Why "Outdoor Dogs" Are Miserable
The real question is Why "people" are idiots?

------------------------

What compels people get a dog only to keep it isolated outside, away from the family? I have often wondered this as I walk my dogs down streets lined with fences behind which lonely outdoor dogs bark as we go by.

I don't know what they look like and can only guess their size by the deepness of their voices. But I know what the lives of these dogs are too often like. They are animals born to be part of a social structure, a pack or a family, yet this is denied them. They spend their lives on the outside, looking in.

The experts say many of these dogs will never really bond with owners who interact with them so little. When the puppy is no longer cute and the children grow tired of the care they promised to provide, when the destructiveness escalates or the neighbors complain about the noise, it's often just easier to dump the dog than solve the problem.

I have always had difficulty understanding why people want to keep dogs outside. If keeping a beautiful house and yard are of the utmost importance to you, then don't get a dog. If you know someone in your family can't abide a dog in the house, for whatever reason, then don't get a dog. If you can't let a dog be part of your family, then don't get a dog.

You don't get the benefits of companionship from a dog you see so little. You don't even get much in the way of protection from the pet who has no access to the house. And don't count on outdoor dogs as an early warning system. These animals often become such indiscriminate barkers that you couldn't tell from their sound whether the dogs are barking at a prowler or at a toddler riding a tricycle down the street. Besides, people who keep outdoor dogs seem to become quite good at ignoring the noise they make, as any angry neighbor can vouch.

Bull Shit. Cause its a dog Stupid. I had dogs OUTSIDE all my life. Happy Dogs. I've seen dumb asses with big dogs in the house and all their shit is nasty, chewed up furniture and floors not to mention the smell. If you don't spend time with you dogs to train them you are just an asshole. Dogs like it outside.

Love is a state of Being. Your love is not outside; it is deep within you. You can never lose it, and it cannot leave you. You can feel the same life deep within every other human and every other creature. You look beyond the veil of form and separation. This is the realization of oneness. This is love. What is God? The Eternal One Life underneath all the forms of life. What is love? To feel the presence of that One Life deep within yourself and within all creatures. To be it. Therefore, all love is the love of God.

Re: Why "Outdoor Dogs" Are Miserable
planet needs more people like you.

hf

ive trained lots of dogs i think about dogs a lot,how they think/feel relate to us,i think about their training a lot..more and more these days you see stuff about dog attacks..badly trained dogs, the need for obedience classes leash laws blah blah...

Growing up i never noticed that dogs were these awful out of control creatures people talk about now...dogs were more part of the family...they were taken on holidays..i never had to worry about leash training because having them off leash they learnt to follow/heel and not bolt off by themselves in glee because theyre hardly allowed out and/or off leash...back then no harsh leash laws or really bad penaalties if your dog was wandering,it meant dogs were out more ,socialised more ,around humans more kids more etc...none of the complaints and"dog attacks" hear about now, due to much more well rounded and hapopy animals.

These days we have tenancy nightmares if you have pets..forcing animals outside...we have a culture of "i want" a huge modern white home that retains its value so not pets inside...we have people to busy to even spend time at home if they were to let their dogs in.

My dog is goofy but has impeccable house manners, because hes allowed to hone them being inside...hes happy, loves being outside but "prefers" to be where i am.

Training dogs ive dealt with an utter mess of behavioural and emotional problems with other peoples dogs that just wouldnt happen if they were around other beings and interacted with and loved more, rather than being confined in a yard spoken to and interacted with for minimal min a day...etc.

do it! I 'napped my neighbor's dog........it was miserable. They kept it in a tiny crate 24/7, fed it cat food.....CHEAP cat food, never bathed it, never walked it. We started bringing it to our house to play, socialize and bathe it... it got to the point where when we would take her back to "her home" she would slip her collar to run back to our house......we nabbed her, and made sure she made it to a safe foster care, where she ultimately found her forever home..........

Dogs like it outside. They like to shit outside and lay in the grass and eat dirt if they want to because they are dogs. I bring my dogs in when I want to, when there are storms or extreme cold. To say Outside dogs are miserable is stupid. My dogs come in but they want right back out.

Re: Why "Outdoor Dogs" Are Miserable
I have 5 dogs and a doggy door where they can go inside or out.
Australian Shepherd
Prefers to stay outside except for when it gets stormy. Then he gets inside pronto

Rat terrier
Lays on the couch 90% of the time.

Papillon
Alpha dog.

black lab
prefers it outside but comes in often to say hello

rottweiler
Still young and rehabbing from hip displasia surgery.
she likes to be with her owner pretty much all the time.

All 5 have their own likes and dislikes and personality. You can never know that if you dont spend time with them.

Gun control is like trying to reduce drunk driving by making it tougher for sober people to own cars.

I'd like to go quietly in my sleep, like grandpa did. Not screaming in terror like the people in the back seat of the car he was driving.

Geesh, some of you talk about dogs as if they are all one homogenous personality type & size. Dogs are bred for specific traits. Therefore, some will like it outside more than inside and visa versa. Plus, our home situations are different. If you live in a postage stamp lot or apartment, you probably don't want a pointer. If you want a dog to help with the farm animals, you probably don't want a pug.

Leaving a dog alone in the house all day is just as bad or worse maybe but it doesn't talk about that. At least outside dogs get to interact with other wildlife, catch a breeze and scents.

If someone does not spend time with their dog, they are assholes. This article says outside dogs are miserable and that is a lie.

Had a dog across the street that did that. Barked more than once a second for hours, and hours on end. I know because I had to count the barks to officially file a noise complaint, although never did.

The owners would put it outside, and it would bark all afternoon long until they let it back in. Fucking insane.

Hours, and hours of nonstop barking. I think they ended up giving it away, or putting it down becase it just stopped altogether one day.

I don't know how his nextdoor neighbors tolerated it. It went on pretty much every day for varying durations for a couple years.

Maybe they choked the thing to death.

I like dogs, the only problem with mine, is he eats feces, cat feces out of the cat box, whatever he can find. Today he found some shit of god knows what outside, and before I could stop him wolfed it down. I was pissed. This it put me in a sour mood all night, of course he doesn't understand why I am so disgusted to him it is perfectly normal to eat fecal excrement. Why do dogs have to be so fucking disgusting sometimes.

Re: Why "Outdoor Dogs" Are Miserable
Our dogs, a highly energetic beagle and a Lab pup, are indoor/outdoor. Given their breeds, they love to be outside. We have a very big, fenced backyard, and they keep each other company during the day. They come in at night to be with the family and eat their meals. They sleep in kennels inside. They are very happy and healthy.

Whether you like it or not, dogs are animals and need the outdoors--more or less, depending on breed. I agree it is cruel to neglect them outdoors, but ours like to go outside a lot, and they enjoy their indoor time, too. Moderation.

I have eight dogs; if I'm inside they're inside and when I go out, they go out. We are fortunate to have a large fenced pasture and backyard. We enjoy each other’s company and we form are our own pack. By-the-way, I’m alpha, …… usually.
