Ground monitoring equipment is deployed on two Ethiopian volcanoes showing signs of unrest

Images taken from space have indicated that some of the world’s unmonitored volcanoes may not be as peaceful as we might like to think. Satellite radar has shown that the surfaces of a number of volcanoes within the East African Rift are deforming – inflating and deflating.

“Deformations such as these are typically attributed to magma accumulating and moving underground,” said Dr Juliet Biggs, Lecturer in the School of Earth Sciences at the University of Bristol, “and are often interpreted as pre-eruptive activity. So, we’re very curious to find out what’s causing this unrest.”
To understand the geophysical processes behind the deformation signals, Biggs placed ground-based GPS monitoring equipment on two of the volcanoes within the rift – Alutu and Corbetti.

“Alutu and Corbetti had the biggest deformation signals,” said Biggs. “This was surprising as they haven’t been studied very much. There’s no monitoring and no background information regarding historical eruptions.”...

CVGHM reported that during May through 6 June white-to-gray plumes rose 200-450 m above Ibu's crater rim. Seismicity increased and volcanic tremor was detected. The lava dome contained to grow, especially the N part, and in early June had grown taller than the N crater rim. Based on visual and instrumental observations, as well as the hazard potential, CVGHM increased the Alert Level to 3 (on a scale of 1-4) on 7 June. The public was warned to stay at least 3 km away from the active crater.

The monitoring system of Popocatepetl volcano recorded an explosion yesterday at 14:48 h which generated an eruption column of ash of 2 km in height and incandescent fragments released at approximate distance of 100 meters from the crater rim (see image 1). The eruptive column reached 2 km in height and was dispersed by the wind to the northwest.

The level of seismicity now is comparable to the strongest seismic activity detected during the earlier part of the 2013 eruption on May 16-17. The seismicity is characterized by intense, continuous tremor and intermittent small explosions that are likely associated with lava fountaining and ash production.
Satellite data and pilot reports indicate a distinct plume extending to the west from the volcano at least and rising as high as 27,000 to 28,000 feet above sea level. Strong thermal signals at the summit have been evident in satellite imagery. This morning, AVO received a report of trace ash fall on the community of King Cove about 30 miles southwest of the volcano.
At this level of unrest it is likely that lava fountaining and ash emission are occurring. Lava fountaining is likely producing spatter-fed lava flows that are descending the flanks of the volcano over ice and snow and could be producing substantial steam plumes. These plumes probably contain variable amounts of ash. At the level of unrest observed over the past 11-12 hours, the volcanic plume has not been particularly ash rich; however, this could change if the character of the eruption changes and it remains possible for more robust ash plumes to be generated at any time.

AERB studying undersea volcano near Kalpakkam in Tamil Nadu

CHENNAI: The Atomic Energy Regulatory Board (AERB) has begun a detailed study to analyze the possible threats of an underwater volcano near the Madras Atomic Power Station (MAPS) in Kalpakkam, about 70km south of Chennai.
Confirming the presence of an underwater volcano five weeks ago, an AERB reply to an RTI query said the Geological Survey of India (GSI) has also recommended an advanced study to figure out the status of the volcano, though initial investigations did not detect any significant geological signs....
According to GVP, a US government agency based in Washington DC studying active volcanoes and their eruptions during the last 10,000 years, says the undersea eruption of the volcano happened last on January 20, 1757, off Puducherry, resulting in the formation of a new island. However, AERB said GSI's offshore surveys did not find any existence of an island. Also, it added that the seismic data and wells drilled by ONGC in the vicinity did not indicate any volcanic intrusions.
In last September, V Pughazhendi and R Ramesh, two activists of the Peoples Movement for Nuclear Radiation Safety, who published a book compiling the documentary evidences of the volcano, demanded that the AERB conducts an advanced study. The AERB study is in progress and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) insists countries should ensure safety and protection if they had built reactors without considering the effect of volcanoes in their vicinity.
Besides two power plants in Kalpakkam, a senior AERB official said, a fast breeder test reactor facility and a fuel reprocessing facility are in the vicinity. A 500MW prototype fast breeder is also being built at Kalpakkam.

Reinvigorated Eruption at Pavlof Disrupts Air Traffic

The seismicity at Pavlof over the last 48 hours has been the most intense since the volcano rumbled back to like over almost two months ago, supporting the idea that the eruption has been reinvigorated into a new explosive phase. Ash fall has also been reported in communities to the southwest of Pavlof, including King Cove, 48 km (30 miles) distant...
AVO posted some great backscatter electron microscope images of the ash collected from the earlier explosive activity from Pavlof (see below). These images show the mix of cuspate volcanic glass shards (ash) and some more rounded spatter (see middle of image below). The cuspate shape of the ash is due to the bursting bubbles that drove the explosive eruption, where the ash are the former parts of bubble walls, fragmented during the violent explosive. Some of the spatter is likely pieces of lava thrown violently out of the vent during the lava fountaining during the opening days of the eruption:

Volcanic tremor continues to be detected in seismic data indicating that the eruption of Veniaminof Volcano continues. Satellite images obtained over the past 24 hours show elevated surface temperatures at the intracaldera cone. Web camera images from Perryville show a small light-colored plume rising above the intracaldera cone to just above the rim of the caldera at about 8,200 feet above sea level.

It is possible for activity at Veniaminof Volcano to increase above its current level at any time and more vigorous ash emissions may result. Sustained periods of volcanic tremor may correspond with continuous ash emission which may not be detected in satellite data, especially if ash plumes remain below 15,000 to 20,000 feet above sea level...

A brutal and potentially historic heat wave is in store for the West as parts of Nevada, Arizona and California may get dangerously hot temperatures this weekend and into next week. In fact, by the end of the heat wave, we may see a record tied or broken for the hottest temperature ever recorded on Earth.
