Volcanoes of Kamchatka: ORANGE code And you know, how often there there are earthquakes like this ? That is to magnitude more than 4 and depth of epicenter less than 5 kilometers? I think that precisely DON'T KNOW: over the last 7 years there ONLY ONE in May, 2005! Can check up it, follow the link [link to www.emsc-csem.org] and set search Depth (in kms) Min Max 5 Magnitude Min 4 Max Region Name HAWAII REGION, HAWAII So this event is far not the ordinary Tramp |

Volcanoes of Kamchatka: ORANGE code [link to volcanoes.usgs.gov] Past 24 hours at Kilauea summit: The Ka`oiki seismic swarm continued about 5 km (3 mi) northwest of Halema`uma`u Crater with increased activity overnight that included two magnitude-4+ earthquakes occurring amongst more than 70 additional earthquakes in the past 24 hours. Seventy-eight earthquakes were strong enough to be located beneath Kilauea in the past day: 74 quakes were related to the earthquake swarm, two were within the upper east rift zone, and two were on south flank faults. Past 24 hours at the middle east rift zone vents: At Pu`u `O`o, incandescence was visible at sources on the upper part of the tube system on Pu`u `O`o's east flank; unfortunately, our cameras viewing Pu`u `O`o crater are not working and we hope to be able to return them to functionality during today's overflight work. Seismic tremor levels near Pu`u `O`o were low. The tiltmeter on the north flank of Pu`u `O`o cone recorded the probable start of DI inflation by 9 am yesterday. GPS receivers on opposite sides of the cone continued to show neither extension nor contraction. The most recent (preliminary) sulfur dioxide emission rate measurement was 600 tonnes/day on February 17, 2012, from all east rift zone sources. Webcam and satellite images indicate that active lava flows are high on the pali and scattered across the upper and middle portions of the abandoned Royal Gardens subdivision. The leading edge of the flows are about 7.5 km (4 mi) southeast of Pu`u `O`o. The active flows have been reported visible from the County Viewing Area in Kalapana. |

Volcanoes of Kamchatka: ORANGE code History of Hawaii's biggest quakes over last 40 years [link to earthquaketrack.com] Of importance to note is that the 1974 7+ EQ caused a rift to occure on the Big Island and about 1/3 of that island partially separated from the rest of the island, with a couple of hundred(??) acres actually ending up under water. Underwater work around the Hawaian Islands indicates that over time large chunks of the islands "fall off" the mountain top (the islands are 20,000' or so above the sea floor bed) and collapse into the sea in long run out landslides. Such large collapses are believed to have repeatedly created Pacific wide MEGA Tsunami's, though the timing between each of those events is measured in the 10's of thousands of years, not hundreds or thousands of years. (there is geological evidence that easten Australia has been hit with mega tsunami's with a height of several hundred feet) imo ANY major EQ (say above 7??) in Hawaii has to potential for triggering such a collapse, but the little ones (6 or below) would probably have an extremely low probability of doing so) |

But, they are concerned about a big one causing the shelf to break off. We would have a 45 minute warning to head to higher ground here on Kauai if that were to happen. The thing is, even this is not pole shifting, earth changing doom - it's a perfectly normal process and how the Hawaiian islands have been being formed over the eons. “If we are peaceful, if we are happy, we can smile and blossom like a flower, and everyone in our family, our entire society, will benefit from our peace.” Thich Nhat Hanh, Being Peace "But ask the animals, and they will teach you, or the birds in the sky, and they will tell you; or speak to the earth, and it will teach you, or let the fish in the sea inform you." - Job 12:7,8 revstargazer (at) hotmail.com |

And a guy named Pirate that apparently knows what it's like to throw dynamite in a cesspool! ![]() Really great, I like it too! But all the same I will add a little bit on a theme [link to volcanoes.usgs.gov] Past 24 hours at Kilauea summit: The Ka`oiki seismic swarm continued about 5 km (3 mi) northwest of Halema`uma`u Crater with more than 180 earthquakes since early Wednesday morning. Seventy-four earthquakes were strong enough to be located beneath Kilauea in the past day: 60 quakes were related to the earthquake swarm, two were beneath the summit area, three within the southwest rift zone, two were within the upper east rift zone, and seven were on south flank faults. There have been no changes in the eruption related to the Ka`oiki seismic swarm. DI inflation and the rise of the lava lake continued overnight; a 2-3 hour-long lava high stand started at about 4 pm yesterday. Since mid-October 2011, the summit GPS network recorded continued weak extension. Seismic tremor levels were low. The most recent (preliminary) sulfur dioxide emission rate measurement was 850 tonnes/day on February 22, 2012. Past 24 hours at the middle east rift zone vents: Within Pu`u `O`o crater, HVO geologists on yesterday's overflight described the northeast source as a small cone that ejected spatter episodically and the southeast source as a fuming; overnight, the northeast source continued vigorous spattering and the southeast source came alive and issued a lava flow toward the northeast source and to the west between 9:45 and 10:30 pm last night; the public Webcams viewing Pu`u `O`o crater will be out of operation for a few weeks. Incandescence was visible at sources on the upper part of the tube system on Pu`u `O`o's east flank. Seismic tremor levels near Pu`u `O`o were low. The tiltmeter on the north flank of Pu`u `O`o cone recorded continued DI inflation with a brief deflation at the time of the above-mentioned crater lava flow. GPS receivers on opposite sides of the cone continued to show neither extension nor contraction. The most recent (preliminary) sulfur dioxide emission rate measurement was 600 tonnes/day on February 17, 2012, from all east rift zone sources. HVO geologists reported that the flow was advancing in two lobes: the east lobe was advancing along the east margin of the December flows and had reached the 900-ft elevation; the west lobe had advanced along the western margin of earlier flows and, yesterday morning, was crossing a 1980s `a`a flow to about the 1500-ft elevation at about the upper boundary of the abandoned Royal Gardense subdivision. Webcam and satellite images indicate that the lava flows continued to be active on the pali overnight. The leading edge of the flows are about 7.5 km (4 mi) southeast of Pu`u `O`o. There are no active flows on the coastal plain or entering the ocean. |
