Fredericton here.

Toronto is pretty awesome, but dirty lol
I miss Halifax.
I think I am moving to British Columbia next. I have never been on the west coast. No jobs in NS.
 Quoting: Kaylee

Stay away from BC. Too much radiation from Fukushima. The fish are now toxic. No jobs in NS? Hmmm lots here in Freddy. We are in a construction boom.

I am indeed freaked out by the fukushima stuff. And earthquakes.

First of all internet and phone are not basic necessities. Got cable? Drop that too. My parents both had to work to raise me. If you can't make it on one income you may need to get a job and put the kids into the dreaded public school system. Either that or homeschool and work part time.

I really don't think public school is so terrible in preparing kids for life, but that's another topic for another day.

Re: Worried about feeding my family!
my hubby works and I homeschool our three kids. We can't manage two incomes and homeschool....but there is no option. I started "couponing" to try and save money. So far I do well at it and usually can cut our grocery bills by at least 30%. I really wish we had a place for a garden but we are stuck in an apartment. Lost our house two years ago when the hubby was laid off by General Motors. We have lost 40k a year in the past few years.

Have Faith in God and Live.

I have been young, and now am old; yet have I not seen the righteous forsaken, nor his seed begging bread.

Psalm 37 >>
King James Version

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
1<<A Psalm of David.>> Fret not thyself because of evildoers, neither be thou envious against the workers of iniquity.
2For they shall soon be cut down like the grass, and wither as the green herb.

3Trust in the LORD, and do good; so shalt thou dwell in the land, and verily thou shalt be fed.

4Delight thyself also in the LORD; and he shall give thee the desires of thine heart.

5Commit thy way unto the LORD; trust also in him; and he shall bring it to pass.

6And he shall bring forth thy righteousness as the light, and thy judgment as the noonday.

7Rest in the LORD, and wait patiently for him: fret not thyself because of him who prospereth in his way, because of the man who bringeth wicked devices to pass.

8Cease from anger, and forsake wrath: fret not thyself in any wise to do evil.

9For evildoers shall be cut off: but those that wait upon the LORD, they shall inherit the earth.

10For yet a little while, and the wicked shall not be: yea, thou shalt diligently consider his place, and it shall not be.

11But the meek shall inherit the earth; and shall delight themselves in the abundance of peace.

12The wicked plotteth against the just, and gnasheth upon him with his teeth.

13The Lord shall laugh at him: for he seeth that his day is coming.

14The wicked have drawn out the sword, and have bent their bow, to cast down the poor and needy, and to slay such as be of upright conversation.

15Their sword shall enter into their own heart, and their bows shall be broken.

16A little that a righteous man hath is better than the riches of many wicked.

17For the arms of the wicked shall be broken: but the LORD upholdeth the righteous.

18The LORD knoweth the days of the upright: and their inheritance shall be for ever.

19They shall not be ashamed in the evil time: and in the days of famine they shall be satisfied.

20But the wicked shall perish, and the enemies of the LORD shall be as the fat of lambs: they shall consume; into smoke shall they consume away.

21The wicked borroweth, and payeth not again: but the righteous sheweth mercy, and giveth.

22For such as be blessed of him shall inherit the earth; and they that be cursed of him shall be cut off.

23The steps of a good man are ordered by the LORD: and he delighteth in his way.

24Though he fall, he shall not be utterly cast down: for the LORD upholdeth him with his hand.

25I have been young, and now am old; yet have I not seen the righteous forsaken, nor his seed begging bread.

26He is ever merciful, and lendeth; and his seed is blessed.

27Depart from evil, and do good; and dwell for evermore.

28For the LORD loveth judgment, and forsaketh not his saints; they are preserved for ever: but the seed of the wicked shall be cut off.

29The righteous shall inherit the land, and dwell therein for ever.

30The mouth of the righteous speaketh wisdom, and his tongue talketh of judgment.

31The law of his God is in his heart; none of his steps shall slide.

32The wicked watcheth the righteous, and seeketh to slay him.

33The LORD will not leave him in his hand, nor condemn him when he is judged.

34Wait on the LORD, and keep his way, and he shall exalt thee to inherit the land: when the wicked are cut off, thou shalt see it.

35I have seen the wicked in great power, and spreading himself like a green bay tree.

36Yet he passed away, and, lo, he was not: yea, I sought him, but he could not be found.

37Mark the perfect man, and behold the upright: for the end of that man is peace.

38But the transgressors shall be destroyed together: the end of the wicked shall be cut off.

39But the salvation of the righteous is of the LORD: he is their strength in the time of trouble.

40And the LORD shall help them, and deliver them: he shall deliver them from the wicked, and save them, because they trust in him.

Assuming you have a webcam, put an ad on Craigslist in Seoul, Korea and major cities in Japan( even China and Germany). Offer 1 hour of English free coversation for X$. Should be no problem to make a minimum of $15-20 per hour. Make sure you say you are a home school teacher, etc. teach an hour or two per evening or morning.

Another option. Take half the time you post on forums and use it to write about your home school experience. Put the pros and cons, challenges, benefits etc. and type it up. Convert it to a Kindle file and upload it to Amazon. With so many people homeschooling these days it could bring in some extra money each month. Even if you charged as little as a 2.99 per copy it is all extra.

There are lots of ways to make extra income.

Good Luck

Re: Worried about feeding my family!
lots of good ideas on this thread!

i have been buying buckets of legumes, wheat, rice from emergency essentials. But i did have to invest in a grinder to grind the wheat, whole wheat for bread making! Buy one that is not electronic, have the kids grind the wheat every morning! You bake the bread every day, get the kids on the learning process of cooking and baking!

Join some forums for free that are about cooking and baking for less money, couponing clubs, SHTF forums, they all come up with money saving ideas and suggestions.

Aldies-a market that sells food for less then your regular grocery store. No club fees.

Gordon Foods-a bulk food store that many churches and organizations, restaurants use for paper goods, frozen foods and most any kind of food you can find. I buy lots of pasta from them in large bags. No club fees.

Costco, a bulk food store, I use their gas, buy food items in bulk when the prices are good, watch their meat prices, hamburger is usually good. Club Fee.

Soups, chili, rice meals, bean meals-learn some recipes and make your food go a long way.

Many times organizations like VFW, hunt clubs, retiree clubs, community organizations, will have Friday night fishfry's with kids eat for free or large discounts, and you can usually get all you can eat for a good price. Not something you can do often but for a night out!

Find a church in your area that is involved in Angel Food services (I think that is the name of it), WONDERFUL discounts on food that is delivered by the month, you pay for it when you order it and pick it up at the church. You can get lots of different deals and packages of month that will last a few weeks.

Make your own cookies, better yet have the kids learn to bake cookies.
No baths, showers, 5 minute timer.
Laundry day, if you have space hang clothes up to dry, don't use the dryer.

Shop at institutions like Good Will, and other charities.
In Ann Arbor there is a charity that has a good will like store, where people drop off their clothes and dry goods, books, etc etc and the profits go to organizations for unwed mothers (to feed them and their babies), also there are second hand shops still in our area, because there is still money here, people are still dropping off tons of stuff to these places.

Our church in Brighton has its own ogranization and store within, but we don't charge for anything, they access people who ask needs, and we give them everything from food to furniture and also we have a group of men who do maintenance on homes and yards for both members and non members.

Home schooling (I did it for one year with my son), does not take up 8 hours a day. Effectively done, you can home school your children with actual classroom instruction, book work and work sheets in less then 4 hours a day. You should be including your children's education the help to you for cooking and cleaning. Since your in such a terrible place living and can't send the kids outside, I would put on the top of the list your husband locating a new job so you can find a community where the three of you can leave the house safely and work.
The children when old enough could walk dogs, rake leaves, shovel snow, even if its only for 3 bucks, they learn fast how to earn money for the sweat off their back, isn't that one of the most important lessons learned?

You could get a part time job also, when dad gets home, he watches the kids and puts them to bed, and you work for 4 hours an afternoon 5 or 6 times a week, you make a bit of money there. And if you work at a place that gives you a discount for something, or leftovers, there is another avenue.

If you leave out in the suburbs or country, you have another avenue
every gardener has lots of produce to share, (many take to their churches and share with each other, putting boxes in the corners with it for people to take), and many have honesty produce tents at the end of their drives, you stop and grab a few tomatoes and put a dollar in the box.
Yes! we still do that, or junior runs the store after school, when everyone is coming home and want a fresh bag of corn and squash for dinner and don't want to deal with stores, so they stop at the neighbors veggie stand. They are all over here (Ann Arbor, Brighton Michigan area).

People are still hiring here in this area, we are having a bevy of restaurants come into existance, all kinds of waiting jobs, if you can handle the work, you could get a job here! Rent can be found for 600-900 a month, my married college daughter and college soninlaw live for about 2000 a month including their food, bills, rent, and they even go to the bar and eat once in awhile. They both ahve crappy jobs, just a bit more then minimum wage, they have three cats and times are tough. He is from Tawaiin so they know how to eat cheap, but they eat pretty healthy! She is still going to college, he graduated but of course NO JOB for him.

You can do this, and my one suggestion is get out of that hellhole for future and present safety. You can find a place to live out in a smaller community with good churches and organizations to help sustain and lift you up.

You could probably save more money out of there then you are living there with his job.

When SHTF and it will........
its the last place you wanna be, cause they will rape you and enslave you, hang your husband, and eat your children.

Thats just what I believe.

Just start doing the extreme couponing thing. Those freaks can stockpile a hell of a lot of random food.

This guy at my work regularly does this and every so often he finds a deal where he actually get money back!

I looked into myself and realized it takes a lot of work to do that stuff and said screw it. I don't have that much time on my hands. Might cut into my doom time.

I know this is hard but try to shift your focus at much as you can. Do not dwell on being broke, that will only draw more of the same to you.

Try to focus on where you want to be, I know that's hard.

Dump your broadband internet
Use your Smart phone Hotspot..even if it costs you $30/mo its probably cheeper than cable/dsl

Dump the TV and go Over the Air

Food banks.

GAS..stop driving BS runs.. Food and work if you work.

If your out of your home find cheeper apartment

If your a handyman offer work to home owners.
Heck we pay HS kids $20/hr for lawn weeds..mulching..help around the house at times.

op you realy need to get back to food basics if you are couponing then you are likely paying for processed expensive product.

living of rice and beans is a saying that says a lot about
getting back to food basics.

for example compare the cost of a box of bisquick with the
same quantity of flour then compare that with wheat.

Step one, leave the city, everything is more expensive there.
Step two, buy goats, they produce milk and meat and are cheaper than cows.
Step three, plant a garden, three kids home schooled they will have time to help.
I'd like to agree with you, but then we would both be wrong.
