New Look at Earth's Mysterious Layer

A mysterious layer lies beneath Earth's massive tectonic plates.
Sandwiched between two rock layers — the rigid lithosphere and the more pliable asthenosphere— this thin boundary is like the jelly in a peanut butter sandwich. Scientists think it could be very wet rock, or even partially melted rock, but no one knows for sure...
The lithosphere-asthenosphere boundary (LAB) puts the "plate" in plate tectonics, marking the bottom of the stiff tectonic plates that shift on Earth's surface, riding convection currents deeper in Earth's mantle. Both layers are solid rock, but the lithosphere is hard, stiff and cold and the hotter asthenosphere flows and deforms on a geologic time scale. The discontinuity, molten or not, lies at depths from 30 miles (50 km) under the ocean floor to 120 miles (200 km) beneath continents.

My concern would be if the focal mechanism shows “normal” faulting and it was moderately shallow with a mostly east-west strike plane. That might be an issue. It’s the sort of things that odd seamounts are made of.

… oh, and it would have to be conspicuously large. So large that posting about a quake here would not be the hot news item… it would be the tsunami.

...On the evening of 12 April, there was still a lot of glow visible on the cone and along the lava flows emitted during the paroxysm, but gradually, the heat diminished, and it seemed as though the crater had settled into a period of quiescence, as usual between paroxysms. But on the late forenoon of 13 April, gas emission sometimes mixed with some light brown ash was coming from a spot at the southeastern base of the New Southeast Crater cone, and soon it was clear that a new small lava flow was emerging from that spot. No other visible activity occurred at the crater, also when night fell and I toured the eastern flank of Etna to take a few photographs, like this one, taken from the northern margin of the town of Zafferana Etnea, on the southeast flank of the volcano. The active lava flow and its source at the base of the looming New Southeast Crater cone is clearly visible at left, whereas no particular action is seen at the crater - except for two small glowing spots high on the northeast (right) flank of the cone. These glowing spots are places where hot gas is emitted - hot enough to heat the rocks surrounding the gas vent to incandescence

The activity reported today at 11 h, remains in a similar level. The ash emission with variable ammounts, together with steam and gas, is observed with an average altitude of 500 m, above the crater. The plume is dispersed towards the northeast, in the direction of Huejotzingo and Tlaxcala.

The Volcanic Alert Level remains at Yellow Phase 2.

At 8:58 h an exhalation with some explosive component ocurred, followed by a spasmodic tremor signal with moderate to large amplitudes, which has been accompanied by a continuous emission of variable ammounts of ash and water vapor. Due to the prevailing strong winds, the ash and gas column reached a maximum height of 400 m, (see image), (see image) being dispersed over the slopes of the volcano towards the northeast (see image),(see image). At the time of this report, there has been confirmed ash falls on the towns of San Nicolas de los Ranchos, Huejotzingo and the north side of Puebla. It is expected that ash fall will be reported on other towns of the same sector.
