a thousand years before the final voluminous eruption that formed much of the island on which it sits. For Auckland, this is relatively bad news as the volcanic risk models for the area has been focussed on short eruptions (weeks to years), but if the tephra analysis from Lake Pupuke is correct, then an eruptive center in the Auckland Field could be active for hundreds if not a thousand years (intermittently, of course). Those of you who think a lot of volcanic mitigation know that this changes the game for the city of Auckland, because if a new eruption could produce small explosive eruptions and lava flows for hundreds of years, how the city copes with such activity is very different than an eruption that only lasts a few months. That being said, this news is not catastrophic for Auckland, either. Think about all the people living around Etna on Sicily, a place that has survived through persistent volcanic activity like we might expect from the Auckland Field for thousands of years. A hypothetical 500 year eruption sequence in the Auckland Field would clearly have a dramatic effect on the city, but depending on the location of the vent, it is by no means a death sentence for the city.

Barb, re: Auckland earthquakes, those were unrelated to any volcanic activity & along a semi-known fault line in Auckland. Happens to be next to a volcano (though the fault could be why the volcano is there!), but these EQs were tectonic in origin and way too shallow to be signs of initial magma intrusion (we hope!) at 5-6 km. We get the odd (small) shake here and there in Auckland as a matter of course--we are the Shaky Isles, after all!

nah. that stuff should be mostly locked down by moisture and snowfall. maybe a bit would be mobilised, but nowhere near the amounts shown in that image, and why would it be so 'plume' like and directed like it is in that image anyway?
