I work in a Hospital (Hospital São João, Porto, Portugal - one of the biggest from Portugal) and the doctors and nurses say that the situation is calm and under control. There is no reason for alarm!

No, this is not about winter only... they say this things to calm down people, but this is talked for some time, and people say it's a thing like flue, but it's not flue!

The thing that made Spanish flu so deadly was health and hygiene practices back then. Also it was during WW1 and people weren't as healthy as they normally are.

My brother in law was affected by the Hong Kong SARS outbreak. He is a professor at the hospital that was raided and closed off by WHO - quarantining everyone inside. The eventually let him out because he no longer works with patients.

Swine flu seem to have some promise. But that was the biggest let down in the history of flu's.

Mortality in Portugal increased in the last 3 weeks

Mortality with numbers higher than expected. Flu and extreme cold can be the causes of this increase, but there is no certainty.
Three weeks ago there are more people dying in Portugal than would be expected for this time of year taking into account the average mortality of earlier years.

This excess mortality may be to blame the cold and a flu epidemic, but there is no certainty.

Data from the National Health Institute Dr. Ricardo Jorge (INSA), consulted by the TSF, reveal that from 2008-2009, when there was the last major flu epidemic coupled with intense cold, that there was so much death in the country.

In the last week for which data are available, 13-19 February, the mortality rate rose even more than the previous two weeks when the INSA has said that the weekly mortality figures was "above expectations".

For the third consecutive week the Surveillance System of Daily Mortality repeats the assertion, but this time adds that this mortality is observed especially among those over 65 years.

Flu outbreak hits more than 2.11 million nationwide
The flu epidemic sweeping across Japan has now affected people in all 47 prefectures, but the epidemic may not have peaked yet, the National Institute of Infectious Diseases said Saturday.

The institute said that as of Feb 5, the number of flu patients in Japan topped 2.11 million, an increase of 380,000 over the previous week.

The number of patients visiting hospitals and clinics for flu treatment has now exceeded that during the peak week of the swine flu outbreak in 2009, when 1.89 million patients sought medical help, NHK reported.

Japan suffering from worst flu season in 10 years
Face masks are being seen everywhere in Japan at the peak of flu season, as the number of patients is increasing at the fastest pace in 10 years.

The number of patients who sought treatment at medical institutions subject to a survey stood at 42.62 on average in the latest week from Jan. 30 to Feb. 5. That was the highest at this time of the year since 2002.

The total number of flu patients in Japan is estimated to be about 2.11 million.

Starting this month, the number of patients who have contracted different types of flu strains is also increasing.

This influenza season features the spread of a Type A Hong Kong flu for the first time in five seasons. About 90 percent of patients were contracting that type of virus until January. From this month, however, patients that are suffering from a Type B influenza are also increasing in some areas.

This really does sound serious and an earlier poster from France seems to say that it's happening there as well.. and the poster from England with a daughter who was sicker than he'd ever seen... this really does not sound good at all!

I'll be happily surprised and shocked if we make it through 2015 without seeing another 1918 style global epidemic
