Ash cloud travel insurance / why scientists should blog
Posted on June 3, 2013 by John A. Stevenson:
I was quoted on the Daily Telegraph website at the weekend, in an article about the number of travel insurance companies whose policies cover volcanic ash. I’d answered some questions from the author by email, then he told me when it was published so I could see how it turned out. You can read the article here: [link to www.telegraph.co.uk]
... Hekla and Katla are both ‘overdue’ for an eruption e.g. the time since their last eruption is longer than the average time between other recent eruptions. Check the Smithsonian website for details. Of these, a Katla eruption could be very damaging within Iceland...

This is the questions scientists are trying to answer this week at London’s British Museum during a conference entitled “When Europe was covered by ice and ash”.
Some researchers are suggesting that Neanderthals were driven to extinction by a massive volcanic eruption of the Campi Flegrei near Naples 39,000 years ago that led to the triumph of the Homo Sapiens. That was the biggest volcanic eruption in Europe for more than 200,000 years and scientists say that its enormous plumes of ash would have blotted out the sun for months, or possibly years...

At 18:40 hours descendió lahar in the Rio Nimo 1 in its first five minutes with weak noise and quite fluid and subsequently has started listening stronger, giving the impression of being more dense and with enough material blocks, they're being drained to the vicinity of Samalá Channel. Nothing is moving and is likely to move for about 40-60 more minutes. At 18:55 hours the noise was dense, there is likely to overflow. The cumulative precipitacion is 19.8 mm and it is possible lahar in the gorge San Isidro. The measurements are 40 meters wide by 2.5 meters high.

Therefore, INSIVUMEH recommends: CONRED, take the necessary precautions, especially in the banks of the rivers, especially on the river where it can cause overflows Samalo as in previous years.
In the address General COVIAL ROADS and note that laharicos events continue dondose during the rainy season and some of them can cause flooding mainly in the back of the boy and the bridge Castillo Armas.

Volcano Activity in Nicaragua on Saturday, 08 June, 2013 at 04:42 (04:42 AM) UTC.

Description
Volcanic tremors and small-scale eruptions Friday put the Nicaraguan Army on alert in case an early warning is required, said the head of the army's Civil Defense in the western Chinandega department Maj. Carlos Caceres. According to his division, the San Cristobal Volcano, located 132 kilometers southwest of the capital Managua, registered some 14 mini-eruptions Friday, accompanied by a cloud of gas and ash over the crater. The Nicaraguan Institute of Territorial Studies (Ineter) said a team of its experts have been stationed for several days some 650 meters from the crater, to better assess the situation. Until now, the experts believe that all volcanic activity has been concentrated inside the crater, and therefore has not posed a danger to the 20 communities situated within a five-kilometer radius of San Cristobal. The Civil Defense's Lt. Col. Gustavo Ramos, who is part of Ineter's team in the area, told the local daily El Nuevo Diario that they were taking samples of the gas emanating from the crater. According to the army division, at least six properties near the crater, including the one hosting Ineter's experts, could be affected if volcanic activity increases. San Cristobal is one of Nicaragua's highest and most active volcanoes, measuring 1,745 meters in height.

Volcano Eruption in Russia [Asia] on Sunday, 09 June, 2013 at 16:52 (04:52 PM) UTC.

Description
The Kamchatkan volcano Shiveluch has thrice emitted columns of hot volcanic ash and gas. The tallest plume reached nine kilometers above the sea level, the Kamchatkan branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences' Geophysical Service reported on Sunday. A code orange alert was issued for the volcano. "Volcano seismicity is excessive, with rocks tumbling down its slopes," the report said. In turn, the Kamchatkan territorial department of the Russian Emergency Situations Ministry said Shiveluch did not jeopardize residential areas and there had been no ash-fall. Rescuers do not recommend visiting the erupting volcano, because ash may cause allergy in people and clog automobile systems. Shiveluch is the northernmost active volcano of Kamchatka; it is situated 45 kilometers away from the Klyuchi town in the Ust-Kamchatsk district with the population of about 5,000. It is also one of the largest volcanoes in Kamchatka. Activity of Shiveluch intensified in May 2009, and a crack of about 30 meters deep went through its dome.

Copahue (Chile-Argentina)
OVDAS-SERNAGEOMIN reported that during 4-11 June white plumes recorded by a web camera rose at most 200 m above Copahue and drifted N and E. During 4-5 June seismicity had decreased with respect to the previous 24-hour period; the majority of the signals were low-magnitude hybrid events, detected at an average rate of 42 per hour. During 5-6 June seismicity was similar to the previous period, with an average of 50 events per hour being detected. Seismicity increased during 6-7 June; an average of 84 events per hour was detected. During 7-8 June seismicity fluctuated with a high average of 124 events per hour then decreased to a low average of 8 events per hour; the overall average was 62 events per hour. Seismicity decreased during 8-9 June; only 5 events per hour were detected. On 9 June OVDAS-SERNAGEOMIN scientists aboard an overflight to locate sites for the installation of three additional seismic stations observed fumaroles inside Del Agrio Crater, and gas emissions that rose at most 200 m and drifted NE. They noted that no lava dome was present. During 9-10 June the number of earthquakes increased to an average of 20 events per hour. The Alert Level remained at Orange.

Updated: Friday, 14 June, 2013 at 02:50 UTC
Description
Scientists have raised the alert level for a volcano in the Alaska Peninsula. The Alaska Earthquake Observatory said in a release that elevated surface temperatures recorded Thursday morning at Veniaminof Volcano indicate an eruption is likely underway at the intracaldera cone. No ash plumes were observed Thursday, but clouds have obscured views from a Web camera aimed at the summit. However, scientists said seismic tremors continue, which is an indication of low-level effusive activity and small explosions. The volcano has had elevated levels of seismic activity since Saturday, along with steam emissions. It's located about 480 miles southwest of Anchorage. Scientists said minor emissions of steam and ash may last for months. Veniaminof, pronounced ven-ee-ah-mean-off, has erupted at least 12 times in the past 200 years. The most significant eruptions occurred between 1993 and 1995 when the volcano produced steam and ash and a small lava flow was extruded from a vent. The lava flow melted snow and ice, producing an oval-shaped ice pit. Recent eruptions have been characterized by small explosions and brief bursts of ash, but the latter don't reach more than 20,000 feet. Minor ash-producing explosions occurred in 2002, 2004 and 2005. An eruption in 1983 and 1984 produced an ash plume that went up 25,000 feet. In 1939 following an eruption, several centimeters of fine ash fell on Perryville, about 22 miles away.

I did see in Ruv News today that thieves are now stealing batteries from scientists remote monitoring stations, this are the stations that monitor volcanoes, earthquake activity, GPS data and more. Watch the Shockwave of an Explosion at Mexico’s Popocatepetl

... These domes occasionally collapse or are destroyed by explosions that can lessen the pressure on the magma beneath to create an even large explosion. This is akin to popping the top off a shaken bottle of soda — the dissolved bubbles come out of solution rapidly as the pressure is released and you get an explosion of soda.

Today, Popocatepetl had one of those explosions and thanks to the beautiful weather in Mexico and some nice placement of webcams surrounding the volcano, the explosion was caught on some pretty amazing webcam footage compiled by webcamsdemexico (see above). The video is short, only 30 second long, but after the first few seconds of calm, the explosion occurs, sending a dark grey plume into the atmosphere above the volcano. Now, these explosions come with a lot of force, and you can see after the initial explosion is how the clouds of water vapor around Popocatepetl shudder as the explosion front moves past. Then quickly, the upper flanks of the volcano turn grey from the rapid raining out of ash and volcanic debris (tephra). It is a little surprising how little the clouds actually care that the explosion just occurred at first, but as the explosion continues in this sped up video, the clouds do begin to show more disruption from the hot ash and volcanic gases being released during the explosion...

that must have been pretty loud! I wonder if there are infrasound records of this?

I’m sure there are. They can be noticed thousands of km away.

June 18 11:00 h (June 18, 16:00 GMT)

The monitoring system of Popocatepetl volcano recorded an explosion yesterday at 13:23 h which generated an eruption column of ash of more than 4 km in height and incandescent fragments released at distances up to 2 km from the crater, which by its high temperature caused small fires in the grasslands (see image 1), (see image 2). There were reports of ashfall in Tetela del Volcán, Ocuituco, Yecapixtla, Atlatlahucan, Cuautla, Tlayacapan, Yautepec, Jiutepec y Xochitepec in state of Morelos. Also in Ecatzingo, Atlautla y Ozumba in state of México.

In addition to this event, there were 144 exhalations of low and moderate intensity in the last 24 h, which were accompanied by the emission of steam, gas and ash occasionally. The most important were presented yesterday at 16:25 h (see image 3), 17:06 h (see image 4), and 22:40 h in which had not visibility...
