Japan's 2011 megaquake reactivated dormant faults

The megaquake that shook the east coast of Japan in March 2011 reactivated dormant faults near Fukushima's beleaguered nuclear reactors, geologists warn.

"A strong quake may occur in the Futaba fault, only 5 to 6 kilometres away," says Dapeng Zhao of Tohoku University. The fault runs parallel to the coast, right past both of Fukushima's nuclear plants.

It reactivated the "Fukushima Fault" which is literally directly under the Fukushima Nuclear Plant.

I haven't checked out the link you provided yet so I'm interested to see exactly how many faults have been "reactivated". Pretty scary stuff isn't it op?

Scientists are urging the operators of the Fukushima nuclear plant to improve safety measures, warning that a dangerous seismic fault has been re-activated near the site.

In the seven months after last year's magnitude 9 earthquake, more than 24,000 aftershocks were recorded in the city of Iwaki, in Fukushima prefecture.

A trio of seismologists from Japan and China are warning that the big quake has jolted an old fault line back into life.

In a study published this week, the scientists are calling for safety measures at the nearby Fukushima nuclear plant to be strengthened so the crippled facility can withstand more violent aftershocks.

The biggest aftershock since last year's quake was a magnitude 7 tremor at a shallow depth right underneath Iwaki.
