The tree in that story represents knowledge; understanding how the reality works, who "you" really are, and so on. That's what Lucifer has been offering the humanity for a long time.

The information hasn't been let out however, but instead the knowledge of how things actually are has been kept secret within a fairly small circle of people and others.

The information has not been used for good of the mankind, instead it has been kept from the humanity in order to be able to control them through various lies and illusions.

Picking the good fruit means the humanity must wake up to what the nature of this "reality" actually is, then make conscious decisions about how to proceed from there on.

Just ask your self, what is "God", Is it the entity, discribed in the Bible or is he something completely different. Does a "God" need an army of millions of angels ?
Does a "God" needs to be worshipped and given sacrifices to?
Many things in the Bible doesn't compute with me what I think a real "God" must be.
