Not a mountain man.
He is a vagrant thief living in the woods.

If you steal everything you need not hard, but he would make it if he had to live off the land. Few people these days could long term.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 10604530

call him what you like this guy knows his shit about the outdoors.
 Quoting: thetrickybigguy

Debatable.

He certainly has some outdoors skills but not at a mountain man level. You could probably put any X military/marine or hard core outdoorsman in that same situation and they would do fine as long as they could steal everything they needed.

What I have to wonder about is boredom. We have a lot of distractions in modern day life that he does not have.

He is probably a fugitive from justice.

Yeah. his ability to steal goods from vacant houses is sooo impressive.

Re: Mountain man scares owners of remote Utah cabins, leaves note warning, 'Get off my mountain'
He isn't stealing from the poor. If these people can afford a cabin with hot tubs and luxuries they can afford to give a guy some food. They didn't say anything about him stealing expensive items, just food, or vandalizing anything.

One guy breaking into cabins and stealing food and booze is nothing compared to what bankers, real estate investors, attorneys etc. get away with every day. You can steal more with a briefcase than you can with a gun. And this guy's using neither. The guys with suits and ties are ruining whole families lives with the games they play. MUCH bigger thieves in my book.

But stealing is stealing and it's against the law. That can't be argued. He'll either get caught and pay for his crimes, or disappear. And all the while the people who steal legally will continue to screw their victims out of everything they've worked their whole lives for. Which is probably what the people that own those cabins, that they only see for a month or two out of the year did to get those places.

I agree, it is wrong. But from a moral standpoint, it's pretty low on the scale. I live (temporarily!!!) in an area where 2/3's of the houses are empty for 9 or 10 months out of the year. The rest of the time they're in one of their other houses from New York to Colorado to the Caribbean. Their air conditioners and heaters and swimming pool filters are running year round wasting energy resources.

I so hate the lily white suburbs and I'm counting the days till Mom gets better and I can escape this fantasy world and get back to what's real.

breaking into remote cabins in winter, living in luxury off hot food, alcohol and coffee before stealing provisions and vanishing into the woods.

A homeless guy that breaks into houses is a theif no matter where he resides.

The real story is that they have been trying to find this guy for years and he is skilled enough to evade all the police and rangers looking for him. That takes some skill.

Hey Brief, I have a fabulous idea. How about you go up there and find the guy.

Just think about it, you'll be up there in the fresh mountain air, birds chirping away, and surrounded by nature as you so stealthfully track this guy down and plug him.

Just go do it... please?

I never stole anything in my life, outside of a keg of beer when I was 18 or so.

And the cabin owners don't "own" the mountain either. If I DID own a vacation cabin in the mountains I'd probably stock the fridge and liquor cabinet and leave him a note telling him to enjoy himself, just please don't burn the place down or break anything. Just think about it. His presence might be stopping other thieves who'll break in and rob and trash everything. Some food and booze is a small price to pay for a 24 hour a day human security system.

Actually, he appears to be a lost OWS protester.

They've found abandoned camps, dozens of guns, high-end outdoor gear stolen from the homes and trash strewn around the forest floor.

Lately he has been leaving the cabins in disarray and riddled with bullets after defacing religious icons,
