Two lava flows could be observed during the night: one towards the Valle del Bove and the other on the SW flank of the New SE Crater. However, they were not very long. Activity was essentially concentrated at the summit. Right now, it looks as if the tremor is starting to decline.

Paroxysm or no paroxysm?

...I observed the activity from 03:00 GMT (=local time -2) on 11 April, first at Monte Fontane on the east flank of Etna, then, when clouds covered the view from that side, from Monte Vetore on the southwest flank, where the view eventually was obstructed by weather clouds, too. Finally, I went to Piano del Vescovo, on the southeast flank, where visibility was rapidly improving as sunset approached, and at dusk, things became a fabulous display of lights and colors. Even without a lava fountain, this activity was extremely spectacular, in particular the soundtrack. I stayed at Piano del Vescovo, with countless other persons who came and went (I estimate that in total, between 300 and 500 people went to Piano del Vescovo, stayed for a shorter or longer period, and then went away), including a few friends and also new acquaintances. Everybody had a great time - but time did take its toll on me, and at 02:00 GMT on 12 April, I decided to go home in spite of the unabated activity.

As a matter of fact, the activity is still continuing vigorously, without lava fountains and with less tephra than the previous paroxysms, but attracting enormous attraction in the local population and in the media due to the good visibility, the continued loud detonations, and the extended duration of this eruptive episode...

and finally, the new paroxysmThe lava fountain did not come, hour after hour, through the evening of 11 April and then through the night, and all the time there were those powerful explosions and loud, LOUD bangs, which made people in surrounding areas wonder what the hell was up with Etna. Also this morning, 12 April, the loud explosions continued, and in the clear morning light, a dense but almost ash-free gas plume was seen rising from the volcano and trailing southeast, for at least a hundred kilometers over the Ionian Sea.

When nobody thought anymore of a lava fountain during this particular eruptive episode, and all believed this would remain in Etna's history as a "paroxysm without lava fountains", a sort of failure, Lady Etna finally let loose. Shortly after noon on 12 April, the plume rising from the New Southeast Crater suddenly turned black, heavily charged with tephra (fragmented volcanic material: mostly ash and scoriaceous lapilli), and the base of this dark column was dull red. The lava fountain had finally started...

On the evening of 11 April 2013 it looked very much like Etna's New Southeast Crater would produce its 10th paroxysmal eruptive episode of this year. But the expected lava fountain, which I had self-assuredly announced to all people who were with me at Piano del Vescovo, a spectacular observation point on Etna's southeast flank, did not come until the late forenoon of 12 April, on the anniversary of another spectacular lava fountain from the same crater (12 April 2012). Instead, the thing angrily growled and exploded, and this was a magnificent show as well - and Piano del Vescovo was rather crowded even for hours after midnight on 12 April 2013.
