Pavlof
Volcano Type: Stratovolcano
Volcano Status: Historical
Last Known Eruption: 2007
...Pavlof has been frequently active in historical time, typically producing strombolian to vulcanian explosive eruptions from the summit vents and occasional lava flows. The active vents lie near the summit on the north and east sides. The largest historical eruption of Pavlof took place in 1911, at the end of a 5-year-long eruptive episode. During this eruption a fissure opened on the northern flank of the volcano, ejecting large blocks and issuing lava flows.

May 12 02:40 h (Mayo 12, 07:40 GMT)

In the past two weeks the activity of Popocatépetl volcano has increased. Today an increase in the general levels of activity was noticed, in particular some explosions, volcanotectonic seisms, tremor episodes and exhalation trains, so based on the recomendatio of the Scientific Assesing Comitee, the Interior Ministry decided to increase the Volcanic Alert Level to Yellow, Phase 3.

May 12 10:00 h (May 12, 15:00 GMT)

The increase in the general activity of Popocatepetl volcano during the last weeks and especially the acceleration of the seismic activity registered yesterday, today at 01:40 am, the Interior Ministry raised the Volcanic Alert Level to Yellow Phase 3. During the period in which the volcanic traffic light remains in this level, two bulletins will be issued daily: the first at 10:00 am, with a summary of the activity of the last 24 h and the second at 07:00 pm, featuring updating the data reported in the first. If necessary, the updates will be reported more frequently.

During the last 24 h, the monitoring system of Popocatepetl volcano registered a long episode of harmonic tremor of high amplitude, beginning yesterday at 16:00 h (local time) until 05:45 h (local time) of this early morning (see image 1). This activity was accompanied by the emission of a continuous steam and gas plume, containing small to moderate amounts of ash, which was released in denser pulses (see image 2). The emission of incandescent fragments was also observed sporadically, which mainly fell in to the crater interior. However, at 01:10 h, some part of these fragments fell on the highest part of the volcano north-northeast flanks, at maximum distance of 300 m (see imagen 3), (seeimagen 4). The tremor was registered in several stages of 1 to 2 hours of duration, continuously or in segments. Each stage began with an explosion of moderate intensity. The most important occurred at 17:00 h (local time) and was perceived by much of the villages close to the east and southeast flanks of the volcano.

From 05:45 h to 07:26 h the harmonic tremor decreased in amplitude and was registered in segments, which gradually spaced themself. At 07:27 h (see image 5) and at 08:10 h, two other exhalations with explosive component were recorded and were followed by new segments of harmonic tremor of high amplitude, between 08:39 h and 08:58 h.

Additionally, during the last 24 h the monitoring system registered 60 exhalations of low to moderate intensity, accompanied by the emission of a steam and gas plume, and possibly by small to moderate amounts of ash; although it was not possible to observe this clearly...

May 12 19:00 h (May 13, 00:00 GMT)
Since the last bulletin at 10:00 h, the monitoring system of Popocatépetl volcano registered 3 h of segments of harmonic tremor of medium and high amplitude, between 10:00 h and 11:12 h, and since 17:30 h to the moment of this report. Additionally, the system registered 20 exhalations of low to moderate intensity. The most important occurred at 14:16 h, which had explosive component.
Until an hour ago there was not visibility to the volcano, due to the cloudy conditions in the area. Since 18:00 h it was possible to observe the crater and the continuous emission of a steam and gas plume, and occasionally denser pulses containing small to moderate amounts of ash (see image 8), heading to northeast.
The harmonic tremor that began at 17:30 h continues at the moment to finish this report and has a tendency to increase.

volcano Activity in USA on Tuesday, 14 May, 2013 at 03:26 (03:26 AM) UTC.

Description
Tremors were detected at Pavlof Volcano, 625 miles southwest of Anchorage, according to the Alaska Volcano Observatory. Satellite imagery showed the mountain was "very, very hot," said John Power, the U.S. Geological Survey scientist in charge at the observatory. The aviation alert level for Pavlof was raised from "yellow" to "orange." A major ash emission could threaten international flights. Pavlof is 37 miles from the community of Cold Bay, which was notified of the new activity that began about 8 a.m. Monday. Because of clouds, the volcano was not visible to the village of 100. The volcano last erupted in 2007, but residents there said that eruption had no impact on Cold Bay, likely because the winds blew any ash fall away. Ash clouds were visible to residents, however.

Even if seismicity is frequent in this area, one is impressed by the seismic swarm that is taking place off the Reykjanes Peninsula. These tectonic events show the forces that are exerted in Iceland, the emergence of the Mid-Atlantic ridge and the witness of the accretion between the North American and Eurasian plates.

Richard Monastersky 30 April 2013

Near the moonscape summit of the Mauna Loa volcano in Hawaii, an infrared analyser will soon make history. Sometime in the next month, it is expected to record a daily concentration of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere of more than 400 parts per million (p.p.m.), a value not reached at this key surveillance point for a few million years...

Greenland “snow drought” makes big 2013 melt more likely
Figure 1. Western ice sheet snowfall totals are 30%-70% of normal. Brown areas have less than ‘normal’ precipitation:
[link to www.meltfactor.org]
Multiple melt factors combine to increase the odds of more melt water runoff from the ice sheet during the 2013 melt season:

1.less ‘cold content’ of snow to melt away (ablate) for a given energy input before bare ice is exposed;
2.a longer period of exposed darker bare ice, in this case weeks earlier bare ice exposure is likely unless a big snow dump before or during the coming warm season;
3.Less snow leads to a smaller refreezing capacity in the lower accumulation area. Thanks Robert Fausto of GEUS for reminding me of this one.
4.a possible higher concentration of light absorbing impurities per unit volume of snow, assuming that the impurities are deposited whether or not it snows.
This pattern results from a persistent atmospheric anomaly, blocking cold air transport southward along west Greenland, producing relatively warm temperatures there while northwestern Europe has had a cold winter (Figure 2 [link to www.meltfactor.org]
The precipitation anomaly is manifesting in abnormally low land and ice sheet reflectivity (albedo) (Figure 3)...

great post

...Our options are limited in how to fund pure science or volcano monitoring. Do we become beholden to commercial interest by requiring private funding for science — and if you can’t get funding from a company than your research is “unworthy”? Do we turn scientists into internet buskers, asking for money to do their work through Kickstarter campaigns? Even my research, which is limited by the nature of my job at a small liberals arts college*, costs a significant amount of money per year to pay for student stipends, lab time, supplies, travel, field work and more. For my colleagues at research-oriented institution, where research productivity is vital for job security, the cost is much higher. By cutting government funding of research or forcing the commercialization of science research, we’re saying that science for discovery is no longer viable or useful. Is this something you want to teach your children or grandchildren, that science can only be done if it will make someone money? Or do we want to say “no” to this trend that “business is boss” across our society and make the stand that science research is the core to discovery in the United States and across the globe.

At 15:52 h and 21:49 h of the day yesterday, two volcanotectonic events was registered of Mc = 1.6 and 1.4 degrees. Today at 08:01 h was an event of Mc = 1.9 degrees. At 09:56 h there was an explosive event that generated an emission of steam and gas with moderate amounts of ash that reached a height of 3 km above the crater and threw fragments fell over a distance of 600 m on the side of the volcano, according to the wind direction, the emision had a NE direction. Prior to the explosion plume emission was observed with a vertical direction and narrow shape. (see Figure 1) . (see Figure 2) . (see picture 3) . (see picture 4) . (see figure 5) . (see figure 6) .
The harmonic tremor that began at 17:30 h continues at the moment to finish this report and has a tendency to increase.

...On Popocatepetl, harmonic tremor segments of medium and large amplitude are still registered. Intervals between these episodes are getting longer.

An explosive event occurred on May 14th at about 10 o’clock. A flight performed after this event revealed that the dome was 350 metres in diameter and 50 metres thick. After the explosion, the dome appeared to have slightly deflated. CENAPRED scientists think that the explosion might represent the beginning of the dome’s destruction.

And whatever it was it ended as abruptly as it started. Could have been a dike or sill emplacement. Not a clue really, probably not a jökulhlaup though since it lasted such a short time.
I think this is yet another sign of Bárdarbunga slowly awakening.

Notice Number: 2013/A9
Location: N 55 deg 25 min W 161 deg 53 min
Elevation: 8261 ft (2518 m)
Area: Alaska Peninsula Alaska

Volcanic Activity Summary: Seismic activity at Pavlof Volcano increased this morning commensurate with the presence of an intense thermal anomaly at the summit observed in latest satellite imagery. Similar patterns of seismicity and elevated surface temperatures have previously signaled the onset of eruptive activity at Pavlof. Although not yet visually confirmed, a low-level eruption of lava has likely begun from a summit vent. No ash clouds have been detected...

PAVLOF VOLCANO (CAVW #1102-03-)
...Following an increase in seismic activity and presence of intense elevated surface temperatures yesterday, eruptive activity at Pavlof has been confirmed. Pilot reports and satellite images today reveal that a spatter-fed lava flow has advanced about a half a kilometer down the north flank of the volcano. See an image at [link to www.avo.alaska.edu] Minor steam and ash emissions are visible at the summit from nearby Cold Bay

CLEVELAND VOLCANO (CAVW #1101-24-)
...Elevated surface temperatures continued at Cleveland Volcano over the past 24 hours. No explosions have been detected by regional infrasound data. Analysis of recent satellite imagery revealed a 100-m-wide lava flow, breaching the southeast rim of the summit crater, and extending about 1.5 km down the southeast flank.

Sudden explosions of blocks and ash are possible with little or no warning. Ash clouds, if produced, could exceed 20,000 feet above sea level...

PAVLOF VOLCANO (CAVW #1102-03-)

Current Volcano Alert Level: WATCH
Current Aviation Color Code: ORANGE

Seismic tremor, intense elevated surface temperatures, and ash, gas and steam emissions continue at Pavlof Volcano.

A plume of steam, ash, and gas, occasionally reaching up to 22,000 ft. above sea level, and extending primarily southeast from the volcano over the North Pacific Ocean is visible in satellite images today. Pilot reports from this morning also indicate that ash emission continues and ash clouds are rising to 21,000 to 22,000 feet above sea level. Minor to trace amounts of ash fall is likely occurring on the north, east and southeast flanks of the volcano and possibly on parts of Pavlof Bay and adjacent waters southeast of the volcano. Overnight, trace amounts of ash were reported to have fallen on the community of Sand Point ( [link to dec.alaska.gov] and a special weather statement for ash fall was issued for Nelson Lagoon at 10:00 AM AKDT this morning ( [link to pafc.arh.noaa.gov]

Seismic activity remains elevated with nearly continuous volcanic tremor being recorded on the local seismic network. Although the activity to date has been characterized by relatively low-energy lava fountaining and ash emission, more energetic explosions could occur without warning at any time that could place ash clouds above 20,000 ft. Depending on wind direction, trace to minor amounts of ash may fall on nearby communities, including Sand Point, Nelson Lagoon, King Cove and Cold Bay. Information about mitigating the effects of volcanic ash can be found on the AVO web page.
