Carl Sagan and his take on Atheism.
An atheist has to know a lot more than I know. An atheist is someone who knows there is no god. By some definitions atheism is very stupid.

One of the saddest lessons of history is this: If we've been bamboozled long enough, we tend to reject any evidence of the bamboozle. We're no longer interested in finding out the truth. The bamboozle has captured us. it is simply too painful to acknowledge -- even to ourselves -- that we've been so credulous. (So the old bamboozles tend to persist as the new bamboozles rise.) Anything you don't understand, Mr. Rankin, you attribute to God. God for you is where you sweep away all the mysteries of the world, all the challenges to our intelligence. You simply turn your mind off and say God did it. [Dr. Arroway in Carl Sagan's Contact (New York: Pocket Books, 1985), p. 166.]
 Quoting: Carl Sagan

Funny, this man is so convinced of life on other planets (although he is dead since 96'). Yet his first episode of the Cosmos states the earth as a 'modest humble planet' and "why was it chosen to have life out of all of the billions of other planets".

Even when the obvious stares these fanatics in the face, they wail, deny and vilify with buzz words to distract and bamboozle.

Indeed, I am of the opinion that science has no more liberated man then religion or government, all were tools once used for righteous cause, but now, merely a tool for the will of the elect.

Get it straight OP...

An atheist is not someone who knows there is no god.

An atheist is someone who just chooses not to believe in one.

They're indifferent.

I'm an atheist, but I don't presume to be smarter than everyone who practices a particular religion.

I just choose not to engage in it, and honestly, don't care.

I have bigger concerns in my life than to care about gods/goddesses and the man made religions based around them.

Read the title Sir, this is Carl Sagans take on atheism, not mine.

Well then I disagree with Carl Sagan.

I still like his books though.

Indeed, going through his comments through history, I don't believe the man really knew how he felt. One moment he seems to lean towards Einsteins idea of that God is manifested through the universal laws that we must abide by. This, to me seems logical, but does not address the purpose of intent on the subject matter of life being so diverse here and being so scarce else where.

More importantly, though reading through some of his material, he comes off fairly agnostic, to a t.

What I'm saying is, if God wanted to send us a message, and ancient writings were the only way he could think of doing it, he could have done a better job. [Dr. Arroway in Carl Sagan's Contact (New York: Pocket Books, 1985), p. 164.]
 Quoting: Carl Sagan

I mean right there, what a straw man. What because of the medium used to transfer information repudiates the message behind the Bible?

Again, I am not a bible thumping individual, to me religion and spiritual pursuit is personal and not one soul should affect anothers pursuit in regards to this.

But to deny the intelligent design behind the subtle system in which we find ourselves living, is a staggering thing to comprehend. To chalk it up to the big bang and a random amount of this and that created life, with the assistance of evolution is just as outlandish as considering a creative force having something to do with it.

To me, each is merely one side of the same coin.

Carl Sagan is an idiot. Look at the fruits of his labor. Stephen Hawking. Known as the smartest man in the world, the retard can't even talk or move.

This is the problem with labels. People have different interpretations for the same word.

To some (and this was my understanding), atheism is the firm belief that God/deities do not exist.

It sounds as though this description does not match your interpretation of the concept.

You sound more like a nihilist to me. fwiw

Re: Carl Sagan and his take on Atheism.
I'm not even going to read the thread because I can already imagine the vile comments by the atheists. However, I don't think atheists are stupid and I respect their opinion and beliefs just like I respect the beliefs of other religions. That being said, what I don't approve of is the hatred and intolerance by the atheist leftists. I also disapprove of their double-standard; they'll bash Christian's all day and generally that is exactly who they go after but they don't have the balls to stand up to Muslim's, Hindu's or others.

You simply won't see a bunch of atheists march in front of a Mosque or other non-Christian house of worship like they will against Christians.

What it comes down to is, I don't really care about what others believe in or don't believe in, just leave me alone. And quit with the bullshit, "I'm offended by the Ten Commandments". If you are really that easily offended then you have problems going much deeper than religion. You need some "wall to wall counselling".
I only believe half of what I read and even half of that is bullshit.
