I don't know, but i run win7 and similar thing occurs when I delete stuff on usb drive. Doesn't lock but hesitates for a min. or so.

It's odd .. I don't remember this happening before ...

It might be related to file level permissions on the removable drive.

define lock up... no response from any peripherals? Some? How long are you waiting until you reboot?

Check the eventlog for any error messages and google them.

First the drive freezes - then everything ... have to push the power button to shut it off.

Yea sounds like the external drive is bad, hook it up to another machine see if you get same result.

It's a new drive ... and the same thing happened on an older drive I had in it just before that.

You external drive is going into sleep mode and has to wake up each time you use it.
Change the bios settings for your USB device.

It locks up and then you have to reboot???
Define a lockup.

Yes, other than that I can access any file ... it just refuses to delete anything, including deletion with an overwrite program.

For a test...
Make a new directory....put a few things in it.
Now try and delete the files in it.....then try and delete the directory you just made.

What happens?

Windows XP x86 is MBR only, which limits the hard drive size to 2 TB.

MBR disks (hard drives) exceeding 2TB must use GPT, but Windows XP 32 doesn't support GPT.

That's not true really either.
Drive overlay software can be used....just like they did when the 2 GB barrier was broken in hard-drives.

If it has happened to two drives, then it could be the usb ports going bad. Try a different set of usb ports. Example if you are plugging in the front, try the ones on the back.

If the port is failing, then it is not sending the data too and from the drive correctly and can cause unexpected crashes
