The answer is obvious people..This land is obviously extremely rich in oil, however in America we have much more stringent environmental regulations then Russia does. We are basically giving this land up to Russia so they can rape the land of its Oil and sell it back to us at a premium..WIN-WIN Right?? WRONG! We are just making the oil traders more powerful and destroying some of the most beautiful land in the process. Not only that I doubt this would really ever lower gas prices enough to make any noticeable difference anyways...Obama should know how the Axis action of appeasement went against Germany/Hitler in WW2...Very Badly!hidingabomb

Repsol well blowout still not under control
Alaska Dispatch | Feb 20, 2012

Crews are still working to control an oil and gas well in Alaska's Arctic oil fields after a blowout last week.

On Wednesday, Repsol, a Madrid-based oil major starting its first winter of exploratory drilling in Alaska, apparently hit a "shallow-gas hazard," or a pocket of high-pressure gas. No oil was spilled, workers were evacuated safely, and the rig was quickly shut down to avoid ignition.

The well ceased flowing at about 9 p.m. Thursday, but preparations to bring the well under control "are ongoing," according to the Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation.

and at the same time the same Company (Repsol) is drilling in the GOM

U.S. Watches Closely As Oil Drilling Begins Off Cuba

There are big plans for oil exploration in the Caribbean, not far off the coast of Florida. A Spanish company recently began drilling in Cuban waters — just 55 miles from Key West.

The well is the first of several exploratory wells planned in Cuba and the Bahamas. The drilling has officials and researchers in Florida scrambling to make plans for how they'll respond in case of a spill.

The U.S. currently doesn't allow any drilling for oil off its Atlantic coast or in the eastern Gulf of Mexico. One reason is what's at stake. Florida's tourism-based economy depends on its beaches, fishing and clear Caribbean water.

edit to add: I think they are drilling in the GOM and NOT on the other side of Cuba as the article above states

It's amazing how people forget...

This issue has popped up before on GLP. The islands in question have been under Russian rule since czarist times. Some have claimed that the treaty in which the US bought Alaska may have included these islands since they hadn't been fully mapped and explored at the time.

In subsequent years, the islands were explored by various nations, including the US, Russia, Canada, British, and some Scandinavian countries. Geographically speaking, they're off the coast of Russia, not in proximity to Alaska.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not an Obama fan, I don't think the Russians are or ever will be our friends, and I'd go ballistic if solid American territory was ceded.

HOWEVER, do some research before getting emotional. My call for logic is NOT an endorsement of Obama, just a desire to see the facts presented, not emotion and disinformation.

AC, your points along with others is valid. In a differant world, a differant time, maybey such ceding of assests would be a reasonable accomadation towards relations. The timing of this, and the true strategic and resource loss is much harder to understand.

Russia has failed to sign the treaty that defines the boundries which indeed would grant these islands to their control. A full reading of the treaty is in order for me. I wonder why the lack of commitment on their part. If my memory serves me correctly, is there not ongoing disputes concerning fishing and clear understanding of who can be where?

Like you I am no supporter of obama. His actions continue to defy rational logic. What does he stand to gain from doing this? Why do it now?

The point that they are closer to Russia and not ours....Obviously if we can give them away, we must feel some level of ownership. Could this form of reasoning stretch so far as to say Cuba should be ours? Hmmmm, what nation is the closest to Hawaii?

Sorry, I can not simply dismiss this as "normal" and not worthy of watching.

Which OPEC member could benefit hugely from Cuba's nascent offshore oil industry?

Venezuela.

As Cuba starts its first offshore drilling and foreign companies eye more prospects, the Latin American republic led by President Hugo Chavez may be among the biggest winners.

Other than the possible oil, who would want the SOBs anyway? They are a lot closer to Russia than Alaska and in the ARCTIC OCEAN! I spent some time at Prudhoe on the edge of that bitch, and except for the oil wouldn't give you 2 cents for that place. What I have seen of Wrangle is that it is a great home for polar bears[when I was at Prudhoe Bay a chopper would make regular rounds of the area makeing sure that the bears were not comeing thru the perimeter to EAT us]

I don't know if this thread is still active. Thank you for responding to my post, OP.

This isn't the first time a story of the USA allegedly ceding islands to Russia has been presented. Even before Obama, from time to time this story would come up. It's like a urban legend of sorts.

For more information, see [link to en.wikipedia.org] or [link to en.wikipedia.org] to learn about some of these islands and see where they're located.

The Aleutian Islands, for instance, are solidly and unquestionably American. Big Diomede in the Bering Strait is indisputably Russian, and Little Diomede is definitely American. If any of these islands changed hands, it would be a major issue of land swapping.

The case you're presenting, however, is about a group of islands which were never under American rule or perceived to be part of the US, though several expeditions through the Arctic tried to claim them. There's no map that I can find from the past 100 years that displays these islands as being anything other than Russian.

So talks of Cuba and Hawaii regarding location are moot. My mentioning their proximity to Russia was to help people try to understand where the islands in question were located, as I doubt most people here would be able to find them on the map.

In fact, I bet some of the people reading this thing we're talking about the Aleutian Islands. Though the farthest of those may be closer to Russia, they are solidly American, part of Alaska, no dispute. However, the islands in your post, that are allegedly being ceded are, and have always been, on the Russian side.

Again, not standing up for Russia or Obama, just saying, this Urban Legend/Internet Rumor isn't new and predates the Obama Administration.

When I first heard a similar rumor, about 4 years ago, I had the same emotional reaction as you, OP, which would be valid IF this were true. But then I researched it.

Get over your over-imaginative, conspiracy/racist, communist-under-every-bush selves, willy a?

bsflag

Even a modicum of research dispels this time-worn fallacy!

This perennial rumor resurfaced back with Bush, Sr. (1990), and again with Clinton (2000), and stretched further back through the decades.

Try a cursory glance at Wikipedia or research ANY of the islands in question, and you'll find most all have Russian ownership origins -some as far back as 1764 and are included in a federally protected nature sanctuary administered by Russia's Ministry of Natural Resources (classified as a "Zapovednik" - a "strict nature reserve") - that, as such, receive the highest level of protection, and excludes practically all human activity other than for scientific purposes.

The Russian government extended the marine protected area out to 24 nautical miles in 1999, and as of 2003, there were four rangers who reside on the island year-round.. in addition to a dozen or so scientists who conduct research during the summer months.

***************

From Wikipedia - [link to en.wikipedia.org]

***************

"According to some US individuals, including the group State Department Watch, eight Arctic islands currently controlled by Russia, including Wrangel Island, are claimed by the United States. However, according to the United States Department of State no such claim exists. The USSR/USA Maritime Boundary Treaty, which has yet to be approved by the Russian Duma, does not specifically address the status of these islands nor the maritime boundaries associated with them."

"On June 1, 1990, Secretary of State James Baker signed an executive agreement with Eduard Shevardnadze, the former U.S.S.R. foreign minister. It specified that even though the treaty had not been ratified, the U.S. and the U.S.S.R. agreed to abide by the terms of the treaty beginning June 15, 1990. According to State Department Watch, neither the public nor Congress were informed of this executive agreement during the period leading up to the ratification vote. The Senate ratified the U.S.-U.S.S.R. Maritime Boundary Treaty in 1991, which was then signed by President George Bush."

*****************

Guess this "issue" was laid to rest about two decades ago but Bush, Sr.... until Joe Miller decided to resurrect yet another "non-issue" to gain personal notoriety... and I see Ron Paul has seen fit to tacitly endorse it's volatile presence on his "Daily Paul" website - from whence a plethora of extremist wasp-nests have propagated this falsehood ad nauseum....

Let's all make an effort to argue from a factual standpoint, and not fabricate issues that don't exist?

God knows we have enough legitimate concerns facing us these days....
