Since yesterday, Mount Etna’s SE Crater has been emitting pulses of ash at regular intervals. The eruptive tremor and seismicity are still at relatively low levels but the situation may change rapidly. As Borris Behncke (INGV Catania) put it after the last paroxysm, the “preludes” are getting shorter and the volcano may erupt without warning.

A series of seismic events within the volcano El Ruiz shook towns near Bogota over the weekend, as cameras from the Colombian Geological Service (SGC) captured geysers of hot gas and ash. Constant seismic activity in the last three days has experts hyper vigilant. Nevado del Ruiz, a hulking 17,457 ft volcano straddling the border of the Caldas and Tolima departments, is the most observed volcano in the country. El Ruiz took the world stage in 1985 when a tragic eruption destroyed Armero, claiming an estimated 25,000 lives. The largest earthquake, of 4.0 magnitude with a depth of 4.6 miles, was reported by the SGC on Sunday morning. The seismic activity registered since April 13th through yesterday's earthquake has been "associated with fracturing of rock on the interior of the volcanic structure," according to the SGC website. El Ruiz is a stratovolcano, meaning that it is made of alternating layers of lava and hardened volcanic ash. The eruptions from El Ruiz can cause lahars, or flows of mud and debris. The eruption before the lahar which destroyed Armero was relatively small. El Ruiz has been active for an estimated two million years.

More ash emissions at the SE Crater

One can see large ash emissions at the SE Crater this morning. However, it is difficult to know whether another paroxysm is going to take place. It seems the INGV website is not accessible right now.
The L.A.V.E. webcam shows that some strombolian activity occurred at 2:30 or so this morning:

i missed the start of it, but Channel 5+1 is on channel 177 on Sky, so you can watch it at 9pm

they are REALLY ramping Iceland doom, put it that way.

without a doubt. you won't get many responses, because people are all katla'd out, but when they realise the full implications of what may happen here, the interest will perk up.

a lot possible mistakes (which however is quite excusable for amateur observes as in volkanocafe ):

firstly, eqs "like this one" will last a long time (a month - six weeks) at intervals of a day or two, then followed a sharp increase in magnitude and only after that, "1-2 hour " later (more likely 6-8 hours) will eruptive phase.
then, " major strain event" and eruptive phase will start simultaneously, tremor before will almost absent (or extremely short time).
finally, not necessarily be the beginning of an explosive nature, the first phase may be numerous fissure eruptions of lava and then blasts the main crater and ash emissions

Etna

...19:45: The 13th paroxysm is at its highest with lava fountains and at least one lava flow. A conventional but dramatic event!

20:30: It’s now night on Mount Etna. The paroxysm is going on with a lava fountain and a lava low travelling towards the Valle del Bove.

21:00: The INGV website with the tremor and the seismographs is no longer accessible but it seems the paroxysm has lost some of its intensity. The lava fountains are less powerful. However, the lava flow that travels towards the Valle del Bove is still well fed.

21:30: Even though the lava fountains are still vigorous, the tremor shows that the 13th paroxysm is declining. Like the previous ones, it was quite spectacular despite the start that could not really be seen because of the clouds.

Yeah i watched the channel 5 documentary. Scary stuff.

With the potential for the UK to be affected by sulphuric acid mist, i'm considering buying some gas masks!
