Has NASA confirmed the collision with Asteroid 2012 DA14 at February 15, 2013?
A few days ago- on February 23, 2013 was opened a new asteroid 2012 DA14, which, according to specialists of NASA- on February 15, 2013 will fly at a very short distance from the Earth - only 27,000 kilometers (see the photo of NASA website at the top of this article)...
..27,000 kilometers - is the distance, that may be in the range of errors of astronomical calculations, and this short distance is actually evidence of real probability of a collision...

it stays at it's minimum distance, 6.0e-4au, for two hours, from midnight to 2 am on the 16th of February 2013, then goes to 7.0e-4au from 2 am and slowly pulls away from us again.

it has a condition code of 6

''condition code

Description: MPC "U" parameter: orbit uncertainty estimate 0-9, with 0 being good, and 9 being highly uncertain''

lol

it gets better, eh?

we need to see that condition code coming down, to be certain this thing will miss us.

if it hit land 100 km from you..

[link to impact.ese.ic.ac.uk]

Distance from Impact: 100.00 km ( = 62.10 miles )
Projectile diameter: 100.00 meters ( = 328.00 feet )
Projectile Density: 3000 kg/m3
Impact Velocity: 17.00 km per second ( = 10.60 miles per second )
Impact Angle: 49 degrees
Target Density: 2500 kg/m3
Target Type: Sedimentary Rock

Energy:
Energy before atmospheric entry: 2.27 x 1017 Joules = 5.42 x 101 MegaTons TNT
The average interval between impacts of this size somewhere on Earth during the last 4 billion years is 6.0 x 103years

if hit hit water 1000 km from you..

[link to impact.ese.ic.ac.uk]

Distance from Impact: 1000.00 km ( = 621.00 miles )
Projectile diameter: 100.00 meters ( = 328.00 feet )
Projectile Density: 3000 kg/m3
Impact Velocity: 17.00 km per second ( = 10.60 miles per second )
Impact Angle: 49 degrees
Target Density: 1000 kg/m3
Target Type: Liquid water of depth 5.0 km ( = 3.1 miles ), over crystalline rock.

Tsunami Wave:
What does this mean?

The impact-generated tsunami wave arrives approximately 3.5 hours after impact.

Tsunami wave amplitude is less than 28.9 cm ( = 11.4 inches).

it would seem you'd have to be very unlucky to be killed even by something this big. Or maybe it would be a Tunguska type event?

Tunguska-Sized Asteroid Homing on Earth - Asteroid 2012 DA14

An asteroid of the same class as one that allegedly detonated over Tunguska River in 1908 will pass by Earth next year, flying closer than some man-made satellites, according to NASA.

The asteroid, 2012 DA14, will miss the planet by 26,900 kilometers on February 15, 2013, which is closer than satellites in the geostationary orbit of 35,700 kilometers, according to data on NASA’s website published Sunday.

The asteroid, first detected by the Spanish Observatorio Astronomico de La Sagra, is between 40 and 95 meters in diameter and belongs to Apollo group of near-Earth asteroids, many of which are potential collision hazards.

Curious, I looked at the close approach dates and cross checked earthquakes around those dates.

FYI -- I picked the CLOSEST quake date and then included quakes that bracket that one, to show how close or how far other quakes were:

Still curious, I did this research...

UPCOMING CLOSE APPROACHES TO EARTH with one year

[link to neo.jpl.nasa.gov]

(NEO object) YYYY-MMM-DD -- Nominal LD/AU

(2012 DH54) 2012-Mar-10 -- 3.30/0.0085
(2012 DW60) 2012-Mar-12 -- 2.50/0.0064

(2010 KK37) 2012-May-19 -- 2.30/0.0058
(2012 DA14) 2013-Feb-15 -- 0.07/0.00019

2012 DA14 will be 32 times closer than any other known approaching object with next year!

TOP 6 CLOSEST APPROACHES TO EARTH within last year

(2011 MD ) 2011-Jun-27 -- 0.05/0.00012
(2012 DU32) 2012-Feb-21 -- 0.1/0.0003

(2011 YC40) 2011-Dec-28 -- 0.3/0.0007
(2012 DY13) 2012-Feb-20 -- 0.3/0.0007

Only one out of over 800 (2011 MD) was closer than 2012 DA14 path.

PHA--Potential Hazardous Asteriods with last year:

(2005 YU55) 2011-Nov-08 -- 0.8/0.0022
(2011 JA ) 2011-Apr-25 -- 1.6/0.0042
(2011 LT17) 2011-Jun-15 -- 4.6/0.0119

This object will be 11 times closer than 2005 YU55

TOP 7 Closest of ALL PAST near earth objects:

(2011 CQ1 ) 2011-Feb-04 -- 0.03/0.00008
(2008 TS26) 2008-Oct-09 -- 0.03/0.00008

(2004 YD5 ) 2004-Dec-19 -- 0.09/0.00023

2012 DA14 would RANK #5 of all time?

Conclusion: This object is very significant!

Re: Has NASA confirmed the collision with Asteroid 2012 DA14 at February 15, 2013?
A newer figure from JPL Horizons gives 28,200 km

2013-Feb-15 19:24 2.8253512975E+04 -0.1713908
2013-Feb-15 19:25 2.8246534385E+04 -0.0612189
2013-Feb-15 19:26 2.8246167801E+04 0.0490000
2013-Feb-15 19:27 2.8252413504E+04 0.1591813

EDIT: This solution based on 10 days and 97 observations.

Re: Has NASA confirmed the collision with Asteroid 2012 DA14 at February 15, 2013?
it stays at it's minimum distance, 6.0e-4au, for two hours, from midnight to 2 am on the 16th of February 2013, then goes to 7.0e-4au from 2 am and slowly pulls away from us again.

That app is not as accurate as JPL's Horizons or their NEO page. It has the right date though. Current prediction is about 28,200 km, or .0002 au.

EDIT: The date from the app is the 15th, not 16th. Apparent mistake from the ac, or maybe the app has since been updated.
