Plosky Tolbachik volcano activity intensifies in Kamchatka

May 6, 2013 – KAMCHATKA – Observers in Kamchatka have registered intensification of the activity of the Plosky Tolbachik volcano, the Kamchatka volcano observatory reported on Monday, referring to data of the scientists that work at the Tolud base in the immediate vicinity of the eruption site. The activity intensification was recorded on May 4 “in the lateral outbreak crater,” the observatory specified. Lava is gushing there, ejected to a height of 100 meters. According to the Kamchatka branch of the Geophysical Service of the Russian Academy of Sciences (RAS), high seismic activity is registered on the volcano – the giant mount with a height exceeding 3.85 thousand metres above sea level, is vibrating with an amplitude of 3.25 microns per second. The eruption of the Plosky Tolbachik volcano continues for the sixth consecutive month. In the early days of the eruption lava flows from Plosky Toblachik destroyed two bases of the Institute of Volcanology and Seismology that were located in the Tolbachink dale. However, scientists believe that the eruption is a real present for the 50th anniversary of the Institute that was marked in 2012. The eruption was given its own name – “Fissure Eruption of the 50th Anniversary of the Institute of Volcanology and Seismology of the Far Eastern Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences in the Tolbachik Dale.” Plosky Tolbachik awakened on November 27, last year, after being dormant for 36 years from the moment of its great fissure eruption that was observed in 1975-1976. In Tolbachik dale, south of Plosky Tolbachik at an altitude of about 1.7 kilometres above sea level, a fissure zone with two active centres formed. The lava has been pouring from there. The Plosky Tolbachik eruption was assessed by scientists as outstanding. A lava lake has formed in the active zone. The lava flows have destroyed a station of the Institute of Volcanology and Seismology in the area of the Vodopadny creek, the Leningradskaya research base and a base of the Volcanoes of Kamchatka natural park. Trees were burning near the lava fields. The erupting volcano in Russia’s Far East has become a sightseeing hotspot for crowds of thrill-seeking tourists eager to see flows of lava and clouds of ash. The height of Plosky Tolbachik is 3 thousand 85 metres above sea level. It is located in the south-western sector of the Klyuchevskaya group of volcanoes in Kamchatka in the east 343 kilometres from Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky. The volcano poses no threat to nearby populated localities. Emergencies Ministry officers have been on duty in the volcano area whose task is to ensure safety of people going to the foot of the giant mount. There are five populated localities at distances from 50 km to 68 km from the foot of the volcano – the settlements of Klyuchi, Maiskoye, Kozyrevsk, Lazo and Atlasovo with the total population of more than 8.1 thousand. Are future eruptions possible west of the Island of Hawai'i?

Do you, like most people, think that eruptions in Hawaii are confined to the Island of Hawai'i on Maui has erupted at least once in the past 500 years and will probably erupt again.While most eruptions in the Hawaiian Islands over the past several hundred years have occurred on the Islands of Maui and Hawai'i—not all of them have.
Submarine eruptions west of Maui have been reported three times in the past 60 years. The first was in August–September 1955, near Necker Island (650 km or 410 mi northwest of Honolulu). The most recent was in early 2011, when a sea captain reported "steam rising up violently from the sea surface" in the vicinity of Milwaukee Bank, more than 3,000 km (almost 2,000 mi) northwest of Honolulu. No samples were obtained, so volcanic activity could not be confirmed. Neither location was expected to host volcanic activity ever again...

Mayon Volcano (13.2500°N, 123.6833°E) at 8:00 AM today, produced a small phreatic event that lasted about 73 seconds. The gray to brown clouds reached 500 meters above the summit and drifted west southwest. No volcanic earthquake was detected within the past 24-hour observation period. Seismic and gas emission parameters remain within background levels and indicate no intensification of volcanic activity.
With the above observations, PHIVOLCS is maintaining an Alert Level 0 status which means that no magmatic eruption is imminent. However, small phreatic explosions including small steam and ash ejections may occur suddenly with little or no warning. It is strongly advised that the public refrain from entering the 6-kilometer radius Permanent Danger Zone (PDZ) due to the threat of sudden steam-driven eruptions and rock falls from the upper and middle slopes of the volcano

Beautifully symmetrical Mayon volcano, which rises to 2462 m above the Albay Gulf, is the Philippines' most active volcano. The structurally simple volcano has steep upper slopes averaging 35-40 degrees that are capped by a small summit crater. The historical eruptions of this basaltic-andesitic volcano date back to 1616 and range from strombolian to basaltic plinian, with cyclical activity beginning with basaltic eruptions, followed by longer term andesitic lava flows. Eruptions occur predominately from the central conduit and have also produced lava flows that travel far down the flanks. Pyroclastic flows and mudflows have commonly swept down many of the approximately 40 ravines that radiate from the summit and have often devastated populated lowland areas. Mayon's most violent eruption, in 1814, killed more than 1200 people and devastated several towns.

... 5 climbers were killed and at least 7 others were seriously injured near the crater of Mayon volcano when it spewed huge rocks and ash after daybreak Tuesday in its first eruption in three years. The volcano was quiet at the moment of the accident. The 20 climbers were surprised by an explosion which was both sudden and violent.

The climbers who died were struck by huge rocks, “as big as a living-room”, according to a guide. They include a German, an Austrian and a Filipino. The injured include foreigners and Filipino guides. Some are in critical condition.

No alert was raised for the volcano following the latest eruption and no evacuation is being planned...

...Rescue teams were sent to Mayon volcano in the central Philippines to look for four climbers and guides trapped after the mild eruption, Albay provincial Gov. Joey Salceda said. Clouds have cleared over the volcano, which was quiet later in the morning (local time).

The four climbers who died were struck by huge rocks, guide Kenneth Jesalva told ABS-CBN TV network by cellphone from a camp near the crater. Another man was critically injured from a group of eight that included five foreigners and three Filipino guides.

One of those killed was Filipino. The nationalities of the foreign climbers were not immediately clear. No bodies have been retrieved yet.

Jesalva said he was in the group that spent the night on the picturesque mountain, known for its almost-perfect cone, when the volcano rumbled back to life early in the morning and rocks "as big as a living room" came raining down on them...

In the past two weeks the activity of Popocatépetl volcano has increased. Today an increase in the general levels of activity was noticed, in particular some explosions, volcanotectonic seisms, tremor episodes and exhalation trains, so based on the recomendatio of the Scientific Assesing Comitee, the Interior Ministry decided to increase the Volcanic Alert Level to Yellow, Phase 3.

The increase in the general activity of Popocatepetl volcano during the last weeks and especially the acceleration of the seismic activity registered yesterday, today at 01:40 am, the Interior Ministry raised the Volcanic Alert Level to Yellow Phase 3. During the period in which the volcanic traffic light remains in this level, two bulletins will be issued daily: the first at 10:00 am, with a summary of the activity of the last 24 h and the second at 07:00 pm, featuring updating the data reported in the first. If necessary, the updates will be reported more frequently.

During the last 24 h, the monitoring system of Popocatepetl volcano registered a long episode of harmonic tremor of high amplitude, beginning yesterday at 16:00 h (local time) until 05:45 h (local time) of this early morning (see image 1). This activity was accompanied by the emission of a continuous steam and gas plume, containing small to moderate amounts of ash, which was released in denser pulses (see image 2). The emission of incandescent fragments was also observed sporadically, which mainly fell in to the crater interior. However, at 01:10 h, some part of these fragments fell on the highest part of the volcano north-northeast flanks, at maximum distance of 300 m (see imagen 3), (seeimagen 4). The tremor was registered in several stages of 1 to 2 hours of duration, continuously or in segments. Each stage began with an explosion of moderate intensity. The most important occurred at 17:00 h (local time) and was perceived by much of the villages close to the east and southeast flanks of the volcano.

From 05:45 h to 07:26 h the harmonic tremor decreased in amplitude and was registered in segments, which gradually spaced themself. At 07:27 h (see image 5) and at 08:10 h, two other exhalations with explosive component were recorded and were followed by new segments of harmonic tremor of high amplitude, between 08:39 h and 08:58 h.

Additionally, during the last 24 h the monitoring system registered 60 exhalations of low to moderate intensity, accompanied by the emission of a steam and gas plume, and possibly by small to moderate amounts of ash; although it was not possible to observe this clearly...

Sometime in the next month, it is expected to record a daily concentration of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere of more than 400 parts per million (p.p.m.), a value not reached at this key surveillance point for a few million years...

...Recent Observations at Kilauea summit: The summit tiltmeter network recorded about 0.3 microradians of inflationary tilt over the past 24 hours and the summit lava lake rose slightly with several travelling spattering sources and minor temporary jumps when spattering was absent. This morning, weak trade winds continued guiding the gas plume southwestward into morning fog - new emission rate measurements must await the return of moderate trade winds. Gas emissions remain elevated with the plume carrying a very small amount of ash-sized tephra (mostly fresh spatter bits and Pele's hair) out of the vent and depositing it on nearby surfaces. Seismic tremor levels remained at low values with sporadic drops in value about every 3-4 hours when spattering on the lava lake ceased; conversely when there are two or more spattering areas on the lava lake, the tremor levels are nearly double the values when only one spatterer is present.
Thirteen earthquakes were strong enough to be located beneath Kilauea Volcano in the past 24 hours: 1 just northeast of Halema`uma`u Crater, 2 south of the crater, 9 within the upper east rift zone, and 1 on south flank faults. Up to 6/hr minor earthquakes-too weak to locate-continued to occur in the upper east rift zone. The GPS receivers located on either side of the summit caldera recorded slow extension in May following minor contraction through April...

Since the last bulletin at 10:00 h, the monitoring system of Popocatépetl volcano registered 3 h of segments of harmonic tremor of medium and high amplitude, between 10:00 h and 11:12 h, and since 17:30 h to the moment of this report. Additionally, the system registered 20 exhalations of low to moderate intensity. The most important occurred at 14:16 h, which had explosive component.
Until an hour ago there was not visibility to the volcano, due to the cloudy conditions in the area. Since 18:00 h it was possible to observe the crater and the continuous emission of a steam and gas plume, and occasionally denser pulses containing small to moderate amounts of ash (see image 8), heading to northeast.
The harmonic tremor that began at 17:30 h continues at the moment to finish this report and has a tendency to increase.
