Do some research and reading up on the various levels of sleep, including REM sleep - that level where you dream. I remember reading that you're supposed to progress down through various levels of relaxed brain activity before REM kicks in. If for some reason you immediately go to the REM level, the body will "jolt" itself back. It's happened to me before. And it is a perfectly normal response.

But it sounds like you're letting these episodes give you anxiety, which leads to insomnia.

Also watch what you eat and drink one hour before you go to bed. Some foods and liquids are stimulants, which you also do not want.

Your analysis of the different stages of sleep really makes sense! It also makes me wonder if I really should do a sleep study! Hmmmm...I'm so glad I found this thread. Op, how long has this been going on?

when i was an alcoholic it happened all the time when i wasnt drunk... but ive been sober for 3 months and it just started happening again like 3 days ago.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 11301754

Hmmm...so drinking before bed kept this at bay then? That's dangerously tempting lol. Maybe just one glass of red wine? They say it's good for you if you drink it with moderation. Maybe if I only did it a few nights to try and break this cycle? Ya got me thinking anyways...

The feeling of nausea and severe heart pounding are brought on by the body and the "spirit" trying to become of one vibrational field.

They need to resonate with each other to be in "tune."

The body reacts the only way it knows how.

Now you know how to react differently.
 Quoting: Jammer

Thank you for your help. I can't tell you how happy I was to find this thread and the OP's post! I've felt so alone for so long. Does this happen to you too? How do you know so much about it and how do I know how to react differently. How do I make this stop?
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 8866065

Understand what it is.

This has and does happen to me, and I believe it more common than is recognized.

I know because of the times I remembered leaving my body.

You have to make the mind completely blank, at this point you can escape your physical being.

But are you sure you want to?

You might know the truth then.

I didn't forget, each time more conscience of "myself."

Once you know what it is, you can become aware of what you and your body are doing.

YOU can change any aspect of it that you want to.

That is up to you.

But you already knew this.
 Quoting: Jammer

My OBE's aren't like the normal ones you hear about people looking down at their sleeping form and knowing that's their body. Mine are more like a deep awareness that I'm there but I'm not. I know that doesn't make sense, but as soon as I start to drift off, I get sleep paralysis. I'm using common terms here, because I've done tons of research into all of this. Then I hear strange voices that are not frightening in and of themselves, often I can't understand what's being said, and yet they terrify the hell out of me. I see my room, but I see it differently than what it is. I sense "things" all around me, beings?? Often the voices take on a menacing quality to them and I become more and more terrified. I try to wake up. I try to move even a finger or a toe to break whatever hold this is on me. I don't like this place/state I'm in one bit!

Op...I apologize if I'm deviating from this thread, but I have suffered from these things for sooo long and I'm really needing answers as well.

It's actually a seizure.

But it's not serious.

My daughter has epilepsy. That's how I know about it.

its right at the moment of going from being awake to going to sleep.. it feels like an electric shock or some shit, like someone is shocking me with those heart paddle things , you know when the say CLEAR , then POW , thats what it feels like..

This is becoming very god damn frustrating as i have shit i have to do here in a few hours..

Anybody know what this is . what causes it . or how to treat it ?

Its good knowing one is not alone. This has happened to me as long as I can remember and I dont do caffein or alcohol. Sometimes I need an hour or more to go to sleep after each occurence. The main adverse effect is reduction in sleep quality. I will be on the watch out for a possible solution as this thread progresses.

that said i get the jolting feeling as well. sometimes i feel like i just fell asleep literally seconds before it happens.
i take zoloft and other VA prescribed medications. i do not drink at all.

i have no clue what it is; cant even speculate. but OP did you have time overseas in combat?

You are trying to leave your body and it scares you.

That is like the feeling of falling.

You then jump back in and the whole event scares you.

Listen, most everyone has had this it's called Hypnic Jerk

[link to en.wikipedia.org]

According to the American Academy of Sleep Medicine there are a wide range of potential causes, including: anxiety, caffeine, stress, and strenuous activities in the evening.[4] This strange falling sensation and muscle twitch is known as a hypnagogic myoclonic twitch or "Hypnic jerk". Close to 70 percent of all people experience this phenomenon just after nodding off, according to a recent study at the Mayo Clinic.

Most experts agree that this is a natural part of the sleeping process, much like slower breathing and a reduced heartbeat. The occurrence is well known and has been well documented. However, experts are still not completely sure why the body does this. The consensus among researchers is that, as the muscles begin to slack and go into a restful state as sleep is entered, the brain senses these relaxation signals and misinterprets them as indications of falling. The brain then sends signals to arm and leg muscles in an attempt to regain balance. This misinterpretation that takes place in the brain may also be responsible for the "falling" dreams that accompany the falling sensation. These "dreams" are not really normal dreams, as they are not produced from REM sleep, but rather more like a daydream or hallucination in response to the body’s sensations.

Do you hear an explosion or see a flash of light? The reason I ask is because this sounds a lot like something weird I experienced in 2009 called "Exploding Head Syndrome", mine started off exactly as you described for the first week or so, then I started hearing a terrible explosion, after about two weeks I started experiencing it while awake, but look into it!

Yes OP, I know this feeling. It's has happened to me on numerous occasions.

My only theory is your astral body is suddenly slammed back into your physical body at the moment of deep sleep. I think it's a common occurrence.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 10557636

This is correct.

One leaves their body during sleep; the astral body is connected to the physical body via a tether of sorts (the 'silver cord' as described in scripture). When the astral body re-enters the physical body, it causes the 'jolt' and sensation precisely and you describe.
